Nose of toasted almonds. Palate delivers toast point, nuts, yeast, and stone fruits over a very light mousse. Prickly texture on the finish with light lemon meringue. stones, and lime peel. Very good wine - my notes aren't very detailed on this one.

This is in a lovely spot...there's a richness on the nose with scents of fresh baguette, butterscotch, and weirdly cuties or tangerine. The palate is rich and expansive with notes of custard, kumquat, candied ginger, & baked apple. This is making me realize that I need to be buying these to stash away for some time. Outstanding!!

My 5th or 6th bottle of this, and it is still singing. The bottle last night was fresher than some 02s, with lots of zippy lime and ginger. Lovely depth, dry without austerity, at point. As it warmed, it showed a little bruised apple and the fizz didn't last too long in the stem, so this seems like one for drinking now/soon despite how reductive and fresh this bottle showed out of the gate.

Golden color, wonderful on the nose and still fresh. Brioche and pear and some yellow plum. Perhaps hazelnut? Amazing after 20 years. To me, in a perfect spot right now.

(Disgorged in spring of 2012, 100% Chardonnay from Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize and Oger, dosage 9 gr/L) Lovely yellow colour with extremely fine bubbles slowly rising to the surface releasing an explosion on the nose showing freshly baked bread, candied lemon and minerals and opens up with butter and lovely hazelnuts on the delicious nose. Smoothing an intense citrus acidity combined with a touch of fresh grass on the mid and finishing off with smooth oakiness, candied lemons and a nice zest bitterness and leaving a saltiness on the lips in a very pleasant way. This is still very fresh and should get with a very pleasant intensity and should keep well for many years to come.. (Best 2017-2032)

(Blind tasting) Medium-fullish nose. Minerally and balanced. Oyster shell and yellow apple. Nutty and citrus-fresh. Quite elegant and deep. Lovely palate. Fullish and austere. Very good concentration. Toasty. Orange peel and coffe. Almost tropical fruit. Tertiary spice hints. Long finish. Stood its ground vs Krug and 2002 Cristal, this wine has certainly benefitted from cellaring. Much, much better than in its youth.

Lemon gold. Brief mousse but frivolous beads of microscopic bubbles. Nose is light, lifted, lemony. Palate is very adolescent Epsom salts exploding in your mouth the crushed oyster shells, ozone, white chalk, salty finish. Very good and a great bottle.

Lovely aged, vintage champagne. Pale, mid-gold colour, lots of fine and persistent bubbles. A great bouquet of mineral, yeast/ bread, and fruit (yellow fruits — pear, apple — and candied citrus — lime). Unexpected depth and energy on the palette for close to 20 years of age; yellow fruits, saline, excellent roundness, balance and steely structure followed by a long, elegant finish — outstanding wine. Drink now, but I would say could go for another decade. Paired perfectly with charcoal grilled seafood pasta.

Lemon, minerals, vanilla, sea breeze and savoury biscuit on the nose all very nicely integrated - quite complex. Very textured with tension and nerve.
A lovely mousse with good mouth weight and a pleasant spike. Very persistent So much better than the regular cuvee and the Whinny (which has fallen apart in my view).
Drinking beautifully - fully mature not going to get better - drink now!

Chú Xī (除夕) Dinner at Home for Chinese New Year (Our House, Hong Kong): Served as a brief aperitif then held back for after dinner. Drank in white wine glasses over 2 hours. Very light yellow/silver gold colour. Has the vitality of mousse and bubbles to accommodate the larger glass. Despite being a 20 year-old Blanc de Blancs, this still shows impressive youth of oyster shell, ozone, crisp acidity, citrus lemon and lots of zestiness on both the nose and the palate. The one indication of maturing is the the typical Pol Roger ‘Epsom Salts’ primary signature is slowly giving away to a more lightly toasted brown bread character. This has at least 10’years ahead of it in this stellar vintage. Pleased to have a case and a half still in my cellar. It is weird to me that this is no more expensive than the Ruinart Blanc de Blancs NV we drank earlier in the day. Love it!

(Disgorged in 2012, 100% Chardonnay from Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize and Oger, dosage 9 gr/l) Still a youthful yellow colour with a greenish shimmering that lead way for the lovely maturing nose showing hazelnuts, butter and yellow apples. Fresh citrus acidity at first and then showing rounder notes on the mid before the lovely lime zest bitterness and butter note takes over on the lengthy finish. Wow, what an excellent showing tonight, and still showing so much youthfulness, will this stay fresh forever? (Best 2022-2042)
I enjoyed this Pol Roger last night. It’s in a great spot, probably at peak. I got the first nuances of 'aged' bubbly, to go with great freshness and body. The dosage might be a bit more evident than prior bottles, perhaps that is the norm for mature champagne? At any rate, I liked it a lot and look forward to trying part 2 of it tomorrow... ok, this is even better today, the fruit and dosage are better integrated. Bright, deep, balanced, bubbly you serve to traditionalists. 92-93 pts.

