Bordeaux 2004 - 20 Years On - 33 Reds: All wines tasted blind, not decanted. Observations: 1) 2004 is a mediocre vintage overall, with many pleasant wines, but without the depth of better years. 2) At the top, the vintage produced some classic, old-school wines with lots of freshness and fresh fruit. 3) At the lower end, many wines lacked fruit and ripe tannins, resulting in some astringent and slightly drying wines. 4) An alarming number of Right Bank wines (5 out of 16, no Left Bank wine) were oxidized, including some heavyweights like Petrus, Evangile or Figeac. An unacceptably high proportion of faulty wines. 5) I’m not sure that the 2004 are currently in a good phase, many of my scores were lower than in previous tastings. The question is if it’s just a weaker phase or the beginning of the end. 6) At the top and the only wine >95pts was a layered Le Pin (rated 96pts), with a charming Vieux Chateau Certan, a surprising Issan and Clos l'Eglise, as well as an elegant Lafite sharing second place (all rated 94pts).
TN: Wonderful red berries, strawberries, and rhubarb on the nose. The best nose all St. Juliens. Perfectly ripe and inviting. On the palate the same fine fruit notes, some green notes. Not as layered as the nose would have suggested but with a fairly fine structure and good balance. Good but not great, missing complexity and expression on the palate for a higher rating.

Nose: pepper, leather, forest floor, coffee, hints of violet Notes: Ex-Chateau until 2022. Drank after breathing for 1 hour. Since 2000 I think the left bank has managed to completely eliminate weak years and this supposedly weak vintage is also showing incredible strength and seems impossible to open up at this moment. Las Cases is often considered the top Chateau in Saint Julien and although I was never a fan of the appellation I must admit that the power and intensity of LLC is impressive and breathtaking. I don't think it's the right time to open this wine given its pristine condition, the wine opened up merely after breathing and shut down quickly after. I would drink it after 2030. Drink: 2030+ Rating: 90

Elegant, classic but lacking depth and complexity. Maybe a tiny bit better than the last bottle I rated 90pts but could not recommend this at the price, given other choices. The weak vintage shows.

3 hours, decanted, perfect, matured, balanced. On the beginning of the peak. Five years more - no problem. Unfortunately my last bottle out of three....

Holding steady from a year ago - nothing really to add from my last note. But the decant helps this wine tremendously, so make sure you have at least four hours before drinking.

Double decanted, with an hour of air in the decanter before going back in the bottle. Served next to a 2003, which showed riper fruit and was immediately more drinkable, this was reserved and still tight. Half the bottle held for day 2, where it was dramatically more open and supple on the palate. Day 1, would give the nod to 2003, Day 2, 2004 jumps into the lead. I'd be in no rush to drink these.

Nice nose of darker fruit, cedar, graphite, and a touch of brambles. Then, I really tried to appreciate this second growth. My eighth of 12 bottles and they all were similar. I have enjoyed many other vintages of this usually great wine. However, there was a lack of concentration and an acidity that overpowered the cassis and lavender. 2 hours in the decanter before tasting. Tasted the second night and no better. Tasted with several Francophiles and all had the same thoughts. Purchased the case from Costco. Impeccable bottles and corks so probably not the issue.

Keller & Haart tasting (Concept Riesling, Düsseldorf, Germany): Decanted for sediment. Black fruit, cassis, some pencil shavings and a little earthiness coming through. Still rather primary. Amazingly bright acidity which makes it really fresh. You will have finished your glass before you know it. Drinking quite well now, but a little more ageing won't hurt it.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, fairly clear looking throughout. Nose of smoke, black cherries and black berries. Flavors of black cherries, black berries and black raspberries. Bright to tangy acidity, medium to firm tannin, full bodied. Drink now with some air or can be held.

3rd of 24, opened 30 minutes then decanted 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, approaching excellence of first bottle, cassis primary with hints of earth and graphite, classic and complex with exceptional persistence (hints of a Lafite like fantail), significant upside, 20+ years. F+ (18).

