Unfortunately, this bottle did not follow the upside surprise theme of the night. Fairly monotonous - a single thread, pepper laced Syrah. Nowhere near past bottles. No flaws but just boring. (88)

Wow. A superb St Joseph. Great nose of red plum fruit, pepper and oak spice. Pure Syrah with a touch of Guigal seasoning. In this case, perfectly ok as there is more than enough wine to carry the oak. Drinking beautifully, there is substantial heft yet lot of grace as well. Delicious. (95)

There's a kind of a smoked meat, bacon note at first. As the wine takes on some oxygen it shows all of its pure fruit aromas and flavours. You get some crisp berry and cherry things along with ripe and juicy blood plums. I like the wines proportion and detail and the light floral thread that weaves through it.

Pepper, crushed minerals, rocks; really nice complex notes of blackberry, bit more coarse than the CdP, but great acidity, sticky tannins, nice finish. In a word, an awesome St. Joseph.
