The wine has a clear, deep ruby color and a pronounced nose of baked cherry pie, ginger, eucalyptus, and cedar. The palate is dry with medium acidity, tannins, and body with flavors of black plum, black cherry, and cedar. The finish is long and this is a good value at $18.

Not impressed to even give it a high 80's score. This wine CANNOT stand on its own, not even for the QPR. Horribly disappointed. Screw cap wine that was immediately poured into a four ounce snifter. Mellow on the nose, but dark fruits were coming through. On the palate was a lot of acid, no structure, no tannin, darker fruits were SORTA KINDA there, but not really. Wine finished with a funky aftertaste that was very metallic, harsh, and unpleasant. I almost considered this wine to have turned/oxidized, but 20 minutes of sitting in the bottle was actually good for the wine - got the rating into the 80's at least. Horribly disappointed overall. I've had many good primitivos in my lifetime; this isn't one of them.
At first glance this was not a profound nor drinkable wine, but after some air I thought it was very enjoyable. Fruit forward, medium/full bodied wine, and dark berry fruit. Great value wine.

I am with toupro on this one. This wine is massive an dpeppery, and not in a good way. Tastes of very high alcohol, as well. Absolutely NEEDS a seasoned steak in order to enjoy it.

Dark garnet/purple color. Nose: blackberry reduction, fruitcake, black olive, mocha, and a hint of funky damp leather. Full body on the palate: loads of blackberry reduction, plum pie, and baking chocolate with accents of black olive, leather, and espresso. Nicely focused acidity carrying the bold flavors. Moderate leathery tannins. Lingering berry skin, dark chocolate, and espresso on the long dry finish. Lacks some complexity and subtlety. Makes up for it with a bold yet well balanced approach. A delicious crowd-pleaser. Drink now with a char-grilled steak or on its own.

A bit overdone but nicely balanced. Not profound or complex but plesant if you like it big. Agree with comment "good week drinker." Holds up ok on second day. I gave it an extra point for the QPR.

Normally I like big, jammy wines (like Ridge) but this was way over the top. Way too thick/heavy on the palate, it overwhelms the taste buds. Not enjoyable at all.
GG hit the nail on the head. Really enjoy these the past few times I've had them. Love the spice notes and the silky mouthfeel. Still young and may improve in the near future. Another one to add to your everyday sipping list. Well done. 89-90

Taste of the Town VII (Olympia Grill at Pier 21, Galveston, TX): Classic shiraz nose. Blueberry, blackberry, ripe plum, anise, cracked pepper, hint of spice. On the palate, blueberry, black plum, mocha, anise, pepper, vanilla. Finishes with nice balance and no noticeable heat very well done for the price. Drink over the next few years.

Unbelievably intense for a $12 wine. Very jammy fruit on the nose which continues through the palette and finish. Could easily pass for a $100 Aussie Shiraz.

Big, full bodied red. Tasted it blind and concluded it was like a drier version of Yellow Tail Shiraz--more dark chocolate, less vanilla and Coca Cola. Awfully rich to drink with food because of the over-the-top spicy, chocolatey flavors. True to the label this is kinda like having a piece of cake after dinner.

Deep, brooding purple. High toned aromas of ripe dark fruit, chocolate, and spices. Full bodied, layered, and mouth-coating flavors of black currants, cherries, tar, coffee, and a smooth finish that continues the dark fruit motif. Reminded me of Matetic Corralillo Syrah.

Wine Tasting Notes Dark, dense and creamy, complex aromas of black plum, bing cherry, blackberry and pepper merge with licorice, tobacco, mocha and dark chocolate. This is one inky Shiraz; an explosion of dark super ripe wild blackberry, touch of cigar box finishing with a melange of exotic spices. A pure fruit bomb...complete from attack through a long, lingering finish. Chefs will save this cake for themselves...

Janelle: needs to aerate. Spicy, not a whole lot going on. Got better as it aired out. John: should be decanted or kept in bottle for another year or so. Got better as it sat. A little hot. I didn't think I would buy it again initially, but am kind of interested to see how the 09 would be late in 2011.

Deep, inky purple color with a red brick rim. Gives off prominent aromas of mint, eucalyptus leaves, baked plums and cherries. At 14.9 percent, there's a fair amount of alcohol coming through on the nose, which covers some of the other aromas. In the mouth, heavy dark fruits, blackberries, plums, and chocolate overlay a jammy, slightly confected, body. Smooth tannins, moderate acidity, and a good kick of glycerin. Too rich for my palate. Not enough subtlety and nuance on the palate, but a fair expression of the big, bold flavors of Aussie syrah. Needs food.

color: deep purple; nose: oaky walk through the forest and a little cherry; taste: medium-full fruit jam mouth feel, mid-palate is slightly tangy (meh...), medium-long spicy chocolate rounded gum-sucking finish (yum!); overall: simple but tasty fruit bomb from start to finish, reminds me of higher-priced Boarding Pass, Shotfire, or (way overpriced) Mollydooker -- on sale for $13, Layer Cake is worth buying lots more of
11/26/11 - another bottle: nose - vanilla and cherry are more evident than oak, this time; taste - medium-heavy mouth feel, velvety smooth taste of cherries, vanilla, and semisweet chocolate, medium-length black pepper finish; overall - predictably smooth and enjoyable Aussie Fruit Bomb, would pair well with grilled burgers or steak, good QPR ($13) and worth stocking up at that price.

Nice deep purple color. At first sniff, I thought maybe the Layer Cake was going to be too fruit-forward for my liking. First sip was tannic, and hot. After a few hours of soaking up the Oh Two (oxygen) in my kitchen, however, and this wine was raring to go. Blackberry, cloves, maybe pumpernickel bread. Long finish that wrapped up pleasantly warm. I let this sit on the bar for a few days (it's a screw cap - shoot me) and went back to it, and the wine was much smoother, showing a lot more of the fruit characteristic that tricks you on the nose. Savory Score: 4/5.

Solid fuity wine here - ?QPR as this tastes "cheaper" than it is. The nose has an artificial quality with some strawberry bubble gum and a layer of dark cherry cough syrup perhaps. The palate is dark blackberry/cherry notes with a syrup like quality and a smooth'ish finish. Not sweet, but i can sense a higher level than usual. Just to "man made" if you know what i mean. It is young, and maybe another year to mellow a little would be good.
