From magnum. Opened for friends & neighbors at a belated New Year's party. Very nice, mature, tangy & saline. From magnum. No sign of oxidation or excessive age. Temperature counts for a lot - drink at cool room temp for the best depth and complexity. 'Fridge temp or anything near to it strips the wine of flavor and character.

Much better showing than the previous bottle. Full of lemons, honeydew and seaspray. A gentler, less acidic palate presence than some years, reflecting the riper vintage (although it's not soft or flabby), but with no lack of oceany mineral character.
I think this was the first vintage of Briords I ever tasted, more than ten years ago. It has all come together very nicely.

Magnum. What a gorgeous wine. Still dynamic and bright. All the individual Briords elements: salinity, wet stones, tart apple have knit together beautifully into a compressed, focused whole.

This bottle showed quite advanced. Darkening gold color, some nuttiness, honeyed yellow fruit, a bit short. Drinkable but I suspect more pristine bottles would show better.

Great wine. Beautifully integrated, long, balanced. Notes of pear and citrus. Light with a nice acidic backbone. Fully mature, I"d say. My last one, wish I had more.

I enjoy the roundness and more integrated flavours that aging gives muscadets. This was drinking really well now, with aging also adding richness, but of course the acids and minerality are still there in the background (A-).

Wine Tasting Group - No Theme - Apr. 13, 2019 (Classic Dallas): PnP. Honeysuckle, tart apples, fantastic levels of minerals, salty sea spray that ends on a savory, herbal finish. The wine has rounded out to give a more creamy mouthfeel than the younger 2017 Briords but still with excellent acids. My favorite of the night.

PopnPour, tasted over 2 hrs -translucent light gold -faint apple wet stone -med acidity lends a tangy note to the med- weight mid-palate with sappy apple faint honey and a haunting ripe yellow fruit element on the moderately long finish -still quite fresh, very good now with no sign of fading, remarkable how well this wine can age

Chatham. So good. Plenty of salinity and acidity for oysters and the relative fullness of the vintage. A good but not great vintage that keeps getting better.

From memory, a good bottle - as expected - crisp and tasty without flourishes, what you look for in these wines. Drank over several days, and the last glass was the best - the characteristically tightly-wound Muscadet exterior relaxing to show its surprising depth and complexity as it approaches maturity. The potential for development of these wines, and their longevity, never ceases to catch my attention, whatever the headline conditions of the vintage are.

Even better than the awesome bottle I had last year. This bottle seemed so fresh and alive with lots of time ahead. Medium yellow color. Nose shows sea salt, chalk dust, oyster brine, along with honey, candle wax, lemon curd, lime peel, apricot. Precise, racy, energetic on the palate but the textural depth is so awesome. Balanced wonderfully. Lemon curd, green apple and apricot provide the base for the complex elements of oyster shell, crushed limestone and chalk, dusty minerals, salted almond. Gorgeous stuff. Paired nicely with a simple shrimp and veggie pasta.

From magnum. Light yellow. Bright lemon, some chalk- there is almost a saline quality to this that pairs so perfectly with fresh raw oysters. One of the best values in the world of wine.

On a blazing hot summer day, this was absolutely perfect. 2009 is unique in a richer, waxier way, but I found this wine still showed plenty of ripping acidity, brisk mineral and oceanic elements, and lots of tangy fruit. Nose of saline, lime zest, lemon curd, oyster shell. Palate shows this wonderfully rich textural element that plays off this racy acidity, result is great balance and depth even though this is a light/medium-bodied wine. Apricot, orange, lime zest, rocking with these oyster, chalky, sea salty notes, some nougat and honeycomb elements as well. I think I'll hold on to my last bottle for a year or two, but I don't think 2009 is typical in its long-aging potential, but who knows. All I know is this is continually the most dynamic $20 I spend on a bottle of wine.

Very light gold/lemon in color - crystal clear. Moderate aromas of lemon/citrus but dominated by an intense minerality/wet stones, beautifully perfumed. Full on the palate, with citrus/ unripe peach with great salinity. Fantastic minerality again with medium(+) acidity. One of the best $15 bottles of wine Ive ever had the pleasure of drinking!!

Consumed over two nights. Overall, a light and elegant wine. Sea salt, minerals, lemon zest... I can't quite decide if the acidity is correct... at moments it seems slightly flabby, but then at others, the lemon acidity seems to zing! Drink now.

