T's 45th Birthday (Søllerød Kro): From magnum. Refined and precise wine with lots of drinking pleasure. It has refined light cherry and strawberry fruit and a touch of wet leaves. But, it does present itself as a very young wine still. There is a touch of For me, it lacked a bit of intensity but overall, it was a great wine!

Enjoyed at Otto e Mezzo. Small glass generously shared. Bottle already previously opened.
This was better than I thought it'd be - drinking very well, Mugnier charm, clearly excellent condition bottle. Red fruits, delicate, none of that NSG 'rusticity' at all. Almost a hint of Vosne Spice, which would probably fool me if I was tasting this blind.
This is probably at peak now and am very glad to enjoy this, even though it feels like it will hold for many years at this level assuming good provenance and storage. Thanks to JR for sharing!

Still fairly rich, concentrated and primary though with the deft touch of Mugnier that gives it refinement and lift. True to NSG with a meaty, funky note throughout that adds interest. Still 3-5 years from peak drinking, but approachable now.

Still surprisingly young for 14 years. From the bottle it was all dark fruits on the nose, almost Bordeaux ish given the blackcurrants and cherries. Definitely got better with air but remains youthful. Both unfiltered and unfined, very cloudy and dark in the glass. A lush mouthfeel

Clos de la Marechale Vertical (Decatur, GA): Cloudy maroon with crimson rim; some Band-Aid Bretty funk on the nose, riper fruit, medicinal, almost seems like Grenache, a nice wine but not what I'm looking for in red Burgundy, warm year profile mars this wine as it did the Chambolle Musigny tasted months earlier.

Pop and pour. A touch under 5 years since my last btl, and unlike many other 09s this shows basically no evolution. On the nose: red fruit, hard candy, pomegranate. On the palate: good acidity, thick red fruit, a touch hard like an 05.and serious tannin on the finish. Ignore for a while.

Fifth course: served with “Guinea hen duo” with a very rich sauce. The fine grained tannins cut the dish’s richness. Real finesse and seeming delicacy with the game bird. 92+

Rich and ripe and long, and drinking quite well right now. It's a bit foursquare but it's a very satisfying Burg by any estimation. The current pricing of Mugnier is going a bit nutty so I'm not convinced this is worth the current tariff.

I thought this bottle brought by a friend was a tad heat damaged, and our somm agreed after a taste. Thankfully the only consequence is that it tasted more mature than expected. It was super aromatic with strong but aged fruit. What kept me coming back for more, though, was this deftly controlled nip of VA on the nose—it jumped out of the glass so quickly that you weren’t even sure it was there. Excellent wine in spite of its questionable storage.

Bottle breathed for 3 hours. A little tight and reticent and needed some time in glass to get much better. Opened up to cherries, rose and spices with some rustic flavours. Palate has good minerality along with tart red cherries, raspberries and jasmine tea. Multi-layered structure showing lovely balance and youthfulness. Finish elegant with medium acidity and medium tannins. A touch young for me at this moment, I will definitely keep the remaining of my case away for another 3 to 5 years before revisiting!

Generous tasting sample from a friend. Very elegant nose with a healthy dose of oak that made me think Vosne at first, but with air the meatiness and rusticity of the wine came through so I thought that it was a lighter and more elegant Gevrey grand cru. A little more advanced than I expected for a 2009 with some bricking, but a very finely poised wine.

2019 Visit to Cromwell (Central Otago, NZ): Blair’s wine served double blind. Deep, dark colour. A spicy bouquet of blackberries, blackcurrants and dark cherries, dried herbs, earth and notes of dark florals. On palate, earthy, meaty and savoury. Sous bois and dark fruited, with no hint of fruit sweetness. Some lifted, whole bunch herbal notes. Big boned, serious structure and tannins. Concentrated with iron ore at its core. If possible, hold for 5 – 10+ years. 92+.

Wow, utterly impressive juice with great depth of cherry fruit and minerals. Really seems to be opening up now with more development to come for sure and it's just classic Burgundy in the making. I often dismiss this wine in its youth due to it's inherently lean flavor profile but it's a good match for the ripe '09 vintage which brings out the wine's true personality. 93+

Sam's 60th Birthday (The Krengels - Bannockburn IL): Small glass, brief note. A wine I have had so many times, this is rich and fun like so many 2009s, even if not as perfectly harmonious as the best of previous bottles. This wine will hold well for a long time.