From a 750ml bottle purchased on the secondary with a fill that was well into the neck. Cork soaked only a couple millimeters. Lots of sediment. No bricking to speak of. Served after an excellent 2009 Gloria, which I served first as a pacesetter.
This was very tannic upon opening, so I took DJ Hammond’s advice and decanted it for 4 hours, which was just right. When it came time to serve it, the wine had really come together, softened, and developed some light notes of undergrowth. It was well concentrated, with red over black fruits, and the cabernet franc portion of the assemblage was very much on display, adding a touch of complexity by giving the nose and palate an herbaceous zest. The balance was impeccable, and the fruit was very deep and pure. This was probably the highlight. I would guess this bottle was in the first half of its middle-maturity plateau, and it had the fruit and tannins to go for quite some time, for sure.
In the final analysis, this was a touch simple, and I preferred the 2009 Gloria by a slim margin. (Goes to show just how high a great vintage raises the more modest boats in the marina.) That being said, this was a very good, highly enjoyable bottle, which was drinking perfectly. 13% ABV (very good; above average; distinguished; compelling/***/16.5/93)

My second bottle of a case, this was last tasted just over a year ago, and it is in pretty much the same place. With 4 or 5 hours in the decanter, this is in a sweet spot and firmly in its drinking window. It is fascinating how forward the left bank wines from 2004 are in their development, and they plug the gap whilst waiting for other vintages to age sufficiently. It is a typical Las Cases with big old schoool robust flavours with blackcurrant blackberry, and earth prominent and sharp crunchy tannic notes underlying. It probably is not to more modern tastes, and needs to be enjoyed with food. The balance and length on the finish are first rate, but it does lack depth on the palate. Undoubtedly this is still in evolvement, but ready to drink now with sufficient aeration.

Subtle and sophisticated, this is a classy Las Cases, thanks to TC for sharing this at both tea time and our Overseas Imbi dinner last night!
Raspberry nose, and then plenty of black licorice on the palate. Wow, a long finish!
76% CS, 13% Merlot, 11% CF.. Jean-Hubert Delon, of Domaines Delon (LLC has been with the family since the late 19th century!) in this 2004 vintage tried to create a lighter version inspired by the 1986/96 LCs. I think he has succeeded, it is not such a typical big bold Saint-Julien.
Luscious mouthfeel and very fine tannins, nice complex layers. This is both a good Wine for solo drinking, but also one which pairs with Char Siew or barbecue roast pork Chinese style!
Preparation.. One bottle was decanted for an hour, whilst the other was left to bottle breathe for 3 hours. The slight barnyard and earthy aromas went away to be replaced by red fruit aromas!
1st bottle at home.. 2nd bottle in Overseas Imbi, Malaysia - 21 Aug 2022

WWC Hosting (FWC): Decanted for about 4 hours. The purity of fruit in this wine is great. It needs the air, but with about 4 hours, it has a soft and subtle nose of red cherry, with not bright, and not stewed, just good red fruits on the palate. This one has a decent runway ahead, and is well made, with good structure, integrating tannins, and pure fruit.

Dark and deep in the glass; fairly good lift on the nose, with dark fruit and pepper, with pleasant but subdued aromatics (it needs more time in the decanter). Wonderful balance in the mouth, but just a little lacking in depth.
It is probably the vintage that is at fault.
I will put the rest of this bottle away, and come back to it tomorrow.

Last time I tasted was 1 year ago. No changes. Big tannins that were somewhat tame but overwhelmed the fruit. Spent 1 hour in the decanter and did not change much if at all over 2-3 hours. Perhaps needs several more years or more decanter time. I think there is potential here.

Vanilla and butter with hints of red fruit. Fruit remains buried on palate but in summary not as powerful as anticipated, opened well in glass and almost ready for drinking.