Drank this bottle over two days. Moving past its slightly shut-down phase and into young maturity, where acidity is well-integrated with general body, minerality, and iodine flavors, but depth and pungency aren't yet fully on display. The texture is smooth, seamless, and pleasing. A fine wine which may show more overt complexity in another year or three, but is a pleasure to drink now with a good meal.

Consistent with previous note. Saline, crisp, detailed, nuanced, oily, fresh, and young still. This is brilliant as it warms and sits in glass. Hasn't budged in 4 years, this can easily go another decade, and might be worth it for the gained complexity, though this is a superb Muscadet now. A true winner.

Light yellow/gold in the glass; "sea scents"on the nose, briny like you often get in Chablis.
Taut and crisp on the palate, but also coming across as somewhat dilute. Still, not bad, with a nice finish - hard to say right now where this might be heading given that hole in the mid-palate, but it's pretty likable right now.

PopnPour, tasted over 2 hrs -translucent light gold -fairly muted -barely med acidity, light weight but palate staining sappiness on complex mid-palate with ripe apple nutmeg/spice elements, moderately long finish -fatter and almost lush for a Muscadet, not as much cut and focus of a typical Pepiere Briords but more complexity and richness, starting to reach maturity

30 min double decant, drank it bit warmer than I would have preferred. Nose a bit muted. Tasty but not very expressive on the mid-palate, but huge dose of salinity on the back end. Rating withheld as this wine didnt get the attention it deserved.

In a nice in-between place. Youthfull slithery fat is shed; mature depth and salty pungency is not yet apparent. Shows almost like a crisp Scharzhofberger Riesling with no residual sugar: the same sense of pure mountain brook water tinted with slatey minerality. A bottle like this always makes me think of the water the Ents give Pippen an Merry to drink in the Lord of the Rings, which makes them grow in stature and their hair curl. I will try to let my remaining bottles go a bit longer now before diving in again.

The usual Clos de Briords character: rainwater purity, minerality and citrusy fruit. A touch of oxidation suggests that this might not make it in the long haul, but perhaps this cork was particularly suspect.
Light yellow in the glass; a hint of lime & salinity on the nose.
Refreshing and brisk on the palate - in a nice place right now, but I don't see any indication that this isn't capable of another decade in the cellar (although whether it will last that long in MY cellar is another question altogether).

Better the second day, when it shows as a wine of real distinction and character, with balance, thrust, some complexity. Delish. The first day, give it an ample decant.

Okay, though less interesting than I recall the last bottle being. Perhaps transitioning from youthful-fruity to adolescent-tense. Good with Salmon, showing adequate body and acidity in combination to stand up to the fatty flesh of the fish.

White Frenchies at Sea Change (Sea Change at the Guthrie, Mpls, MN): Pale gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Perfect as expected with the oysters.

A good showing. Very much about stone on the nose, wet, and a bit yeasty. There is the ripeness of the vintage, but this shows itself not in terms of richness nor plumpness of fruit, but in what I experienced to be a lack of fineness and detail to the flavors, relative to vintages like '07 and '10. And still, it was lovely wine and delicious with clams and striped bass.

My fourth bottle, this one a magnum. This wine was fantastic, probably the best muscadet I've had. There was some orange and white peach fruit but the dominant aromas and flavors here were salinity, sea spray, and shore pebbles. You couldn't come closer to drinking the Atlantic ocean without putting your head underwater. Impressive depth and concentration on the palate, where the lees add substance but don't overpower the other flavors (an issue I've had with some of the more expensive Muscadet super-cuvees that see extended lees aging). I must heartily disagree with anyone who criticized the 2009 for being too ripe and soft. This has plenty of acidity and all the mineral character you could want. As you'd expect, a fantastic match with soft shell crabs. And at $16/bottle, one of the great values in the wine world.

Medium green-yellow color. Aromas of pear and apricot with some sweet lemon-lime and floral notes. Palate has sweet lime, mineral, apricot, and a green melon finish that is medium long. This worked great as the base for a shellfish boil, but actually clashed with the lime thyme and shellfish meat (mussels, clams, and raw oysters served before). Great to cook with or as apertif. Better paired with a salad course where more acid and bitter elements are present to act as counterpoints. Drink.

Popped, poured, consumed over 90 mintes. Started out a little thin, simple and weak, but as it warmed from cellar temperature and breathed, it slowly added flesh, intensity and complexity until it was positively singing with layers of citrus, tart green apple, a hint of nectarine, and stony saline minerality. Perfect with roasted chicken in lemon and garlic sauce.

