4th bottle of 6, and probably the best yet with notable balance and elegance. Best after about an hour of air, then holding well through the last glass on the second night. Equally good on its own and with pork tenderloin one night, spaghetti and meatballs another. Early to middle drinking window based on this bottle, with many more years of fine drinking to come. 94-95+ if scoring

big bold red; a bit more blocky and less nuanced for a wine with this much age on it; but a very well made super tuscan that still has good fruit, good acidity and probably not going to get a lot better

Hamilton Blind Group: [Tasted Double Blind] This pours medium ruby, not really any bricking to speak of. The nose is lightly expressive with modest complexity. Aromas are of fresh cut pine, ripe plum, ripe blackberry, dark cherry, gravel, green pine needles, and violets . The palate enters on ripe plum and dark cherry turning to quite a structured mid-palate. Medium plus tannin that feels quite oak driven, with medium minus acid. The finish closes on bitter fennel seed, some new oak, and plum. The alcohol pokes out a tad on the finish indicating somewhere around 14% or more. Overall the finish gets clipped by bitterness and astringency. My guess on this was a modern, over extracted, and over oaked 2005 or 2006 Bordeaux, perhaps St Emilion fitting this mold most cleanly. I was surprised and disappointed on reveal to see the 2007 Saffredi which I've had twice before. In my early wine drinking days a decade ago loving this, and not writing a note about 4 years back where I believe I found it difficult but with redeeming characteristics. In this tasting I wasn't a fan. I think my palate shifted since those early days.

3rd of 6 from a purchase a bit over a year ago. Generally similar notes to my 6/22 TN, with the wine still taking 2.5-3 hours on night 1 to come to its best point, then balling back up again on night 2 and needing another hour of air to get to optimal drinking. Somewhat unusual fruit profile, both in terms of type—a strong fig note—and qualities, with an almost bruised, baked quality most similar among wine I’ve tasted in the past year to an ‘08 Spottswoode Cab. While some of this could be due to the warm year, there’s a feeling here that this may still not have completely settled down—some wines never do—and if anything, it may not have hit its optimal drinking window yet. There’s reason to believe this, as its Tuscan neighbors, in price as well as geography, a ‘07 La Massa GP and an ‘08 Tua Rita Giusto Notri, that I bought in quantity and have been slowly going through, continue to drink youthfully as well. At this wine’s best, it certainly is really good now, maybe just a bit better with red sauce pasta than sipping on its own. Perhaps not quite where I graded the prior bottle, but close, and if the wines can be a bit fickle, can’t I as well? 93-94+ if scoring

Still a youthful wine. Dark color, dark berry driven nose. Bouquet shows Maremma at its best: dark fruit, black cherries, figs, strong coffee: espresso notes, dark chocolate, some tobacco. Strong but fine tannins in the long and harmonious finish indicate further development in the years to come. And Power. Drinking window in early stages. Potential to reach a higher ranking.

Decanted 2 hours. Drank on our wedding anniversary with beef tenderloin, roasted sweet potatoes, and green beans. Perfect ruby color. The aroma was deep and luscious, with dark chocolate being the most prominent aroma, but also that amazing smell I sometimes get from great California cabernet. The flavors were dark fruit and dark chocolate, with a heavy presence on the palate. I would buy more and decant longer.

This Saffredi hits the spot! In its optimal drinking point, fig, plum, prune, dried black fruit, blackcurrant, tobacco, cedar, cassis, medium to full body, velvety long finish.

