  • 1999 2000 Barolo Barbaresco (Gemma): Impression, potpurri, good mouthfeel and acid.

  • Pronounced nose intensity with notes of mushroom, spices, toast, dried cranberries. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin.

  • Consistent with my last note although I had to open an oxidised one and a corked one first.
The nose is really perfumed and floral (lovely violet/rose pastille quality) but with a lovely Barolo mineral earthiness as I noted last time but it is quite robustly fruity and quite ripe on the palate, with a lovely inner sweetness. Perhaps the comparison with the 99 underplayed this.
This is a fabulous Barolo: perfumed, elegant, yet rich.
With time and air this just gets better and better: extraordinary perfume.

  • NK Monprivato Vertical (Chez Goldberg, Greenwich Village, NYC): [Opened around 4pm, then double-decanted around 7pm.] Muted black fruit nose. Long and tasty, but not the depth or complexity of the last 5 or 6 wines. Still, a tasty beverage to drink over the coming decade.

  • Double decanted in the AM and drunk over several hours

Ripe, round, and perfumed on the nose with plump red fruits and florals. Fleshy and well balanced if less detailed and structured than the other wines. It's supple and well balanced, but lacks relative depth and complexity of its peers. Nonetheless, a lovely wine drinking well right now I'd drink up on this one. While I suspect it will hold for some time, I doubt it improves. 91.

  • Purchased shortly after release from Garagiste. My bottles have always had a slightly volatile and stewed fruit aspect to the scent and flavors on opening. This mostly blows off with air revealing a very pretty, smooth and silky barolo with, cherry, rose, and sandalwood flavors. Long finish. Very nice but not up to the level of some of the bottles other tasters have reported. No evidence of heat damage on the cork or neck. Extra long cork still looks fresh and intact. These have been well stored since purchase. Minor heat damage in shipping or is this typical for this wine? I wish these were at the level of others reports as I have two more in the cellar.

  • Pretty and high-toned nose, very floral. Really perfumed.
Light on the palate, very elegant. This lacks the stuffing of the 1999 but is not lacking persistence. Tannins slightly more apparent on the finish as a result.
A lovely pretty wine but the 99 is clearly in a different league.

  • White Truffles & Nebbiolo: Monprivato x5. This is the most is a touch flabby relative to the other four though still classic in flavor. Won't be as long lived as the 1990, though that's a high bar.

  • Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume V (Chicago, IL): #12478/22366. This was my least favourite of the Monprivato flight -- it showed a surprising earthiness and overall just an unwillingness to come out and play. There are a few brown tones to the fruit here, as well as fairly prickly tannins. Probably best to let this age a little more given those tannins, though I don't clearly see in what aspect this wine would improve with aging -- this doesn't display the fruity opulence of 2000 to start, so further aging will probably continue to reduce the amount of fruit remaining.

  • This wine is a tough one to figure out. I have had glorious, elegant bottles and some that have been flat and uninspired. This falls in the middle. I opened it two hours before drinking and my initial impression was terrible. Earth is a nice element n wine but this opened like a glass of dirt. After 90 minutes thing started to round out. Three hours in there are hints of lovely red fruits and rose, but this remains a stern, elemental wine that is all intellectual and not very emotional. A confounding bottling. (90)

  • Glorious bottle. Apologies go good friend dbkitc who opened a bottle on my recommendation (and we shared notes during a Zoom tasting lagrst night. This might have been the highlight of some excellent drinking over the course of the shutdown. This has every single element that makes Monprivato such a great terroir in perfect balance and harmony but all scaled to this vintage. Bright red fruit inflected with rose petals (fresh and dried) and iron shavings, high toned, perhaps a hint of VA that adds to he enjoyment, great balance and nearly resolved tannins with all of the same elements. I know these notes are incomplete, but totally reminds me of unforgettable bottles of 85 and 89 but without the same heft and power, but all of the glorious notes perfectly balanced.

  • (mostly) Castiglione Falletto vs Serralunga, 2005-earlier (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): Nose: There is a great amount of perfume and depth right away with strawberries, red cherries, raspberries, black tea, licorice, spice notes, smoke, earth, tobacco, tar, rose petals, and wild flowers. The nose is enveloping and has kicked into that next gear as it has more of an ethereal quality right now.