Deep dark black fruits with bramble and spice. Long finish. This is a bigger wine as to be expected from the vintage, but Mugnier keeps it in balance. Starting to open up but no bricking or signs of decline. I'm interested to see what this does over the next decade.

NSG 1er Cru South (Chicago, IL): Single blind and readily identifiable as the 2009 given its ripe, dark and brooding character. Black cherry and earth tones on the nose. Palate is bigger, dense with brooding, tense structure. Along with the 2005, the most substantial of all vintages tasted, and I like the potential here better than the 2005 as the structure seems more amicable. Upside from here.

I think this was a touch advanced (not you too red burgundy!!), as it was definitely showing a bit more secondary notes than I’d expect, with just a hint of tomato. A nice bottle, but I suspect a touch of heat damage; this was far fresher out of magnum in the summer.

had over two nights... lots of other notes say it well... this wine was enjoyable -- for me -- but also very very NSG / rustic, fruit in the back seat (and red?), lots of structure and spice / edge / acidity / etc... I like that but would call this over the top structure-wise for a majority of red burg fans, and probably for nearly all Cali pinot fans (which I am not, with a small # of exceptions)

From magnum, not blind. Decanted for a couple of hours, this is definitely on the broader side for Mugnier, but it's remarkable what he can do with the southern end of Nuits St. George as the purity of fruit is lovely. This will never have the deft touch of his Chambolle, but it's a lovely wine and remains a great "value" in Burgundy, which is usually open fairly young. This was also pretty good the following day.

Freddy's 2009 Clos de lɒ Maréchale shows that solar vintage imprint with ripe red & black cherry dominating a nose that also shows coffee and spice notes. Fairly austere palate, drying tannins, soil flavors. Consistent with my last bottle two years hence, this is not my favorite vintage of this usually bright and elegant wine.

Absolutely in the zone right now - this is open and transparent. This doesn't quite have the aromatic lift of Mugnier's Chambolle, but it's lovely red fruit, with good structure and mostly resolved tannins. Nice long finish as well. There's some secondary development, but this is still all about the fruit. Again, this doesn't quite have the ethereal feel of Mugnier's Chambolle, but it comes quite close.

Aged, amber-red with nice colour concentration. This bottle is much more evolved than when last tasted a year ago. Aged and mature aromas of dried prunes, nuts and a spicey tone reminiscent of thyme and menthe. Some smokey tones emerges after a while. Medium bodied, sweet fruit (prunes and black cherries) combined with nuts and dry wood/warm earth. Finish is quite dry with rustic tannins and a clear hint of warmth (alcohol). Medium length. Struggles to keep up with a grilled chicken. This is a good wine, but far from what one should expect from this producer (and at this price).
Moden frukt i munn. Kraftig vin. Fyldig og rik. 14 %, som merkes noe. Pen lengde. God å drikke nå, men ingen hast.

Wow. Drinking window is way off. Much more resolved than would be expected for the vineyard and age. Dark color, more homogenous solids in the bottle than would be expected. Still nice & rich, but lacks acid and focus to age any further. Suspect they picked later than ideal. Careful with the 2009's, test early to see what to expect. I will drink my other 5 in the next 12 months as I don't see much upside.

From a vertical of Mugnier's Marechal 2004 to 2016. Dark, almost paque in colour, not very typical of PN. Doesn't give much on the nose, but after some minutes in the glass weak tones of dark forest berries (blackberries) and dark cherries emerge together with a smokey tone. Full bodied, but a heavy load of quite dry tannins quickly sets in and gives an almost brutal impression. The fruit is sweet, acidity is quite low, while the tannins are clearly on the dry side. The aftertaste is almost bitter, but still the fruit manages to balance it somehow. This is similar to several other 09s I have drunk, reflecting the scorching heat of the vintage. Not very typical NSG, nor PN, and far from elegant.

This is now hitting its full stride and albeit it has a lot more life at this level we have no regrets opening this. Very classy wine, classical in a way, textbook Burgundian feel. Light dark fruits, soft spicy edge, smoky at times. Starting to show an earthy touch but the wine is really delicious at this stage with a slight more richness and brightness on the fruit. Very solid 92-93

In a 09/13/15 lineup, with the 09/13 served blind. The 09 was a bit cloudy and not at all in a 2009 fashion, with earthy fruits that were a bit subdued. I was guessing something from the 90s. In comparison the '13 was overtly fruity and almost new world like. A really weird juxtaposition where you'd expect the '09 to show more fruit forward. Anyway, on it's own the '09 was nice enough with good complexity and depth. This bottle showed advanced, and not what I'd peg as typical.