Wanted a BdB to go with blinis, creme fraiche and caviar and this was a great match. Consistent with past bottles. Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Medium yellow. Toasted bread, almond, baked apple nose in just the right proportions for a pleasant complexity without excessive oxidative nature, at least for my palate. Medium body, good balance, flavors follow the nose, medium finish. Drinking well now and should continue to do so for the next few years at least. Excellent.

Fine bottle of champagne. Decent mousse, plenty of “life”. Light roasted bread, well balanced without being soft-dough ryebread, some apple notes - a good bottle, aged since release in winefridge. Not heavy or jammy in any way.

Very fresh and very young, at 15 years of age this gives the impression of just entering the drinking zone so I am glad I waited a while to try it. Give it 20-30 minutes of air. Nice yellow fruit with just hints of secondary roundness and the nutty & brioche tinge that comes with age, great focus and no lack of underlying power and intensity. This is one that's built for the cellar and I am looking forward to seeing where it will be in a decade from now -I predict good things to come.

Simply lovely. So very different than the Brut. Too much acid to start. But just 30 minutes brought it out. Nose of Asian Pear becoming apple pie. On the palate, citrusy and almond pastry with powered sugar. Long toffee finish.

Served a bit too cool to start with - some buttery fruit and, as it warmed up a bit of toast. This is nice, but I can't help feeling an 02 Pol BdB should have a bit more personality.

Comprehensive 2000 St Emilion Blind Tasting (The Grill Room at the Rosewood DC): Medium expressive deeply toned nose displaying apple, tarte tatin, ginger and brioche. Very good concentration, rich and sweet, good acidity and mineral presence and a long sweet finish. Not the most refined but totally solid Champagne that is drinking beautifully. It has reached the peak but no need to hurry.

Terrific nose with toast, nutritional yeast, dry extract, lime zest, a touch oxidative, a hint of varnish. Even better on the palate with a great, mouthpuckering attack of acids and fruit, quite dry with electric levels of dry extract and a long finish. Love the richness married to a bone dry bitterness. This is fully in the zone. 93-94 pts.

Same btl as R&Rler. There is a ton of solid but semi indistinguishable champagnes out there and then there around a dozen or so btls that are head turners. This was a head turner and kicked off our night in good stead. I think I may have had this wine in London in 2013 but not sure as I don't seem to have a note from then. Either way I loved it! The concentration, intensity, mouthfeel and the rangy depth of citrusy flavors was exciting. Thank you Leo! This rocked!

Christmas Lunch (Our House, Hong Kong): Bright and alive medium straw gold colour. Lively but fast-dissipating mousse but which leaves very persistent streams of the tiniest pinprick bubbles. Nose is lovely fresh-toasted wholemeal bread, some vanilla pod and just the slightest sweetness of a light brioche. Palate is reallly fresh and salivating on entry but almost immediately rich and very toasted in different dimensions. Lots of freshness to keep the saliva buds going and to counterpoint the toasty weight - great harmony and balance. Long aftertaste and reverberance inside the head. As I have noticed before, it leaves a long lasting aftertaste of Hovis bread. One of my most favourite 2002s and probably the best in terms of QPR. There is a decade ahead of this to improve further.

02 (Disgorged in spring of 2012) Intense nose showing an explosion of flavours; hazelnuts, fudge, butter, minerals and just keep getting better and better all through the evening. Palate shows lots of acidity and mature red apples and with a very long fresh finish of plums and lemon. Of course there's a lot of wonderful youthfulness when drinking this, that screams that remaining bottles should be kept in the coldest cellar for a very long time to come. And at the same time it's drinking wonderfully already with a nose showing lots of incipient maturity and a fresh and delightful palate that makes you want to drink it in large and voluptuous sips. This is a wonderful cuvée that will keep on evolving for many decades more.

After the Billecart, this Pol was expressive and sexy. Redolent with yeast, brioche, some honey. The palate was excellent, very well balanced but with enough fruit and acid to give it some pizzazz. Shoe Dinner with Tomasso Malani (Crown Wine Cellars, 18 Deep Water Bay Drive, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Drank as an aperititif and without sufficient contemplation whilst several of us had a shoe-fitting prior to dinner with the shoe-maker. Gorgeous as always. Vibrant mousse and very persistent tiny pinprick bubbles. Nose is fresh straw, Granny Smith apples and just a hint of brioche. Succulent, fresh and mouthwatering on the palate. Can only continue to get better over the next 3-5 years at a minimum. This has to be the value bargain of the 2002 vintage.