Taste: The feel is Medium bodied with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The structure is starting to pull back and let the feel shine as it's silky and refined with strawberries, red cherries, raspberries, spice notes, smoke, tobacco, black tea, earth, tobacco, rose petals, and a lot of wild flowers on the finish.

Overall: This has entered the awesome phase of its life. There is an immense amount of perfume and depth that shows off a lot of red fruits with the tertiary notes starting to emerge, but they don't dominate. This is right in that zone and is drinking beautifully.

  • What a wine! Pretty much everyone called it their WOTN. Perfumed red fruit, floral, fennel, all-spice, with fully integrated super fine tannins and a wonderful inner sweetness. This had that classic Burgundian elegance that you hope for in great Monprivato.

  • First bottle from a case of 12. Absolutely stunning. Perfumed nose, dried roses, tobacco, tar, red fruit. Understated, cool fruit, elegant on the palate, notes of tobacco and earth. Well balanced, great structure, focused and pure. Barolo the way I like it.

  • Needed about an hour to open. Not much on the nose. Typical Barolo appearance, light bodied. On the palate fennel, game, some pencil, dried roses. Delicate and refined. Seems on the downside of the hill.

  • Lovely wine with great nose and classic reddish brown color. Really drinking well now but no need to hurry as I suspect this wine still has many years in its future.

  • In the seven years since I last tried this wine I cannot believe how much weight and heft it had gained. Rich, purple almost!, heady, classic tar and roses profile and a far more viscous texture than the ethereal bottle in 2010. This bottle felt just a little lacking in freshness and as enjoyable as it was I would have preferred a touch more elegance. Very instructive bottle though!

  • Absolutely sensational - my wine of the year and not far off my wine of the decade! I opened this with trepidation, fearing that it might be over the hill, but I needn't have worried.

Rich, light red in colour with some fading. A beautiful strawberry nose and long, complex palate. Supple and vibrant with very balanced acidity and tannins. Simply amazing! Barolo afficionados might want to keep this still further (and I suspect it might last a bit longer), but for me this was perfection.

Mrs H loved this too, but wouldn't have awarded anything like 100 points - 89 in fact!

  • Lovely, mature Barolo. This bottle was fully mature, however, notbeqsy to judge. I had a Produttori Montestefano '96 two weeks ago, which, though pretty elegant, was ways more powerful and present. Decantedthis wine for about two hours which wasn't necessary, I guess. This vintage ist fully mature in my view, I had 2000 Produttori Brabaresco several times a couple years ago, and can confirm the maturity there easiliy. Have another bottle, to open in a year or two. Very elegant wine though, worth it. Possibly improves, 93p+

    Better on day two, +1p

  • Decanted 1/2 hr. Pale/medium garnet core, wide pale mahogany/garnet rim. Nose shows subtle red fruit, florals, gently creamy. Light/medium bodied, elegant, strawberry, touch of cream, balanced acidity, just a trace of very fine tannin on the good length finish, with a touch of brown sugar. Harmonious, ready but no particular hurry.

  • Barolo tasting dinner....
This was by far and large the wine of the night. Beautiful, classic nose of violets and tar, very light on its feet with smooth, silky tannins, and a long, harmonious finish. No hard edges in this wine. Drinking beautifully right now.

I can't imagine this getting any better than it is now. Drink 2016-2020.

  • opened late and only got a two hour decant. started shy on the nose but eventually this silky light bodied yet intense red fruit of cherry/strawberry was impecable for balance and lenght. Enough tannins to ensure some longevity. Remarkable in that the lighter bodied elements and structure outweighed the lack balsamic influences. A Dujac type of Barolo

  • Sweet, dried ripe fruit on the nose together with quite a bit of volatile acidity and sticky glue. But there is also a bit of leather, earth and perfumed herbs.

Very austere on the palate with a medium+ acidity, dry medium+ tannins, medium+ body and a medium + finish. Good length, but with a streak of bitterness to it.

Very rough and unpolished, might need a few more years in the cellar but will probably always need a bit of cheese or meat to come around.

  • G. Mascarello Monprivato vertical. '82, '89, '00, '01 and '07.

    Clear, pale intensity, garnet color.

Clean, developing nose with a more toasty profile than the others wines in the tasting. Medium(+) intensity with aromas of dried strawberry, cherry, violets, basil, sage, gravel dust, espresso, tobacco and wood.