Followed over about 3 hours. A bit rustic and, as others have noted, the finish was somewhat drying. Overall a good, but not great, bottle. My only bottle but if I had another I'd hold 2-3 years to see where this goes.

Fairly ripe but fresh nose of red berry alongside menthol and spice. Contra some of the other reviews here, to my palate this is a classic Clos de la Maréchale, worse for the warm vintage.

We worried this would be too young but 10 minutes in the glass all that went away. Granted it is on the young side and depending on ones love with Burgundy this could be too early but definitely not a bad call to open one at this stage. Very much the burgundy on the nose, light dark fruit, touch spicy and even an earthy touch. Open and very welcoming on the nose for sure. On the palate it was actually soft, round and a lot silkier on the tannin than we expected. Good 2009 fruit, darker at times. Could use some more length but very happy with it and a solid 92-93

Moderate black fruit with fun spice. Good weight and length, but not as bright as I'd prefer for a 2009. Slightly drying finish. Not as fresh as another bottle from a few weeks ago. 87 points tonight, an off bottle?
I don't know why I opened this, but I shouldn't have. Decanted..notes from 1 hr open. Amazingly primary right now, with loads of crunchy and candied red fruit, a touch of animal, and lots of extraction. On the palate, great texture, with loads of dark red fruit, great acid, some stemmy notes and a hint of oak influence. Grainy tannin on the finish. Note to self: don't touch another bottle for at least 5 more years.

Wines tasted during Super Bowl LII (Chez Kailin): From magnum, pop n' pour. Good richness and roundness with no signs of overt ripeness. Structure is well-integrated and there are no hard edges here. Very smooth. Not all that complex at this stage but modest spice and earth notes add interest. Lots to like here with a forward wine in a classical frame.

Mid week Burgs with Paul at Trade Kitchen (Trade Kitchen, Wellington): Very deep, dark colour. Blackberries, dark plums and other dark fruit, with sous bois, soil and something feral and meaty on bouquet. In the mouth, black fruit, mushrooms, charcoaled game meats and iron. A big tannic structure, with real grip on the back palate, a little drying on the finish. For a 2009, I was surprised that this Mugnier was drinking so well on the night, but it would reward 5-10+ more years in the cellar, I'd say.

Ooooh, this is going to be quite a wine in a few years. Right now it is deep, meaty and still sitting on the fruit although there is enough tannins and acidity poking through at the moment to make this very approachable. Black fruit underpinned by firm tannins with notes of mushrooms and dark cherries peeking through.

Deep red With amber tones. Rather plummy nose With hints of Cherry, slightly earthy. Tannic and full bodied, fine grained tannins, fruit all the way, slightly hot finish. Medium lengt With a slight warmness (alcohol) in the finish. Very good wine, but not the most elegant burgndy. Probably classic Nuits With it's somewhat rustic tones.

Some herby forest floor on the nose, with tannins that revealed the NSG origins of this wine in comparison to the Dujac Chambolle poured alongside. Good but outclassed on this night. 89-90 at this juncture but I expect it will be lovely in time.

Although a good wine, I was still disappointed since the '11 had blown my hair back. And '09 is meant to be a better vintage. On the nose great aromas of roses, strawberry, earth, chalk. But on the taste the tannins were a bit rough, and as the wine got air rather than coming together it rather became a bit disjointed - becoming more rustic. Wasn't expecting that after the elegant and razor sharp '11.

Nuits St. Georges Tasting (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Tasting, brief note. Ripe black fruit with very good density. Lots of spice. Tasted single blind in a mixed new/old world flight. The most closed in wine of the flight. The nose requires much coaxing to yield black cherry, herbs, florals and a touch of spice. Wow, this is quite concentrated and structured on the palate. More hard than generous, but there's a slew of potential that is lurking below the surface. 2-3 points of upside if potential materializes with time.

The Rotating Dinners, I.5: Blinds from Around the World (Chicago, IL): Served double blind in a flight of pinot noir. This showed a massive tannic structure and a huge amount of extracted fruit that seemed quite new world to me (though I said that if this was a Burgundy, it must be a 2009). Lots of brown spice, but what's unbearable is that really prickly bit of alcohol on the back end. I was quite disappointed to see the label on the bottle.