I have consistently scored this in the 93-94 range over the years. This was the last bottle and probably the best. Decanted 3 hours, it helped a little but never really changed that much. Very quality wine, good fruit, starting to open a bit. Has great elegance to it. Plenty of time for it to develop more.

2nd of 24, opened 90 minutes, decanted 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, smaller scaled impression than bottle in July and less delineation, sense of going into shell, didn't find any of the green notes in JL's note below but a bit too well mannered for LLC of this age, upside probable in couple of years. Downgraded for now to F+ (18).

Amazing! Beautiful deep ruby, medium viscosity. Decanting over an hour, during the first 20 minutes flavors of iron, tobacco, leather dominated. By the hour the blackberry and cherry came forward into perfect balance. Great with lamb chops! What a finish. Pair well with Hank Mobley solo! Should have decanted much longer but I couldn't help it.

a little bit like my 2017 note this was tough to love (still). It doesn't have BDX tertiary development, yet the fruit is closed, muted. I was hoping 4 extra years would do the trick but this (and this if it ever opens/develops, which is an if) needs more time. I will wait another 4-5 years for my final bottle and hope for better.

A bit stoic, the wine is an old-school, classic, firm Claret with a distinctive green, peppery edge to the bright, crunchy, red currants and cranberry fruits on the nose and palate. Definitely not generous, this is better suited for consumers that are not fans of riper vintages.

From magnum. Still quite big and primary. Purple fruit with thAT darker fruit Bordeaux nose of some pencil, graphite, smoke, and medium+ finish. Great and youngish. Bested by a surprisingly strong ‘78 LLC alongside and a great ‘82 LLC.

1st of 24, opened 4 hours, decanted 45 minutes, perfect cork and level - glossy dark ruby, purple edged, leggy; fruity nose, cassis and bramble, some tobacco, attractive and complex if less so than usual for LLC and less so than Margaux 02 on same night; medium bodied, excellent line and length if without concentration of top vintage, fruit hiding attractive fine grained tannic structure, balanced, refreshing sweet core, enough umpff to develop well and gain more secondaries, early days but remarkably accessible for LLC of this age. VF (18.5).........better drink on night than Margaux 02 but both should be more interesting in 10 to 20 years time and thanks to DJH's excellent note below prompting me to pull my first bottle! (Bit reminiscent in style to the currently outstanding 85 after 15 years!)

For a wine with such an extraordinary pedigree, it continues to disappoint. Decanted for an hour before drinking, now on hour 3. Don’t know if at this stage it’s a PnP, but have been underwhelmed every time we drink this wine. Great nose and weak palate. Nobody more disappointed than I, but will not save my remaining bottles for anything special.

Such a clean cork. Colour is still deep ruby, possibly a hint of garnet around the narrowest clear rim. Nose is all Left Bank - pass the pencil etc! Palate is massive cassis with a saline streak folding into the softest fine grained tannins with a burst of fruit on the long long finish. Bottle 8 of 12 - gosh I wish it was 1 of 12 as this has a good few years left and is just hitting its stride. Occasionally one become Bored With Bordeaux - and then along comes a wine to remind you what it’s all about!
Decanted. Lovely classic nose right upon opening which kept up over a couple of hours. Medium deep red no signs of age in the color. St. Julien nose of graphite, sandalwood, dark fruits and sage. On the palate this has excellent medium weight flavors with nice integration of fruit and tannins, which are quite fine and not at all obtrusive. This is only missing the depth and power of better vintages such as 82 and 90. A tribute to a fine terroir and wine making team in a challenging vintage. I think this is at or close to peak drinkability.

This is my first bottle and I continue to be amazed at how forward the 2004 vintage is. Although possessing a very youthful appearance with no signs of bricking, this has started to fire on all cylinders. Blackcurrant, blackberry and earth dominate, and everything is well integrated on the palate with sweetened tannin and a perfectly balanced finish which pushes 60 seconds. A lightness on the palate is the only barrier to a higher rating. This was decanted for 3 hours and it was needed. This will continue to evolve and I have no problem drinking this over the next decade and a half.