Right off the bat the nose showed a nice balance of brightness and bready elements. Also some citrus notes. Just delicious on the palate with nice toast, orange and lemon peel, good spice. There's some malt or vanilla creaminess poking its head out occasionally, and almost a saline flavor from the concentration. Spice and saline finish. This is excellent. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16/20.

Medium gold; nice caramelized fruit notes with earthy musty aspect--but not corked--or at most very slightly. The last bottle was very corked, so now I am very suspicious of the 4 additional bottles I bought. Very good intensity, fuller body, long. Would rate higher but for the slight must/mushroom note, which a couple others actually enjoyed.

Sparkling Wine-Tasting, Wine 11: The wine was medium lemon in colour and offered a reserved, developed nose of apple, chalk, brioche and eucalyptus. On the palate the wine showed apple, chalk, rye bread and brioche, supplemented by mild saltiness, with creamy mousse, medium-plus to high acidity and good length. A medium- to light-bodied, medium-complex, well-balanced sparkling wine. Drink now.

Jewel-bright medium straw gold colour. Reticent and fast-dissipating mousse but which leaves everlasting fruvious streams of the tiniest pinprick bubbles. Nose is gorgeous fresh-toasted wholemeal bread, an element of vanilla pod, lots of cello notes and just the slightest sweetness of a light brioche. Palate is tinglingly fresh and salivating but almost immediately rich and very toasted in different dimensions - crumpets and hazelnuts - full in the mouth, gorgeous and oaky warm in the way that reminds me of one of the first fireplaces lit in late Autumn. Lots of freshness to keep the saliva buds going and to counterpoint the toasty weight - great harmony and balance. Long aftertaste and reverberance inside the head. It leaves a long lasting aftertaste of Hovis bread. Drank contemplatively and slowly as an aperitif and a nightcap in our hotel room either side of the Dom Perignon Oenoteque 1996 we drank over dinner. Sadly, my last bottle.....simply too irristible to keep. 93+

Moderate yellow-gold; lovely medium aromatic nose, toasty, showing a little age with light hazelnut mixed with dried wheat and subtle fading fruit of apricot and mashed-up apples! Let it warm up to fully express. Fine mouth, moderate+ intensity, foamy fine bubbles, elegant but still good power. Enjoyed most after 20-30 minutes in glass, warmed up and little effervescence left.

(Disgorged fall of 2013) Distinct yellow colour. Still very mineral driven nose showing seashells, almonds, butter and lemon. Very acidious palate with lots of mineral with a balanced fruity finish. Feels a bit too closed down right now, but will probably open up in a year or two. But with 10-20 years extra cellaring then it will hopefully show some really nice notes.

Started with subtle aromas of orange blossom, apricot and peanut butter but build up to toasted brioche with honey, sunflower seeds and cinnamon. On palate so elegant, youthful and silky smooth with flavours of pistachio nuts, dry apricots, jasmine, sweet orange and wonderful fruity finish but not that long and mid palate missing. This wine is very shy and in order to appreciate to fullest needs attention to detail and patience for 1-2 hours after it's been open.

Lemony buscuit aromas, great effervecence and pearlage. The wine was very open, but there really wasn't much to it- though it was a great wine. I guess I was expecting more nuance. Upon tasting, yeasty bread notes, apple/pear, and honey. Nice, but I think I could do better for the money.

Best vintage I have tasted of this Champagne, this far. Had quite a few bottles of the “ordinary” P-R 2002 Brut Vintage, but this is definitely a step up the ladder! The nose is nuanced and complex, with toast, fudge/nougat, red apples, lovely minerals and lemon. The palate is super fresh, dry, toasty, complex, mineral driven, with lovely creamy citrus fruit, lemon juice, some apples and nuts. Great stuff, young, but with huge potential. Very P-R, and simply outstanding! Can’t wait to try the 2002 Sir W. I have huge expectations on that, based on the Brut and this, and I’m confident that the Sir W will be a killer wine when released and with a few years on its back. I’m keeping my eyes open for release. In the meantime, I will be very happy drinking this, and will have to stock up, since I believe this will be even better with another 5 – 10 years, and probably live long after that too, if you can manage to keep your hands off. Simply great! 93 +

This is really good stuff. Creamy, with a nice mousse and with red apples that already show but will develop further, and all rest on a bead of toast making this champagne a little bit dark, so to speak. Even some complexity. This wine gets a dosage of 8 grams and is aged at the domain for 8 - 9 years before release. No oak used. Compared to the non vintage wine this 2002 is more dark yellow and overall it has more minerality. On the palate very clean, full bodied, yellow fruits, beautiful citrus and good length. Beautiful freshness and not bone dry. A very, very pleasant and tasty wine.