Pretty shutdown right now. Shows the vintage character with ripe blueish Pinot fruit that has a creamy quality, but it also shows some Nuits character with a meaty savory edge. Not very expressive, the fruit is hiding behind lots of very fine tannin. Needs time.

(at Lafayette – NYC) This was a wonderful wine. I thought it would be nice but over-delivered. Great fruit purity. Nice density. 14% A very good NSG monopole, just a bit too expensive for a NSG though. Darker red (a bit dull). Iron, darker cherry and berry as well as meaty and earthy. Powerful on the palate, while this is still quite fine, it doesn't show the finesse and elegance one found in Mugnier Chambolle. Good flavors intensity with ripe firm tannin but lacks a bit of acidity for the lift. Good length.

Nose says Pinot Noir and oak, but palate says brutally tannic monster reminiscent of a young Bordeaux.Highly extracted, but this is a 2009. A little cheese allows one to appreciate the copious fruit hidden behind the tannins. Revisit this wine in five years or so, and add two or three more points. Needs time!

Central NJ CT Offline (Mistral - 66 Witherspoon St in Princeton): This really brought the fluke to life. 2009ish in a good way. I think this year in Burgundy has something for all red wine drinkers... At any rate, it is juicy, purply, quaffable- even at this young age; there is added mineral, earth, and generally tasty but dark perceptions.

Spicy. Reasonable tannin still though there's some weight to the wine to me. It has strength. Tastes a little sour and sharp. I think this needs a reasonable amount of time to mellow. Dark fruit. It'll be great in 5 years

Fine Vines Fall 2014 Portfolio Tasting: Tasting, brief note. This bottle came across as slightly reduced, which was clearly dissipating with aeration. At 4hrs there is still a hint of alcohol on the nose. The fruit profile is black cherry and merde up front, prevalent acidity, stemmy mid palate, gritty finish with spicy cherry and strawberry. Fun to follow but too young. Needs more time to integrate the oak and acidity. Not sure if there is enough fruit to keep up with it though. As this was my only bottle I will never know for sure.
Expressive Pinot nose leads you into a well balanced palate somewhat dominated by stemmy tannins. Good structure portends a long life ahead. Long finish. Significant upside. No hurry to drink up. Shows no ill affects from the hot summer.

This surprised me because, being a JF Mugnier wine, I didn't bother with my usual alcohol level check, before ordering. As soon as I tasted the big, dark, dense, warm fruits, I saw it was 14%. The oak however was fine and well balanced as expected. Suggest cellaring for a few years but I wonder about this fruit. Not really my style - we didn't even finish the bottle. Admittedly we were disappointed, particularly after being spoiled with a beautiful bottle of 2008 JF Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees the other night ...

I've been drinking through my 375's of the 08 Marechale, but this was my first 09 (also from 375). Much bigger, much more of a monster, but less enjoyable at this point. Unlike some other 09's which allow an early taste, this needs to be buried in the cellar.

I was anxious to put this wine into the tasting, having tasted the 08, 09 and 10 at the domaine a couple of months ago. At that time, the 09 was certainly the biggest and most structured of the group. This is classic NSG. Big structure, muscular with dark fruits, prominent grippy tannins, yet enough fruit to nicely balance, and a very nice persistent finish. This wine needs lots of time…Drink the 08 and 10 before considering this one.

This wine is a sweet black cherry that is quite creamy of mouthfeel. It's stone underpins the sweetness with some rocky, cool notes and it's skin fills in the structural gaps where the acid has gone walkabout. It is a good wine and quite attractive, more handsome than pretty with a touch of Nuits masculinity.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Dense black fruit on the nose with some ripe and candied character. A bit more subtle on the palate, still ripe, but with a bit of red cherry coming through middle to finish. Nicely structured, a bit firm today. All the raw materials seem quite good but I'd give this a few years to better integrate.

Had at Knightsbridge in Northbrook, IL, with several other 2009 burgundies. What a great surprise, comparing favorably with Grand Cru. Dense, soft tannins, great nose, drinking amazing now, but will hold for years (if the 69 Favielay Marechale any indication, 30-40+ years).

