Dark purple color. Decanted over 3 hours, tasting at hourly intervals. Nose took a little time to open up, but when it did reveal itself, it was fantastic. Ripe dark fruit, violet, smoke, and chocolate. Dense and concentrated, with a silkiness on the palate. Firm, structured tannins. Long and persistent finish. Given the current prices of the 2009 vintage, this Pape Clement may turn out to be a relative bargain. This is a wine to follow, as it should become a force in the upcoming decade.
Thrilling rich explosive nose of Asian spice , espresso, cocoa and violets. Highly perfumed. Dark rich ripe fruit, oak evident but built to last. Fantastic and excellent value. Deeper and softer after a 2 hr decant but also good on first pop.
Classy and elegant with a gorgeous nose which will make the Bordeaux lover swoon. The 2009 Pape Clement opens up with a balanced and utterly gorgeous nose of ripe, dark red fruits, dusty floral tones, minerals and undergrowth. On the palate, it’s youthful, with decades of development in store, yet still shows elegance with a delightful display of dark red fruits, plum, espresso and earth tones. It clenches the palate on the finish, showing off its formidable structure, yet this is a joy to drink.
The wine looks inky colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like black currant (cassis), cherry and cherry. It tastes like blackberry. The body is full. The wine has polished texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity. Excellent!!!
Had a taste via pop and pour, then put in the decanter for about 90 minutes and followed for a couple hours. This bottle was unfortunately corked. Not terribly so, as you could still get some of the aroma and tastes that you'd expect, but it was off. Aroma is some darker fruit, along with cedar. Taste is definitely dark fruits of blackberry and plum. After a couple hours in the decanter, it actually seemed to show the mildew from being corked even more.
Continuing to flesh out, the oak has faded quite a bit from bottling. Deep in color, with a smoke filled, silky, soft, polished, sensuous personality, the fruit is ripe, dense, pure, clean and opulent. The wine feels great on your palate. I look forward to seeing how this develops.
Still a bit early, but was expecting a bit more from all reviews and comments (professional and community). Good depth, but lacking in elegance and balance. Heavy oak influence and ripeness. Hopefully will integrate more with time.
We poured the wine into a decanter and served the first glass after about ten minutes. It was dark ruby in colour and offered red fruit, black currant, cherry cola, graphite, barnyard notes, raw meat, cigar box, saddle leather and tobacco leaf on the nose. On the palate the wine showed cherry, black currant, blackberry, plum, cedar wood, leather, tobacco, spices, vanilla, liquorice, smoke, hints of coffee, cocoa and milk chocolate, as well as mineral notes and a boatload of graphite, paired with medium to medium-plus acidity, medium-plus ripe, fine, smooth tannin and incredible length. The rich, medium- to full-bodied wine had a very good, creamy mouthfeel and was very balanced. A very complex, very elegant Bordeaux that made me forget the time. A truly fine wine and the best Pape Clément I had to date!
Best pape clement ever. Fantastic ripe juicy and exciting straight from the first pour, no decanting. So glad I have a case... If you don't then hurry up, amazing and delicious right now and in 10 yrs.
Lead pencil, Graves mineral, perfumed fruits on the nose. On the palate, has power, with tannic material in reserve. Perfectly ripe fruits, shows the character of the vintage well. A complete wine. Quite a bit of similarity between this as the Domaine de Chevalier, with slight edge to the Pape Clement because of the superlative fruit. 94-95
The famous property continues to dial back their wine making, Where some recent vintages could be described as a bit much, this is a strong, balanced effort. With smoke, licorice, coffee bean, blackberry and chocolate aromas, Rich, dense and packed with layers of juicy, ripe fruit, this sexy wine produced from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc ends with a long, deep, lush, finish.
Union des Grands Grus 2009 Bordeaux Tasting. Typical funk/oak nose from Pessac-Leognan. Unbelievable pallet with tart fruit that integrated perfectly with nice sweet cassis notes. Excellent concentration, full bodied with perfect balance. This had unbelievable complexities and beautiful round tannins. 98 points.
UGC Bordeaux (Sheraton Hotel - Chicago IL): Aromas of ripe blackberry, plum with blueberry hints. Lush textures, incredibly balanced, very long and powerful with some dark chocolate and spice on finish. My favorite wine at the Chicago UGC tasting.
UGC 2009 Bordeaux Tasting - NYC - 1.25.12 (New York City): Decidedly more modern than all of the wines tried prior. The creaminess on the palate smacks of vanilla toast oak rather than fruit and to me this is something I tend to avoid as it impairs the transformative gift that Bordeaux wines provide with patience and a cold cellar. To me, this wine shows like a California Cabernet that is aimed to please a buyer in its relative youth. Again, there is wonderful fruit and depth to it, but this is a stylistic choice Pape Clement made, effectively turning its back on what I loved about the Chateau from decades prior. (NR)
Lovely definition here. Spicy red fruits and complex notes of minerals. Very lifted; quite tannic on the palate. Lots of extract, mouth-coating texture. Very impressive. Polished tannins. This could be excellent in time. 93-96.
En Primeur Bordeaux 2009 Tasting (Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): Tasted en primeur after 4 months in the barrel. Beautiful ruby colour. Pure nose. Palate shows fresh, pure structure with red fruits and predominant strawberries....great structure and balance of acidity and tannin. Some class. "Very good indeed". Definitely one to buy.
50% CS, 2% CF, 3% PV, 45% Merlot I was pleasantly surprised to find the expression of terrior. Surprisingly elegant and fresh, crushed blueberry, blueberry jam, copious amount of mineral, beautiful silky palate, excellent concentration and perfect harmony. Extremely long finish. 97-99 pts.