This effort has a super QPR. I rarely comment on price, butin this case it is necessary. The fresh, vivid and expressive nose in this wine is amazing at about 10 €. It is like drinking minerals and citrus fruit combined with the cold air of the Atlantic. The only drawback is a rather thin end-palate. Performed very well tonight.

Pale gold, nose of wax over rocks. Palate of pineapple and lemon over crushed seashells. Bright acidity, cuts through the fruit but both linger on the tongue. The longer it's open, the more honeyed it is. Delicious as always!

Starting to gain a creamier mouthfeel which typically happens with muscadets after a year, at least for me. Not nearly as austere as previous bottles. The 2009 vintage was such a success for the Loire Valley, in my mind. The ripeness did not detract from its terrior as it has in other growing regions. This is one of the best muscadets on the market and at about $15 is a great reason to explore the Loire Valley's values.

Nez assez expressif de melon miel et de citron. Bouche incroyablement saline, pierreuse, c’est complexe et intriguant, dans un style presqu’austère. Good, but a bit on the forward and fruity side for a Muscadet. Still retains the classic lemon zest and chalk nose, excellent mineral and acidic cut, but with an added pear-like element I found a bit flabby. Nice in all ways, but I'd choose another vintage of this wine. Over time, we'll see...

White pear aromas among a strong mineral sense and lemony citrus. Lightly expressive palate with ripe white pear in front of minerally acids. This is lighter in expression as well as concentration than some other vintages. That being said it still very lively and energetic. Held up well over night though there was some bitterness on the second evening. Always an outstanding value.

Much more richly fruited than the regular Muscadet and is a nice drink, probably very refreshing once the summer heat and humidity arrive. But it's missing incisive acidity I look for in Muscadet, though the minerality is present. Hard to argue with for $11 though.

Lemon mousse with a hint of salt. Lacks a teeny bit of acidity that would make this outstanding, but still quite nice with Fanny Bay oysters and red snapper ceviche. A week later, this was about 1/3 bottle. Still tasty, maybe even with more weight. Fruit still intense.

Muscadet is really becoming the value wine for me. And I say that meaning I would pay $25-30 for this wine. I have always veiwed Muscadet as a cheaper alternative to Sancerre but I have come to realize the lighter qualities to Muscadet are really more elegent qualites. Love the fresh herbs, sea breeze, grapefruit and lemon on the nose and palate. And the acids are so shape but rarely intrusive. A great wine at an even better value.

Spritzy, vidid, freshly squeezed lime juice and sea salt on the nose. There's a screechy acidity level up front with lemon and lime, which is then completely rounded out on the mid palate through finish with a creamier, weightier texture. I like how the mouthfeel develops from front to back. Not typically a wine people would think about long term aging, but I'd love to put a case away and drink it over 10 years.

Intense, ripe green melon and tropical fruit flavors, supported by high but balanced acid. Loads of minerality. Complex and long. Nice, almost creamy mouthfeel, which keeps the acid from getting too sharp. This is a touch severe/austere in personality at this youthful stage. Re-corked half the bottle in the fridge for the next day, and it did not budge at all.

I wasn't expecting this to be a dry wine and the surprise was a pleasant one. Floral on the palate with a tight finish. We had a white creamy pasta dish. California Vs Burgundy Blind (Frank Murray's Casa): Served blind. Decanted about 5 hours before serving. Bright and big nose for the type showing pear and minerals strongly. Bought a magnum at Plumpjacks while visiting my daughter in SFO. They suggested it was the wine to go with the Dungeness crab. Not only was did it pair beautifully, it was the best Muscadet that I've ever had. Light complex fruit, with acidity and the creaminess mentioned in the prior reviews. The the minerally finish that had a hint of shellfish mixed in.

Drinking this, I'm reminded of all the money I've wasted in my life on wines that cost more than this - hell, on wines at any price, that offer so much less value. Which thoughts depress me until I take another sip of the Briords, and find solace. Yet, I don't want to make it seem like this is impressive simply for the marvelous price-value ratio it provides. This is just flat-out fantastic wine. Starts somewhat creamy and plush, with ripe pear and cantaloupe flavors, but rapidly this tightens up as a wave of quartzitic minerality floods the fruit in a white stone tidal wave. That tidal wave reference is very apt, as the trademark salinity of Ollivier's Muscadets becomes the backdrop on which the tart fruit flavors are etched. I read in the other notes here that right now this shows better on day two, and I'm sure they're quite correct, but as of this writing no bottle of 09 Briords I've opened has survived to see the sunrise. Must be sure to test this assertion at some point... which will unfortunately require not draining the bottle upon opening... not sure my willpower is sufficiently robust... Oh, and bottled under real cork, so no need to worry about cellaring this beauty for a few (or more) years.