Light, soft. Medium dark profile with tight berries, earth and mushroom. This is in a great place, drinking wonderfully. Minty, feminine, gentle and light. Really nice, great complexity, resolved tannins. Light long finish. Nice if a bit light.

Popped to slow ox before dinner - will update as we go.
immediate taste - this is a dark garnet, with no real sign of bricking/orange at the rim. Lovely at the get go, doesnt feel particularly shut down to me. No substantial sign of tertiary flavours yet.
If I had to guess, I'd say its just entering its prime drinking winddow, with probably 5 years at this before it starts to develop those tertiary notes in any substantial way.
Really pleasant, will update.
I think this was best about an hour in - didnt improve that much beyond the initial taste though. Still, good. Probably a few years at this level before it goes tertiary.

Still fresh and youthful although about to enter its mature phase. Needed time to settle down after decanting so would suggest a minimum of 2 hour decant if possible but this bottle was at its best after 4 hours. Not a huge amount of fruits but had ample of earthiness, cigar notes and a hint of forest floor. Medium body but with power and a graceful finish. Excellent wine then and drink now or 7+ years.

Decanted 90 minutes prior. Deep mahogany-mulberry hue. Blackcurrant, black cherries, some cedarwood and pencil shavings, as well as dark chocolate and a hint of vanilla. Medium/full bodied, rich with good intensity. Tannins softening, has great balance and a long finish. Excellent for an average vintage. Consumed with roast beef.

Have had this on 4 occasions- apart from once it hasn’t disappointed. Smooth, silky texture. Vanilla and spice. It’s beginning to lose some weight but will drink well for a while from here.
Russk. Had the 04 and the 06 together at Mark's house. Both had a touch of wet wood. Both were balanced and medium bodied. The 04 had more earth and the 06 more acid.

Served with 2003. Opened both several hours before consuming. Though early in the drinking window, the 2003 was very, very good. Blackberry, slight touch of earth, flowers, and lithe though medium bodied. It was dancing. Consumed at dinner with the 2004. The '04 was much more brooding. Harsher tannins, less fruit and a less acidity. Both wines stored in temprature controlled environments.

Used a Vinturi to decant and decanted for one hour, and drank over the next 2 hours. The wine had a nice fragrant, perfumed nose upon opening and the palate seemed initially closed upon coming in contact with the mouth/tongue, but then showed a burst of fruit and tertiary flavors.
Upon drinking after the initial decant, the nose was not quite as perfumed, but still showed plenty of red and black fruit, and a host of tertiary flavors, including earth, gravel, pencil lead, dusty leather, and a hint of sweet toasted oak. The mouthfeel was slightly shallow, but showed well resolved tannins and a hint of liveliness that shows this wine still has quite a bit of life in it. The finish was medium-long and complex. I felt like a battle going on between sweet fruit and dusty leather-like flavors fighting for dominance. All in all, this is a well balanced wine from a good vintage sandwiched between to excellent vintages. The wine is drinking well now with a decant (I would recommend 2 hours if not using an aerator). However, I would be in no hurry to open my bottles. I have 3 left, and will likely share one when the quarantine is over, and drink the following 2 during the next 5-7 years, although I think it has a good 10-15 years of life still left in it (assuming you still want some fruit to show). 94+

(GG Tasting, 1 Glass) - Initially barnyard notes came through but this settled down and closed up. Classical in style, pencil shavings, earthy, shorter finish than the 09, yet strangely, I prefer the 04 over the two (at this stage anyhow). Enjoyed this.

Opened three hours before decanting, allowed to breathe then served. Classic nose of the St Julien, ripe and floral with spice and a hint of cigar ash. Same on the palate, still lush in spite of age, wonderful graceful finish. Opened in celebration of Eric's gift to us all 15 years ago when he presented us with CellarTracker, by far the most useful cellar management system I've ever encountered. For me, it replaced three printed cellar books and two previous on-line databases over the last 30-odd years. Now all that's required is self-discipline to maintain it. Still working on that. Many thanks, Eric. And congratulations on your baby's 15th birthday!