A classic. Bdx with its best face from Tuscany? Or a *pft* overpolished wine with a total absence of personality? Easy to drink, but that's hardly a quality marker. Our taste: an uninteresting wine that does not inspire new acquaintances.
First of 6 ($74@) from a recent auction purchase. On the very redolent nose and slightly less intense palate, rich dark berries, black cherries, plums, figs, incense, tobacco, pencil shavings graphite, rose petals, dark roast coffee, and starting on the second night, dark chocolate. Deep, dark purple with slight browning, medium to full bodied, thick legs. Intense acidity on the pour which integrated with air, medium+ tannins, no heat, but on the first night, a stewed quality to the fruit which gave the wine just a touch of booziness. Great complexity, VG++ persistence and intensity. Back from Douro Valley, Rioja and Bordeaux, on CA soil, I return to my favorite wine country (still shaking my head that I was in a neighboring country and didn’t stop by!), Tuscany, this time for a primarily CS-merlot IGT. Interestingly, unlike many of the IGTs (I’ve taken a vow not to use the term “Super Tuscan” unless it jeopardizes my life or those of my loved ones), this one actually feels more like BDX, or more accurately, BDX as I idealize it (Suckling has called the ‘12 of this bottling the Italian Lafitte, but it’s unclear if I could tell a Lafitte from Jean Lafitte) with none of the typical Tuscan terroir notes I typically adore. This wine went through 3 distinct stages, maybe even 3 and a half: right out of the bottle, when the acidity was pushing everything else around, after about 2.5 hours of air, when the secondary notes came out fully and everything balanced, night 2, when the stewiness vanished, and the wine became almost achingly elegant, then a last glass on night 3, when the wine lost just a touch of focus, perhaps because I hadn’t drained the prodigious sediment. This wine tastes early drinking window to me, and although it’s not clear it will entirely lose the slightly stewed quality—blame it on the hot year—it might, and the structure and fruit are all there for a long, happy future, whether there’s incremental improvement or not. Unlike many of its Tuscan compadres, this shines equally as a standalone as with food, in this case, on the different nights, a diversity of roast chicken, grilled burgers and red sauce pasta. At its best moments on night 2, this touched 95, and while I’m not always so generous, that’s what I’m scoring it, but if you, or at least if I had, PnP’d it, it won’t be close to this. My price was probably pretty close to the release price—maybe even a bit above—but it’s now in the $100+ area. I’m not sure that’s wrong, certainly not when compared to BDX and CA peers at that point, but even with Argentiera, Grattamaco and Guado, all CS dominant Tuscan IGTs from a bit under to a bit above the century mark. I sometimes worry I sound too much a flak for the Italian, and in particular, Tuscan, wine industry, but my chips are all in these guys consistently making among the finest, and the best, qpr wines anywhere, full stop. 94-95
Well my friend Harry usual Xmas party of around 70 people coming in and out was reduced to a small dinner party of vaccinated people who have had their booster shot. I supplied two magnums of wine for the festivities. This and a 2006 Dunn. I opened both three hours before dinner. This was served with the first two courses. The nose is fruit and hints of mocha. The palate is berry, plum, tobacco and chocolate. The finish is long and smooth.

Very open and expressive. There was baked blackberry and blueberry , chocolate lava cake, and a hint of mint. The acidity was completely balanced and the tannins were like velvet. The finish went on for minutes.
I tasted this again 2 days after being recorked. To my surprise, I found it to be better on the second round. It had more cherry and less baked fruit. I initially gave this a 91 but upgraded it to a 93 after the second tasting. The tannins were also more silky and clean.

Another Magnum last night at dinner and this vintage was just as good as 2006 if not better. Big deep ruby color with complexity that goes far beyond expectations. Rich in deep dark berries that linger on the palate, with velvety rich deep tannins makes this one of my favorite wines I've had this year.

Excellent. Blackberry, dark cherry, some dark chocolate, some secondary notes, but overall more fruit driven. Not new world though and well balanced and dense with a very long finish. A great wine in a good drinking window. I’d recommend drinking it now through the next three years

Beautiful and elegant. Plum, cherry, Asian spices, some anise, tobacco on the nose. Medium bodied with medium tannins that create a smooth long finish. Good acidity. Lots of cherry, raspberry, brighter red fruit, black licorice in the mouthful. Snappy acidic finish with the tannins. This is likely at its peak. Really enjoyed this.

Continue to show well. It’s really best upon first opening with fantastic mocha, graphite and umami savoury tone. Funny thing is it did not really improve and shut down after that.

Clear medium/deep ruby with a garnet rim; clean medium plus nose of cracked fall leaves, dried cassis, dried plums, dried red cherries, vanilla and cigar box; dry; medium plus acidity; medium plus tannins; high alcohol; medium body; medium plus flavour intensity; palate is slightly tarter than nose with addition of black licorice; medium plus finish; drink now - pretty close to its peak - but will still be enjoyable for a few more years; beautiful and elegant but still edgy

Ripe plums, liquorice, mint leaves, violets, flowers bouquet - fantastic. Tasted dark fruits, mint leaves, violets, figs, with tertiaries of Black Forest cake and dark mint chocolate. Lengthy minty finish, with tinges of pencil shavings. Full bodied. Slightly strong on the alcohol but great with food. This is in its drinking window but I reckon this should hit its peak window in 1 more year or so. Great stuff.

Brought to Rosalie's Cucina. This wine has everything -- luscious fruit, great structure (both acidic and tannic), and is starting to show some subtle secondaries. It was very enjoyable with Rosalie's Braciole, and we both enjoyed the wine very much. That said, I think this can get substantially better with age. The tannins still have quite a bit of grip, and I think this will smooth out and gain complexity before the fruit fades. Will hang onto my remaining bottle for a few more years. This has new world intensity but with an italian sensibility. Great producer.

Tasted blind. Intense, powerful nose of serrano pepper, smoke, blackberries, and tea. Damn. Blackberries and graphite create a deep slide into spicy and complex Cabernet (?) greatness. Such a long, harmonious palate. This is a serious wine, and seems like it has a long life ahead of it. Bordeaux? My WOTN.