Dry, medium(+) bodied with a medium acidity and high but smooth tannins. Very rugged mouthfeel with a medium(+) intensity. Cherry core, strawberry, cacao, violet and wood. The finish is medium(+) and slightly rough with notes of black olive and wood.

This was the most austere wine in the flight. Lacking the finesse and elegance of '89 and '01 but still has lot of Barolo-typicity. Will probably come together better along with food.

  • Wound up really tight at first needed a few hours to open up. Great aromatics, classic red floral notes and tart red fruit almost cranberry light aesthetic. This changed on the palate tremendously over 3 to 4 hours that we tried it, very tight to start almost unyielding it was a sharp and precise, later opened up to be certainly an acidic style but very delineated, with a Burgundian like elegance that is almost weightless. For me, this is Barolo!

  • In which we ate all the truffles (Chicago, IL): Bright cherry. Very light and elegant, but complex at the same time. The palate is moderately dense, but the most prominent thing here are the incredibly beautiful aromatics. Red-fruited on the palate, and somehow the floral character is still present. Tart acids that aren't screechy. I like the integration of all the elements here, forming a very pretty package.

  • Typical aromatic profile with roses tar licorice and truffles. Silky smooth and elegant with silky ripe round tannin. Decadent and near perfect balance. The finish explodes with ripe red fruit and fresh acidity. This is a beauty.

  • Popped and poured. Understated nose with traces of classic Barolo. Palate contains nice acid, well restrained fruit, and strong though not gripping tannins. Overall not sufficiently expressive and not enough Barolo typicity.

  • Yikes, looks like there's lots of bottle variation with this producer so as my friend Chris says "I think it's an Italian thing". His bottle was very nice although I had some challenges picking up and of the classic neb notes like rose petal or tar but there was a leathery backbone. . But still a crowd pleaser.

  • Another disappointing bottle of this very inconsistent wine. A pristine light red/pink color and a nice, rose petal nose filled me with hope that this bottle would show as well as one a few months ago - too bad. As my wife said, this wine is just flat. Nothing wrong, just nothing terribly right. Oh well. (88)

  • Enjoyed this wine for my wife and my wedding anniversary at a new Piedmontese restaurant called Osteria Langhe. I decanted the wine for an hour before going to the restaurant and then had it put back into a decanter once we were settled at our table.
When I first opened the bottle I tasted it and was very happy with how the wine was tasting. By the time we tasted it again at the restaurant it was pretty tight and not hugely expressive. The notes were all very dark and balsamic. It really wasn't until the last glass that it started to really show it's stuff. Beautiful dark berries, bitter dark chocolate, black licorice, and violets floating above.
This is still very primary and will easy go another 5 years or probably more like 10 years before it is coming to it's peak.

  • By far the best bottle of this wine I have tasted. Significantly more depth than the mostly superficial previous bottles. Lovely leather coated rose petal nose. Some richness on the palate that is well buffered by uplifting acid. A joy that opened well throughout the evening. (93)

  • A bit underwhelming. The fruit is present but not totally appealing. The structure is good for the vintage but there is a slightly muddy quality to the flavor and a hollow middle that all add up to fairly uninspired wine - and this from a producer I normally like.

  • Beautiful ruby color - starting to show a touch of orange at rim. The nose is kind of tame - takes some coaxing to reveal itself. When it does there is some tobacco leaf and red fruit. The palate, like the nose, is subtle. The balance is pretty if the flavor profile is more masculine. Certainly a good wine but it lacks some flavor impact – as a lover of wines that are elegant, this lacks depth of truly great examples. Based on this and past bottles, I think people are giving this wine a pass because of the producer. I like it, but can't say much more than that. Disappointing. (88)

  • Another wine that lasted in the Coravin only for about two weeks, because it was just too compelling. Monprivato does equally well in warmer vintages, and this wine is starting to become drinkable, and provide the joy of Monprivato in warm vinrages, with the compelling unmistakable aromas of Monprivato uplifted by just an accent of the good VA. Not saying this will achieve the stratospheric heights of say the 1985, but it is quite compelling now and will only get better.

  • Supremely elegant Barolo. The smell of roses is so powerful and compelling, it almost crowds out the other secondary aromas, which still come through, albeit in the shadow of the floral prettiness. Lovely flavors of sour cherries and perfumy strawberry fruit, with a bit of smoke and just the faintest hint of fine-grained tannin on the otherwise silky finish. A perfect Monprivato to drink now while you wait for the more classic vintages to come of age.