Consistent with first bottle. This note from day 4...corked in fridge. A subtle, intriguing anise note on the nose. Fruit has faded, but retains a juicy core that is not dissimilar to the NZ sauvignon blancs. Honeydew melon and some starfruit. A clean, slightly minerally finish. Outstanding.

The other notes are right: this NEEDS air, and maybe time. On day one, it was fairly simple and closed down: some nice pure lemony fruit with a strong acidic backbone, but without depth. Recorked and stuck in the fridge. On day two, this started off the same, but after an hour or so the lemon fruit started to fill out, and after two or three hours it was still growing, with the fruit aspect taking on a range of flavors, from citrusy lemon and orange to melony honeydew/cantaloupe, with some chalky minerality adding depth and complexity to the fruit. Finishes long and pure with cleansing acidity.

more generous than then past few Briords at this stage of its life. the aromas are lovely and clear - lemon, a bit of yeast, springwater. the wine feels relaxed, as if it's already gone through that young tightly wound period. i've learned enough about this wine to know that based on this one bottle, i have no idea what's really going on here. certainly seems like it wants to be enjoyed early.

Leaner and more mineral-laden, with slight vegetal green, compared to the Domaine de la Pinardiere muscadet. Likable, consistent with prior vintages of this wine, for those who are into salinity more than fruitiness in their wine. 89-90.

Taut and crisp on the palate, but also coming across as somewhat dilute. Still, not bad, with a nice finish - hard to say right now where this might be heading given that hole in the mid-palate, but it's pretty likable right now.

This worked great as the base for a shellfish boil, but actually clashed with the lime thyme and shellfish meat (mussels, clams, and raw oysters served before). Great to cook with or as apertif. Better paired with a salad course where more acid and bitter elements are present to act as counterpoints. Drink.

The 2009 vintage was such a success for the Loire Valley, in my mind. The ripeness did not detract from its terrior as it has in other growing regions. This is one of the best muscadets on the market and at about $15 is a great reason to explore the Loire Valley's values.

Pale yellow color with hints of green. Aromas of green melon, granitic stone, and spiced pear. The palate shows old vine sap with a deep stony character with a sweet melon and spicy pear note riding the structure. The finish is long. A chalkiness shows up with the granite elements. Easy and delicious. Drink.

I wasn't expecting this to be a dry wine and the surprise was a pleasant one. Floral on the palate with a tight finish. We had a white creamy pasta dish. The pairing was OK but honestly the wine was better on its own. All present had pleasant things to say about the wine. At 12.99 I might buy another.

This is open and drinking really well, a ton of flinty minerals, but also some fruit in the 09 version.
Very enjoyable with pan fried scallops.
Interesting that at the moment this is much more expressive then the 09 Gras Mouton from Pepiere.

This is a classic Briords, maybe a little more plump, a little friendlier, but it still has plenty of bracing acidity to go with its green melon fruit. Lovely wine, drinking better younger than, say, the '07 did.

Salty and mineral aromas. Focused, pure flavors of minerals and lemon with bracing acidity. Some saltiness in the rich, lingering lemon finish. Going just as strong on day 2 as it did on day 1. I hope to be drinking this over the next few decades. The only question is whether I'll live that long, this wine certainly will.

Burg Dinner (CA and France--Served Blind!) (Murray Casa): This was Wet Rock's ringer. Not chardonnay but muscadet. Good core of pear, spicy and present, energetic and minerally. Very nice. I scored this as my #3 wine. The group took a liking to it, as it got 8 votes but nothing for 1st place. 14 total points and finished in 4th place. Would have done better, I suspect, but it just was an unfair fight with the two Pulignys of the flight.

6/29/10: Bright nose. Sea shells. Nice body. Actually shows some fatness (for Muscadet, at least) Delicious stuff. It's really difficult to buy into $60 grand cru Chablis when stuff like this is available for a quarter of the price. This is world class. 89-91