My second last bottle. Smell of forest floor, charcoal (as noted by others). Tannins still present, but well integrated on the side of a cheese plate. Full mid-palate, not very long, without being a fruit bomb. Good balance with some acidity.

beautiful sangio expression... this is going to sound odd after giving it a 93 rating, but it under-delivered on the promise of the bouquet... one of the most amazing bouquets i've ever experienced and set the bar so high, that as good as it was, dare i say, nearly a let down... but, it went great with a variety of dishes across duck/rabbit/steak/fish/cheese; got about 15 mins slow ox in bottle, and another 30 in the glass before diving in.
lovely!!

Deep purple. Charcoal, blueberries, and cassis. The oak is becoming prominent, but nicely integrated. A well balanced wine, although the tannins could have more time to resolve. Extraordinarily long finish; 60+ seconds.

Really nice wine. Lots of red fruit on the nose, a bit candied, and with some very subtle herbal notes. One the palate, again loads of fruit, more red than black. These are new world varietals, but the wine has an Italian sensibility to it. Good acidity gives it lift and keeps it from being heavy. There are still plenty of fine tannins here suggesting a long life ahead, but this is certainly approachable now. K really liked this a lot. Would buy more but the price has about doubled from what I paid.

I have followed this wine over several years. It has now lost some of its fat from its primary stage, and has developed more meaty character with notes of beef, spices, and leather, while retaining a distinct coffee note on the nose. Palate is balanced and nicely fleshed out, tannins are now more pronounced as the fruit has resided a bit. It is probably on its maturity plateau where it will stay for 4-5 years i think. Personally, i liked it slightly more in its youth as despite being ripe and lush, it retained elegance and balance and was just plainly wonderful. Still a lovely wine

Quite simply an amazing wine, and admittedly one of my preferred. Opulent and the tannins are perfectly integrated, I see no reason to hold, but there is still plenty of life ahead. There is hardly a better way to celebrate the end of the year!

Full, deep, ruby-violet color. Secondary and tight on the nose- with aromas of spring flowers, minerality & soil, currants and wild herbs. Very refined, focused and pure on the palate- showing fresh currant and blackberry fruit, with secondary tea, olive, cedar and floral depth. Opens with great intensity of the fruit, and moves to a dense, layered and complex mid-palate. Medium acid, fine gripping tannins, silky mouthfeel, and a dry, full finish. Quite excellent. Drink/hold.

Hard to tell if this was a Tuscan wine ... it just does not have much of those Tuscan markers.
Cork was soaked through, bit of seepage from the bottle so I decided to pop and see where it was. I was initially thinking maybe a return to the LCBO for some store credit might be in order. Smelled okay so I decanted some to let sit for a half hour or so and open up.
Fabulous wine. Wow. Still a dark purple core to the wine, dull sheen. No sediment to speak of. The aromas present lots of florals, some sweet cassis, a bit of yeasty bread dough, milk chocolate and some charcoal.
Overall a full bodied wine, but not heavy or sappy. I would call this a low acidity, and the wine has grainy tannins that come to the forefront on the finish. Real nice berry and cassis fruit mixed with vanilla. A touch of tea, truffles , minerality and herbs on a nice long finish. Mouthfilling but not jammy or overdone. A plush and creamy and spice filled (some nutmeg, cloves) mid-palate. A beautiful wine.

color: deep garnet red Nose: Anise, plum, herbs Taste: upfront flavor of coffee, mocha, plum and black cherry. Lingering behind was anise, dried herbs and an almost floral finish
This wine is singing right now, but I think it has lots more time to go. It is dense and rich with a full round mouthfeel, yet doesn't feel chewy. Completely in balance. A nice long, smooth polished finish. This is just wonderful - I have three more bottles and look forward to pacing them out over the next few years.

Keeping very well, in fact shows quite similar to 2½ years ago. I do very much like this version of a super tuscan. It is a sappy and ripe with roasted coffee notes, blackberry, raspberry, still elegant with a refined minerality and restraint in its fruit expression. Pure, and a great example that new oak treatment done in moderation can create a wonderful full bodied ripe but elegant wine. Finishes long and lingers for a while. One of those wines that drinks extremely well and you end of finishing it earlier than anticipated!

Decanted for 3 hours and consumed most over the next 2. Dark fruit with medium to high acidity with fine tannins. This opened somewhat during dinner but was never as good as I had hoped being my first bottle of Saffredi. Left about 6-8 oz in a small bottle in the fridge till the next night. On the second night the balance and depth was what I originally had expected. Wait 2-3 years before the next bottle.

Spavento iniziale. Il tappo prometteva TAPPO. E invece no. vino perfetto.