  • Chicago Italian Lovers round 3-2000 Barolos (Sapori Trattoria, Chicago IL): The palate was much thinner than I would expect and the acidity was extremely shrill. The nose also seemed off as the whole wine was a big teeter-totter. It didn't seem like a sound bottle.

  • Color: Brick red, a lovely age filters the light in the wine to a warm delicate hue browning a little at the rim. This looks like a 25 year-old barolo. I love barolo that is not over-burdened with color for the sake of color.

Nose: Beautiful nose of crushed berries, strawberries and tree bark.

Taste: Lovely lite red fruit with a subdued personality. Most of the tannin has melted away and the wine is very balanced. Seems much older than it is but other than that, so obvious signs of the warm vintage. Really elegant and pure. Not a lot of complexity but it has class to burn.

Overall: This is a beautiful wine. This wine is sweet and feminine and there is depth to the low undertones. I think over time, as the wine ages, it could add a little more weight as Monprivato sometimes does. If that happens, in time, this wine will be sureal.

J'adore! 93 pts

  • Subtle and aromatic. Probably reaching it's peak. This wine was very enjoyable in 2010 - 2012, but now it seems to be losing it's punch. The 2000 Cavallotto has so much more going for it, and wish I had more of it. but I can happily enjoy the Monprivato. For me, these two wines are the QPR leaders in Barolo, one lighter the other darker.

  • Somewhat disappointing but consistent w/ other bottles - decanted for a 2-3 hours, but nose still tight - dead leaves, slightest hint of mint on the nose - medium tannins and finish - its a decent wine but not worth the entry ticket...

  • Subtle wine for a Barolo with medium body and floral and cherry notes. Didn't get much tannins, and had a very soft gentle flavor, was the group's favorite wine in the 2000 Barolo tasting, but I preferred some of the others with firmer tannins and more body in the mid-palate.

  • My Birthday Celebration (Kingyo, Marina Square): I thought this was wonderful - as Burgundy-like a Barolo as I have ever had. It had a clear, soaring nose, with beautiful aromas of dark cherries and sweet berries, roses and earth, tar and smoke, all ringed with a lovely hint of fresh herbs and a touch of wood spice. Absolutely beautiful. The palate was charm personified. Fine tannins have started to soften out, revealing lovely layers of sweet, fleshy, juicy, and absolutely pure cherry flavours that filled the mouth with joyful, perfumy notes laced with more floral accents. The finish stretched on beautifully after that, still showing the wine's youth with its touch of fine tannins framing gentle notes of wood spice and a twist bittersweet herbs. With time, some smoky bacon notes floated out at the back-palate. Young though this was, it already had a lovely sense of integration and balance, along with an understated elegance shown most in its almost effortless sense of focus and purity. Really wonderful stuff, and given the fact that it is from an early vintage, actually starting to drink pretty well with some time in the glass. It says something that it was the fastest bottle to be downed on a night with many nice wines. This does deserve time though, and I think it will be a thrilling wine in 3-4 years' time. Special mention goes to the fact that this was a great pairing with the beef dish.

  • Elegant and delicately serious. This wine is hitting its stride, and becoming very pleasant, even upon initial opening. Still fresh with fruit, flavors of vanilla, caramel, orange-rind and cherry. Smoky rather than tarry. Just wonderful. I'm happy giving this 94 points based on subtlety rather than power.

  • Pale, mahogany; where's the bouquet?! And where's the fruit? Loads of acidity, all grip on finish. Erm..24 hours later the nose more apparent, showing typicité. The palate has softened but finish only improved to attenuated. A mean, unexciting wine. Faulty? Not that I could detect.

  • Drinking very nicely. Tannins, fruit, acid in easy-drinking balance. Opens more at 24 hours. More elegant than powerful, with interesting subtle flavors. Comparison with Cavollotto Riseerva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is very interesting, as the Cavallotto is more bold and tannic which makes it definitely a point better.

  • Definitely a well made wine - I want to like it and I do - but I don't love it. Once again, its nebbiolo teasing its consumer. At first the nose is totally closed but starts to give - hints of a beautiful nebbiolo fruit start to emerge. and starts to build but its just not there - keep waiting or drink before it closes?? The wine has a nice structure and tannins are at about the right level but the wine never really gives. double decanted - same. Drank next day and a bit more open but still tight. A solid wine but leaves you feeling that somehow you have missed its full potential...

