I don't normally post notes on wines I buy for everyday drinking but this one rocks! Hearty raspberry aromas on opening, palate of dark berries, fig, leather. Medium-to-full body longish 8 sec finish, perfectly integrated velvety tannins.
What made this great was around 3 hours in, the wine opened up and the flavors became more intense with the tannins melting into a smooth and even longer finish. Fantastic!
If drinking now, I'd say let sit for 2 hours for peak drinking. I had some left over for next day and the flavors subsided but still quite good. Drink now or keep for another 3-4 years at peak drinking window.
First of 5 bottles. The nose is tight and rich, but suggests that decanting could have made it explode a bit more. Barnyard aromas and cedar mostly come through. On the palate, the wine confirms being rich in taste and texture, but all in a very smooth style. Tannins feel perfectly tamed! I would decant this for an hour just to get the nose going a bit more, but don’t see this necessarily getting much better with age. Great value @22$.
The wine had an initial smell of wet cardboard, and I was concerned that it was corked. After tasting, it seemed fine but the cardboard smell persisted on the first sniff of each glass. It seemed to blow off after that. Weird.
The wine had very nice sweet raspberry and blueberry fruit characteristics and the mouthfeel was fantastic. Silky, integrated tannins on the mid palate. The finish had lovely butterscotch, mocha and cedar. Long, dry finish with lively acidic tartness.
Decanted as there was a lot of sediment. The wine peaked at about 1.5 hours in the decanter and started to decline over the next hour or so.
At its peak I would rate this wine about a 92 but probably declined to about an 89 or 90. My wife felt like it was about an 88-89 partly due to the funky nose.
This has improved quite a bit since my last bottle about a year ago. Now the dark fruits, licorice, leather and tannins are well integrated. The mouthfeel is luscious, and the finish is long. What's not to like? Glad I have a few more!
Dark fruit with a touch of rubber on the nose. Well resolved tannin gives way to lots of sour cherry and a really nice mouthfeel, though the finish could use some more length. Overall, very nice wine, and perhaps would fare better with some air time (this was a pop and pour).
Decanted for 2 hours. This is showing well, nice balance and fruit purity. Superb nose on spices with a bit of sour cherry and some oak. The palate is silky smooth, well coated tannins and acidity and crunchy black fruits. Quite long and savory. For about 20$ this is a hell of QPR!
Wine has improved and finish is now quite balanced. Full bodied, dark fruits , licorice an dark chocolate. Almost jammy, but not quite there yet as the acidity keeps it fresh. Friends liked it very much with the steak dinner.
SUPER RQP!
Popped off the truck and drank one glass. Let it sit, and finished on day three. It lost nothing in the interim. This should probably sit a few years...A bit rustic. Lots of bramble and underbrush, deep, black fruit. Not really sensing the 10% merlot. I was at 87 points until the last glass, when it came together a bit. 88 points, and I can see this improving if I leave it alone. Decant 2-3 hours if drinking in the next year or two.
Very dark wine. Nose is subdued, but was able to coax some dark fruit aromas out. The palate is very astringent, with medium acidity and huge unresolved tannins. This wine is not in balance right now and more than likely in a dumb phase. I would wait a while before opening the next one.
Crimson-black; black cherries, plums, cigar, tar, vanilla; ripe berry/plummy, smokey, lush, medium-full body, good acidity, ripe integrated tannins, good finish. Lush, ripe fruit, smoke, tobacco and barnyard developing as it breathed. Noticeable but integrated 14.5% alcohol. More complexity and finish would make this superlative! Drink this gem now.
What a stellar find. Perfectly in drinking window but benefits from a quick decant. Lots of sediment. Some nice old world Ribera that is excellent QPR. Haven't been this enamoured with a sub $30 bottle in a long, long time. Perfect friends with NY strip. Get more. 91-92
This wine should be decanted briefly. Hints of vanilla, dark fruits and lilac on the nose. Well integrated vanilla, ample plummy fruit, soft tannins, pronounced minerals, and...with time...hints of tar combine beautifully in this old world style offering. The finish includes all of the above with minerals and tar aplenty. An outstanding effort for the price.
I was hoping this wine would improve with age, that the tannins would soften and the fruit blossom. but it didn't happen. Tannins did soften but fruit is minimal and kind of bitter. Time has not helped this wine since Miller's review in 2008. WL keeps trying to push this wine, but for me it is a definite pass.
Deep, opaque coloring turning ruby at the edges. Nose of soil and damp leaves, cedar, mineral, and light herbs and floral notes. Maybe a little freshly dug up root vegetables. Great nose. Medium bodied with dark red and black fruits and mineral, pretty good acidity, and medium+ finish. Nicely balanced wine. Pretty fine grained tannins that blend-in pretty well in an hour or so. Drinking well now w/ decant. Pair with grilled meats and veggies.
Decanted and put back in bottle for 1 hour. Superb nose on chocolate, some spices and a bit of sour cherry. The palate is silky smooth, nice fruit density and acidity. Quite long and savoury. For a wine that cost me approx. 20$US, this is quite a bargain, hard o beat!!!
Popped and vinturied. Nose was reserved at first, but opened up to show the dark fruit, leather, and chocolate aromas that I typically get from Ribera and Toro tempranillos. Notes of blackberry and vanilla/oak on the med-full bodied palate. Tasty and easy to drink, but kind of simple. There are some chalky, tongue-drying tannins and the finish is just ok. Not seeing the the Miller drinking window at all...I don't see this getting better. Good, but I feel like one can get the same quality for about $10 cheaper...especially Spanish tempranillo.
EXCELLENT RQP!!!
Bought it two years ago and just opened my first bottle. Surprisingly good. Medium to full body. Very smooth with dark fruits and dark chocolate notes. Very silky mid palate. Need to decant for an hour or more and the fruit is more pronounced. Finishes off with drying tannins which did hold me back from giving it a higher score. With food, the finish is fine and dry tannins not as noticeable. I do like aged Ribera's and drank this to see if I would be interested in WL's offer this week 12/20/2012. I ordered another 6 pack from WL. The wine can still age a few more years and if the dry tannic finish subsides, it is even a better deal.
very dark color, nose of leather, coffee. opened for only 30 minutes, seems a bit tight, but got better as time went on. great finish. really enjoyed it. will keep my second bottle for at least 3-4 more years.
A nice wine with a lot of structure but was lacking fruit for me. I personally don't love much fruit because it's usually replaced with tobacco or leather, but the wine was missing this element. Probably a really nice food wine.
Surprisingly rich & complex for a cheap bottle of vino. Tannins and reasonably mild tempranillo finish suggest more age worthiness than the price point suggests. Fruit is dark but sweet syrupy like all the cloyingly sweet pancake syrups at ihop. Overall enjoyed and will buy again.
P&P - very dark, nose was a bit sour with no sugar. Second glass an hour was much better. Interesting wine, begs for food. Will hold the next bottle for 2+ years. Note: had third glass the next evening and the wine had really opened nicely. Raising score from 88 to 90. Enjoyed with a great ribeye steak.