I confess to enjoying my Bordeaux with enough age to soften tannins and for some tertiary aromas to develop, so this one is not (yet) for me. On immediate drinking after a 3 hour decant it was closed - almost cold on the palate. Tannins most definitely there, although by no means the fearsome bite from them that this chateau is famous for..... By the end of the evening the last sips of the last glass were beginning to show dark red fruits, softening tannins and a whiff of minerality. Something to keep away from (for me) for at leaat another two years, and quite possibly a lot longer...

From a 375ml auction bottle, my last bottle of the 2004 vintage, nose of red cherry, black berry, cigar box, and pencil lead, same on the palate, medium/big body, in its peak drinking window with a long timeframe ahead for enjoyment, rich and juicy and creamy fruit, this makes it delicious tasting on the palate, elegant and refined, and a long, flavorful finish. Perfect wine to enjoy while watching the Super Bowl. Uploaded label photo of the bottle.

Fantastic bottle. (Great paired with lamb chops with pistachio tapenade). In a terrific place - still showing some fruit from its youth but also showing secondary flavors as well. Smooth, well balanced. The finish is really long, but still showing a little tannic bite. If I had a bunch of these I'd be drinking some now.

Medium body and the essence of harmonious finesse. A classic example of StJ from an early drinking vintage. Not as full flavored like some of the better years, but everything is in place. This needs a short decant, but it’s very enjoyable and ready to go.

Lovely LLC. Has been a while since I last popped a bottle. Glacial pace at maturing but wine tannins have softened. Deep ruby red color, decanted and let breathe for an hour then drank over 90 minutes. Nose of cassis, dark red fruits, sweet tobacco, stone, pencil lead. On the palate very soft entry, very good weight mid palate with dark red fruits, cassis, coffee / olives, medium bodied, good finish slightly short. Not the most complex LLC but pleasant nonetheless very enjoyable.

Decanted, given some vinturi, and rebottled on the morning of drinking (given other notes which suggest it develops). Aromatic, balanced, but one-dimensional. Not much grip, and not obviously young to suggest more room for development. Too bad, for the price.

Soft and Ripe in a modern style. No wow factor as I recall from bottles consumed in the early 80s. Purchased on release and kept in climate control. Wish I had opened a few years ago. Will attribute the style to the vintage. Not as purple as I recall.

Good condition bottle bought in auction last year, absolutely consistent with Chateau provided bottle tasted last month. 2004s (not just las cases) drank brilliantly 5 years ago and are now fading fast. Undergrowth and blackcurrant nose, with cedar and mineral on the medium to light bodied palate. Great balance and loads of soft tannins make this a beautifully smooth drink. Lovely fading old fashioned claret. Drink NOW.

3+ hours decant. and only got better as we drank it. Dark. Some development here. Cabernet nose, dark berries, hints of cedar, pencil shave and leather. St Julien id is there, but not as evident as is often the case. Structured, voluptuous. There is a coolness to the fruit which I like. Aristocratic. Very good lenght. Still unlocked potential here me think. 93-94+ for now.

Decanted for three hours the wine had a wonderful first taste and flavour hit. More fruit than I expected and a good length. Lovely aroma too. This wine is easy to keep swirling and sniffing. Wow. Beautiful claret here. Popped and poured two bottles which were equally as delicious (no bottle differentiation). Lots of oak and graphite on the nose. The flavours were incredible; cassis, blackberry, blueberry and oak were the main standouts. This wine still has a lot of life left! Easily able to age for another decade if not more. What a treat. Enjoyed with cheese. 92+