  • Pale rose colored; Delicately serious. Very pleasant but without much intensity at 24 hours. More spice-box than fruity, but nothing strong is really coming forward. I'm guessing we get a bunch more fruit at 48 hours; let's see. Two years since my last taste which was quite muted.

[48 hours]. Yep, some nice cherry comes forward, plus more complexity and a bit of supporting tannin. Light acids & modest tannins, but that merely adds to the restrained-not-fresh impressions. The flavors changed from light-spicy to a little more earthy-spicy, not the tar you often get, more woody or fall forest-floor than iron. Very nice in a rich, complex but not intense way. I keep savoring my memories of this wine, which implies we have something special here.

Very interesting to compare with Colle dei Venti (actually Icardi) Barolo 2000. The CdV is so fruity and forward, while the Monprivato is so elegant and restrained. The former is certainly a nice wine, but the latter is almost magical. I had to move it to 93 pts.

  • Consumed at Prima's restaurant in August or September of 2009, after having a bottle of the same wine at the Waldhotel in Davos Switzerland. The bottle in Switzerland, perhaps because it was not open as long, was more austere and linear, only gradually opening with some time in the glass. That, or the wine was haunted by the rain-swept hills by the ghost of Thomas Mann. The bottle at Prima's was more expressive, certainly not fully mature, but with excellent ripe fruit at its core, which is etched with Piemonte acids. A wine with real class and breeding...

  • East Bank / HDH Tasting (Chicago): A nice nose of cherries, leather and spice. The palate is very ripe with not as much acidity and backbone as I would like. • This is an extraordinarily promising wine. Lots of complexity, ripe, plummy fruit. Seems to be getting better all along and then, BAM, this seel curtin of impenetrable tannins descend. But there is so much fruit and structure, thhat the patient will doubtlessly be rewarded in time. My personal taste goes more to the structure of 97 99 and 01, but of the ripe vintages I have tasted recently -- 98 Bartolo Mascarello, 00 Mascarello Serralunga, this G. Mascarello is perhaps the post exciting, and the pricing is not to be believed! Still available around $60 and a steal at that price.

  • Fairly austere -- hard to say if this is all it has to show, or if it has shut down and requires several years (I tend towards the latter). Fait bouquet is of sour cherries and perhaps roses, but the "cherry" and "sour" are slightly disjointed. Distinctly acidic and hot in the mouth. Tried again after 18 hours; alcohol has dissipated somewhat but wine has not opened further.

Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment

  • Still a little reticent. Tannins and acids are somewhat light. At 24 hours, the fruit is trying to come out, but I think it needs a couple more years to open things up a bit more or pick up some power. This is an interesting style: It isn't fundamentally fruity; more toward the iron than the cherry or tar. Recently I discovered this iron flavor in a 1996 Pira Margheria, which was from a much more structured year than 2000. In the Pira case we had a lot more intensity and, perhaps with the extra age, the iron evolved into blood, truffle and blue cheese. This may be a lighter version of that.

[second try] Not nearly as good as the first. Fruit and extraction moderate, or else, just closed down. Much as I liked this before, I have to lower this a little.

  • Okay, but too young to judge I think. I could feel the alcohol, which was disappointing. It seemed thin as well. Will wait a few years perhaps to try another.

  • Tones of somke, wood, and flowers integrate well with the red fruit to reveal a wine that -- although not entirley backward -- still tastes pretty young and shows enough depth to be cellared for a good few years. Although it drinks fairly well now, it deserves more time to release all its potential and complexity. A very nice and harmonious effort. Drink from 2008 until 2020.

  • Zachys Icons of Italy Tasting (Zachys): Gorgeous, ethereal nose. Elegant red fruit and limestone, with a touch of cinnamon or nutmeg.

On the palate, this is a tannic monster. Everything is in perfect balance and harmony, with the striking exception of the tannins. Beautiful aromatics, great bright red fruit, a touch of cedar, some great acids. Needs many, many years. Probably would give this a low-90's score based on this showing but given how young it is I have difficulty knowing.

  • Medium depth, garnet to brick colour. Fantastic aromas of rose and perfume, fruit and flowers. Medium tannins with powerful yet female and burgundy style on the taste. An excellent and very enjoyable wine.
