Good bottle (think from Simon Beatty’s cellar). Needs 20mins to settle, when great nose of liquorice, Chinese plums and cinnamon. In the mouth though it’s a bit woody and hollow - nowhere near the fruit density or complexity of 89 Pegau or Beaucastel, and lots of astringency as it also finishes hot (needs serving cool, but also airing). It’s not aged well and needs drinking up. Nice minty finish though. Not a fan of more modern Janasse… or older vintages it seems. Luckily paired with rich Spanish food which absorbed some of the short-comings. 91pts… 92pts with food, drink up

Simon Beatty Memorial Dinner - Chablis Le Clos (Noizé): Again, a savoury treat, and the type of wine that I don't drink anymore, and they don't make anymore. Certainly on the downslope and falls away a little quickly, but a treat to drink and share.

Simon Beatty Memorial Dinner - Les Clos table (Noize): Simon's bottle. Certainly towards the end of its plateau of maturity, but I just love that leathery, plummy old Southern Rhone thang. Palates were certainly getting fatigued, so the fact we finished the bottle tells its own story.

Simon Beatty Memorial Dinner, Clos St Jacques table (Noizé, London): Dense, quite meaty and with dried fruits on the nose, more acidity on the palate which gave it more freshness than i was expecting, not a style I’ve drunk too much before so a treat to try a well stored bottle tonight

Ruby red color, bouquet of lead pencil, crushed violet flowers, earthen cherry. Good fruit, modest acidity, firm and well balanced tannins.the wine opened and evolved beautifully over the 90 minutes it was opened. It definitely had peaked but was a pleasant surprise. A lovely pairing with a deconstructed pastichio and super high quality lamb shoulder.

A more mature medium ruby color with a ton of particulate debris. Cherries, herbs (thyme and sage). Back raspberries, leather and violets. The palate was medium full bodied with good balacne. I think maybe too shook up to show as well as it could? I liked it a lot. 92 pts. My 8th place. Group's 9th place.

Wineflock - 'Reserve' Chateauneuf du Papes (Bob and Ann's): Group #9, My #4 - Cloudy crimson garnet color. Lovely sweet red cherry - medium almost burg-like nose. Dripping red fruit, seeming focus on grenache. Sweet, round, really nice mature CdP.

The "Not Lori" Smith and Wollensky Dinner (Chicago, IL): Agred brown and thin in appearance. A somewhat maderized nose of balsamic and earth. Palate is thin and maderized. Could have been flawed, but this bottle was definitely disappointing. Merits some points for picking up weight and interesting caramel notes after time in the glass.

France Trip Part 1 - Châteauneuf-du-Pape; 6/16/2006-6/17/2006: Same bottle as Vinsanity. We opened this during a long outdoor dinner at our B&B, the Chateau Talaud, in Loriol-du-Comtat. This was a fabulous wine, with still-youthful black fruit and wonderful tobacco/leather secondary characteristics that have blossomed with bottle age. Great balance and structure; long finish.

A generous gift from the winemaker, Christophe Sabon, after I mentioned that I had once had a corked bottle of the '89 VV (I wasn't trying to score a replacement bottle, I promise). Terrific. Old-school, with dark fruit, gutsy, game components, and an underlying mineral framework. I love this style of Chateauneuf. A very traditional Chateauneuf that seems like it could go another 10-15+ years without a problem, as it's in what I would consider its middle age right now and has such balance and structure that I'd assume it will continue to age gradually and gracefully for a long time... Excellent.

Deep, complex nose. The palate and the finish are not totally on par with the nose. The tannins are integrated and the acidity keeps this wine alive. A classic CdP, very good but I was expecting maybe a bit more.

An intense dark ruby robe with only a slight amber on the edge. There is little sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Red and blackberries, some moka on the nose. The wine has a big depth in mouth, is very powerful, much more than the Celestin, and what’s crazy, is the length, just UNBELIEVABLE, aromas stay in for over a minute, an also it is so balanced that it is devilish ! This is clearly an outstanding bottle. Probably a 97. The next day, this wine is still young, vibrant, with an impressive length and complex aromas. Leather and wet earth a more present now. A beauty.

Simon Beatty’s memorial dinner, CSJ table (Noizé, London): Mid ruby. More density. Warm leather. Again, breadth rather than depth, but nicely done. Some length on the finish. ****

Simon Beatty's Memorial Dinner - Table 2 - Richebourg (Noizé, London): A tale of two halves here: - the nose has real interest with some hung venison, cloves, polish and fruit cake. The palate? Not so much; a little sour and short.