Retailer tasting: I am very much impressed about this wine and I made just a few descriptive notes: Beautiful ripe dark forest fruits, sweet spices and beautiful luxurious oak. Soft tannin and a great, refined and complex wine already. Harmonious all over. I scored it 94+ and that might be even too low when the wine gets some more age.

Tried the first one of this vintage. Super surprise compared to previous vintages I have. Explodes into a gustatory experience. One can wrap the head around the glass with dark berry and forest soil smells. Tannins already well integrated into a huge mouthfilling body. Loooooong aftertaste! Had it with ricotta-spinach filled pasta on parmigiano sauce, and with a cheese plate. Should evolve gracefully for many years to come. Will try again in 2014!

Bright ruby color. Wonderfull hedonistic nose of black forest fruit, raspberry coulis, grilled meat, and roasted espresso beans. Palate is full bodied with dark fruits delivered very sharply, but it has not yet fleshed out completely. It is not overly extracted, nor overly oaked, but shows great backbone and bright acidity which in total, and in combination with the primary fruit, expresses balance and fiminine elegance, as well as raw power. The right amount of everything, all is in order here!! It finishes long and beautiful, with herbs, charred meat and coffee, lingering a long time on the palate. World class quality and in a different league than your average super tuscan. It is approachable now, (not to mention delicious) but it will improve and flesh out within the next few years and develop more secondary nuances as well, it is probably best from 2015+

Showing well for a young wine. Just not distinctive for the price. Mostly Cabernet fruit with plummy, and herb character. Tannin is quite smooth and certainly not as pronounced as the 04 around same stage of development. Vanilla and some spice to finish off. Some sign of heat damage with depressed capsule and soaked cork.

Fabulous wine. Gorgeous nose of perfectly ripe (not overripe) dark berry fruit, leather, herbs, truffles, undergrowth. Wreaks of very high quality french oak. Lots of spice, charcoal and vanilla. Palate is plush and delicious with moderate tannins and moderate to low acidity. I don't find much in the way of classic tuscan character in this wine, but I don't care because it is so delicious. The wine was opened 4 hours before consuming so air likely helped. The cork was stained more than half way up so there were questions about it had become more advanced due to storage (by LCBO?).

Intensely underwhelming.
A classic. Bdx with its best face from Tuscany?
Or a *pft* overpolished wine with a total absence of personality? Easy to drink, but that's hardly a quality marker.
Our taste: an uninteresting wine that does not inspire new acquaintances.
Maybe better suited for those who prefer Bgn?
Like a well made $15 no-name-Bdx.

Lengthy minty finish, with tinges of pencil shavings. Full bodied. Slightly strong on the alcohol but great with food. Great producer.

beautiful sangio expression... this is going to sound odd after giving it a 93 rating, but it under-delivered on the promise of the bouquet... one of the most amazing bouquets i've ever experienced and set the bar so high, that as good as it was, dare i say, nearly a let down... but, it went great with a variety of dishes across duck/rabbit/steak/fish/cheese; got about 15 mins slow ox in bottle, and another 30 in the glass before diving in.
lovely!!

This wine is singing right now, but I think it has lots more time to go. It is dense and rich with a full round mouthfeel, yet doesn't feel chewy. Completely in balance.

Spavento iniziale. Il tappo prometteva TAPPO. E invece no. vino perfetto.

Had it with ricotta-spinach filled pasta on parmigiano sauce, and with a cheese plate. Should evolve gracefully for many years to come. Will try again in 2014!

Soft and mellow with hints of cocoa and black fruits this wine is nevertheless very focused. Great tannins belie the gentle start and the overall mouthfeel is huge and very satisfying great wine.

Consistent with previous notes. Drinks beautifully now and continues to improve with plenty of upside potential.

NEEDS a very healthy decant. Young but with plenty of air, just beautiful. 1st hour = flat, 5 hours = great. Wonderful floral compaonents with layers of subtle fruit. I hint of coffee and some earth. Really promising future.

Waaaaaay too young. Not sure I can rate this wine. But in the future it might have probably class and elegance (fruit?). But now - its impossible.

Bone dry. Classy structure but not yielding much. Needs more air I suspect.

Oak and leather on the nose. Voluptuous body of blackberries and other dark fruits. Still tannic, but enjoyable now. Will age gracefully. I decanted it for 1 hour before drinking. It could use 2 hours easily. Excellent wine.

Excellent wine, opened a bit too soon but really wanted to try it. Decanted for 2 hours. Young and fresh with a big nose of dark fruit and cherry. Already well integrated with perfect tannins; smoke, spice, herbs and a nice long finnish. Highly recommended!

Opened at least 5 years too soon, but wanted to experiment. Opened for an hour, decanted and venturi'd. As others noted, distinct mocha on the nose, very dense, thick wine with strong but fine tannins. More enjoyable on day 2.