(Disgorged in spring of 2012, 100% Chardonnay from Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize and Oger, dosage 9 gr/L)
Lovely yellow colour with extremely fine bubbles slowly rising to the surface releasing an explosion on the nose showing freshly baked bread, candied lemon and minerals and opens up with butter and lovely hazelnuts on the delicious nose.

Medium-fullish nose.

Mid gold in the glass. Very lively fine bead.

Love it!

Still a youthful yellow colour with a greenish shimmering that lead way for the lovely maturing nose showing hazelnuts, butter and yellow apples. Fresh citrus acidity at first and then showing rounder notes on the mid before the lovely lime zest bitterness and butter note takes over on the lengthy finish. Wow, what an excellent showing tonight, and still showing so much youthfulness, will this stay fresh forever?

I enjoyed this Pol Roger last night. It’s in a great spot, probably at peak. I got the first nuances of 'aged' bubbly, to go with great freshness and body. The dosage might be a bit more evident than prior bottles, perhaps that is the norm for mature champagne? At any rate, I liked it a lot and look forward to trying part 2 of it tomorrow... ok, this is even better today, the fruit and dosage are better integrated. Bright, deep, balanced, bubbly you serve to traditionalists. 92-93 pts.

Nice yellow fruit with just hints of secondary roundness and the nutty & brioche tinge that comes with age, great focus and no lack of underlying power and intensity. This is one that's built for the cellar and I am looking forward to seeing where it will be in a decade from now -I predict good things to come.

Starting to show more mature notes. The mousse was quite soft, but still definitely present. Golden in colour, with a nose that reminded me of high end Californian Chardonnay with its honey, candied lemon and toast. Would be interesting to try in 5 years time. This is still improving. 92-93 points.

Chú Xī (除夕) Dinner at Home for Chinese New Year (Our House, Hong Kong): Drop-dead gorgeous as always....and it really benefits from serving in a smallish White Burgundy glass. Vibrant mousse and very persistent tiny pinprick bubbles. Gorgeous nose of fresh straw, Granny Smith apples and just a hint of brioche. Succulent, fresh and mouthwatering on the palate. Some resonance is beginning to develop with age but this can only continue to get better over the next 3-5 years at a minimum.

I have had wine a number of times in the last year and the bottle variation has been quite high. This was a perfect bottle, alive and fresh some maturity. A great wine. A few more years in the cellar will not hurt but very nice now.

Lots of bubbles - best to leave in glass for a while to soften. VG but unfortunately can't help comparing to (albeit more expensive but) peerless Comte Taittinger BdB

Opened and decanted.

If I was an English Lord of a Manor and owned a stately home, this is the Champagne I would have as my 'house wine'. Brilliant value compared to other 2002s.

Seductive, elegant nose with citrus, oranges, and oyster minerality. Balanced.
Medium-fullish, intense, harmonius palate with beginning development. Good balance, tasty, apples, minerals, hazelnuts, good grip and a dark chocolaty finish.
Better bottle than the one tasted in november.

Champagne and 82 Bordeaux Night (Berkeley): Surprisingly good for me. Perhaps it was because I tried it after the '93 de Venoge Grand Vin des Princes. It seemed quite open and contrasted nicely with the tightly wound de Venoge. Outstanding.

Light yellow colour with an Amazing amount of small bubbles.
On the nose there's some hazelnuts mixed with vanilla cream, marzipan and minerals.
The palate shows an intense taste of citrus mixed with liquorice root and a nice long finish showing brimstone and gunpowder.

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 3/21/2014-3/22/2014 (Chicago, IL): Quite advanced nose with a light oxidative touch and aromas of baked apple and yeast. The palate is quite soft without very much acidic bite. A small bit of sweetness is detectable. Flavours of apples pop up again, but for a Champagne this comes off as quite flabby.

Slightly more closed down this time compared to when I had my first bottles, but this will surface and come out great in a couple of years.
All the stuffing needed to stand tall is in there.
Has a bit of whipped cream nutty lemon mixed flavour in it that I really love.

This is really good stuff.
Creamy, with a nice mousse and with red apples that already show but will develop further, and all rest on a bead of toast making this champagne a little bit dark, so to speak. Even some complexity. Should in due time be rated 94, maybe even 95 pts.
The 2000 vintage I had some years ago was not even close to this.

Pure, Clean, medium-fullish body. Very tight acidity. Balanced with good grip. Creamy fruit and lightly mature apple. Nice yeastiness. Definitely needs cellaring. Give it 5 years. Potentially 93 pts.

Tasted at the winery. 100% Chardonnay with all the grapes coming from Grand Cru vineyards. Aged 9 years in cellar. 8-9 gm/ltr of sugar. From a great vintage. Creamier than the other wines poured. Aromas of fresh orchard fruit and white flowers. Notes of citrus and brioche. Wonderful finesse with an elegant finish. This will be a long lived Champagne. 94 points.