Fine Vines Fall Grand Tasting (OneSixtyBlue, Chicago IL): nose: there's a dark red fruit core underneath a rustic backdrop with tones of dark red fruits, earth tones, brown spices and dark red cherries. Good depth, but it is holding back a bit on the nose.
taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity and some sneaky tannins. There's a nice underlying structure with tones of dark red fruits, earth tones and dark red cherries.
overall: this needs some time to shed the fat. There is a riper quality to it due to the vintage, but this is still very much a NSG. This could use at least another 5-8 years and drink for a long time.

I am going to be out of the norm on this bottling. Have purchased every CdM from Mugnier since 2003, generally in decent quantities. I own many, many Mugnier wines from multiple vintages. Was in Burgundy recently and saw this at a great wine shop in Nuits and decided to buy a 375 ML to see what this is like as I have not seen it in my local market as of yet. Not a fan. Smelled and tasted like a cross between modern Amarone and California Pinot Noir. Very, very ripe with nearly Port like qualities to it. Certainly not a mishandled bottle as the shop is beyond reproach and only a few miles from the domaine. I can see it being popular. It is deep, very rich with lots of dark fruited flavor to it. I found it ponderous, heavy and not very interesting. A 2009 Domaine de Bellene Nuits St. George village wine absolutely was the better of the 2 wines. I can't see this going anywhere amazing. I probably will pick up a couple of bottles in hopes that this was a mis-fire rather than a truly representative example. No score but THIS particular bottle I would go with something around 82.

Fine Vines - New Burgundy Releases (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Wine tasting. Elegant mostly red fruit on nose with spice in background. Palate shows a balance of more ripe black and red fruit, very nicely balanced and structured. I think I say almost the same thing every year - the newest vintage is the best vintage yet of Mugnier Marechale.

France 2011 - Côte d'Or; 7/8/2011-7/13/2011 (Beaune): Tasted at the Domaine. Red and black cherries aromas with hints of earth. This is rounder in the mouth with richer flavours, soft but fine tannins and decent acidity. Doesn’t have the freshness or vibrancy that the ‘08 has. Compared to the 2010 barrel sample this has a warmer, darker and riper profile. Different but yummy and will age. Very good. 89+

J-F Mugnier Cellar Visit and Tasting (Chambolle-Musigny): Tasting at Domaine. Black fruit with an intense lush, sweet character to it. Powerful and large scaled wine, this is very impressive for its level and price where I expect it will sell. To date, Mugnier's Clos de la Marechale have mostly been wines easily enjoyed when young, and while I think this 2009 has so much primary fruit so can be enjoyed in 2012 or 2013, it will really benefit from time in the cellar. I expect to stash away a case.

Very intense palate, earthy and brooding with cherry liquor and plummy fruit. Extremely savory; this is predominated by dark fruit.
Intensely tannic but enough acidity to balance. Very, very good, long finish.

No signs of bottle age in the glass (or in general).
Dark cherries, blackberries, licorice, rose. Very nice nose.
A little more muted on the palate with some greenish aromas, unripe raspberries, tea. Medium tannins, quite rustic still. Nice minerality.
Unbelievably young.
Hold.

From magnum, not blind. Decanted for a couple of hours, this is definitely on the broader side for Mugnier, but it's remarkable what he can do with the southern end of Nuits St. George as the purity of fruit is lovely.

In comparison the '13 was overtly fruity and almost new world like. A really weird juxtaposition where you'd expect the '09 to show more fruit forward.

For a 2009, I was surprised that this Mugnier was drinking so well on the night, but it would reward 5-10+ more years in the cellar, I'd say.

An alright wine but didn't feel like it was "together" yet, or maybe won't. Not as smooth as one would like from a $100 Burgundy of 09.

More structure than usual, but clearly also with the substance to take advantage of that structure. My favorite of the 4 vintages of Marechale tasted today, even if not yet at its peak.

Needs time.

A very good NSG monopole, just a bit too expensive for a NSG though.

Drank from 0.375 bottle with a rich a decadent Coq au Vin. Very pretty aromatics of dark cherries, dark berries, tar/graphite, some sweet spices like licorice and some leather. It's medium-full bodied with medium acidity and still medium+ tannin. Good length. A very expessive NSG at the beginning of the drinking window.

This wine needs lots of time…Drink the 08 and 10 before considering this one.

taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity and some sneaky tannins. There's a nice underlying structure with tones of dark red fruits, earth tones and dark red cherries.
