  • Dark, brooding with plum fruit, olive, hint of rubber and asphalt.
In the vein of Aglianico but an honest wine that overdelivered and should age well for another 5-10 years.

  • Similar to my last note, except that the tartness on the finish has dissipated. Still a little tannic, but less fruity and more integrated. Enjoying this on its own. 89+ pts. Aloha!

  • Tannic, smoky, needs food. Vinturi'd, but better with even more air. Grippy and acidic, I'd say drink now or soon, and definitely with something fatty to eat, like a soft cheese or charcuterie.

  • Similar impression to my last note, but it struck me as medium- to full-bodied. This has nice black fruit but also rusticity from earth and a good dose of tannin. Plenty of sediment, I'd recommend a decant.

  • 13.5% ABV. I opened this bottle three days prior, tasting it along the way and storing it in my cellar. My note is from the third day, but it was little changed from the first. Mostly opaque dark garnet in the glass. Tannic smelling with background dark fruit. Medium-full bodied and a bit hard with some modest black fruit overshadowed by tannin like walls around around the fruit. Secondary nuances of mineral, earth, and perhaps a little tea. The tannins aren't rough and gritty, but they do make it difficult to enjoy. This kind of leaves me scratching my head. I think there is potential here, but I don't think I will touch another one for four to five years. Update: retasting this wine on day four, my earlier thoughts were a little too harsh. Either my palate was off prior or the wine turned a corner, as it does seem improved today, with some blackberry fruit on the nose and some of the same fruit on the palate, with an overall more approachable flavor. The palate is quite a bit more lithe than the nose suggests.

  • Dark purple, almost black. Dark plummy fruit on the nose, bit of iron and earth. Medium bodied, not as fruity or concentrated on the palate as I expected. Nice minerality, earth and tannin to balance the blackberry fruit. Definitely not an Argentinean malbec. Very nice.

  • PnP through Nuance Wine Finer. Deep, dark purple color. Aromatic, fruity nose. Having trouble discerning the fruit - tastes to me as if a mix of plums and raspberries. A little spice, mild tannins, no oak, a little earthiness. Fairly well balanced, but a little sourness on the back end. Enjoyable wine. 88+pts. Aloha!

  • the second bottle seemed even more like the first bottle than the first bottle, and as long as we are posting multiple scores on the same wine here I may as well pipe up for the meh side on this one.

  • Relatively dark in color, but medium bodied and even "elegant". Bright rapsberry fruit, with hints of herbs and earth. Good definition, nice length, super bargain.

  • Fantastic bargain. This paradoxically shows the restraint of an old world wine, with the exuberance of a new world wine. Fragrant and floral, with strong mineral/slatey notes. Nice length and intensity. Although a medium to light bodied wine, this is full of flavor.

  • Alarmingly dark but showed some restraint and minerality. I didn't love it, but it did gradually grow on me a bit. Will have to revisit.

  • Dark red in color, but quite light on it's feet. Crushed violets and other floral notes, along with crisp, crunchy red fruits. Hints of slate/shale. Wonderfuly minerality and lift. The exact opposite of a new world rendition of Malbec. This has elegance and poise, but not the power that some might prefer. This could be a poster child for the type of wines Garagiste recommends. I, for one, enjoyed it.

  • I'm far from an expert, but Malbec is one of the few grapes I think is better in the new world style. This Cahors is disjointed. It is dark but thin in the mid-palate and cheap tasting in the finish. Leave it open for at least a day.

I'm going to add that I'm no hater of old world wines and styles and that I'm judging this for what it is, not what I think it ought to be.