Decanted prior to a dinner of grilled rack of lamb.
Clear, medium ruby color, youthful hue, no signs of bricking at 13+ years. Developing aromatics with medium plus intensity notes of blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, red plum, toasty cedar, light baking spice, some smokiness, green bell pepper, and forest floor. Quite a bit of aromatic complexity. Dry on the palate. Medium plus flavors of ripe blackberry, smokey black cherry, juicy blueberry, sweet, spicy red plum, dark chocolate, green bell pepper, leafy tobacco, and chewy cedar mulch. Medium alcohol and medium body. Fine grained medium plus tannin and medium plus acidity support a very long finish. An outstanding wine which hit all the right notes: complexity, intensity and depth, great balance and lots of length. Can drink now may be suitable for further aging. Still has lots and lots of life. Perfect accompaniment to the grilled lamb.

At home w/casual dinner of pulled pork and homemade slaw...not the best pairing but was in the mood for Bdx and thought would revisit this wine. PnP, drank over 3 hours
Deep purple/red core color, some separation on the edge. Nose more restrained (from memory than last tasting), dark fruits, cedar, herbs, mild barnyard. Palate showing dark berries, blueberry, coffee, chocolate, oak. Elegant texture and mouthfeel, picking up some tart secondary notes, licorice. Medium weight and finish. Tannins mild but still there...
Nice wine, Las Cases is consistent in my experience. This bottle was good and will continue to evolve, but not great. Drinking well now and tannic structure suggests it will hold for a while, but I dont think it improves much from here. Classic St Julien, vintage may be holding this wine back?

Decanted and drank over 2 hours. Dark tart fruits, hints of coffee cranberry, silky mouthfeel, good concentration, excellent purity of fruit, medium finish. Enjoyable, but this wine had no character. There is no nuance, no secondary flavors, no personality. If I’m drinking Napa I would expect this style of wine, but for high end Bordeaux there should be more going on to stimulate my palate. Drinks like a restrained $40 Napa cab.

Chateau Leoville Las Cases Vertical with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): Quite dark color here, no purple though. A very pretty nose here, herbaceous, light pepper , touch of cedar. Interestingly as it developed and we revisited it it had more chocolate and coffee notes. On the palate it is ,as expected, young and a bit tight with a bit of an unpolished especially on the tannin side. That been said a very pretty wine and one to buy now to age for a good 10years plus. 92-94

Drank this at a wine dinner last night at Wah Lok Restaurant. Theme of the night: 1st wine of 2nd growth, or 2nd wine of 1st growth.
Purple in colour with a well defined nose of plums, blueberries, blackcurrants and mushrooms. Very good texture and structure with an impressive presence and style. On the palate the wine presented a harmony of acidity, fruit, body and structure, with elegance and charm.
Finish was long and endearing. Marvelous.

BBR 2016 Bordeaux tasting (London): Brief notes but didn't leave any mark. Restrained nose and palate. Skip this vintage in Las Cases or just in a dumb phase still?

This was served alongside the 2016 barrel sample. Quite backward, still less embryonic on the nose with notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco, dark and red fruit. Quite spicy and mineral on the palate, like on the nose quite restrained and tight. Not overly generous, fresh, and well balanced. Elegant and long. 92-93+

evolving at glacial pace. Slightly disappointing on the night, deep blackcurrant and cherry liqueur but no tertiary development, limited length and complexity. Needs a lot of time and slight ? mark to me. Same price as a recent Ornellaia from the same year and the Ornellaia is two planets better.

Another great wine from this first-class estate. This was was a little more elegant and feminine in comparison to the Leoville Barton and Poyferre. It was a touch lighter in color as well, while still offering just as much depth on the palate as the Barton. This wine is clearly developing at a much slower pace and will need several more years before it starts to show it. While enjoyable, I would be reluctant to open any more for several years.

Drank up the last bottle in my Miami Beach home, gotta send reinforcements from the NYC/NJ cellar. Decanted for three hours and as we drank, the wine was perfect. Layered tannins that give this wine complexity and uniqueness, allow the blackberry with currant and cherry to merge with the expresso and pain grille. Drinking excellent now and for another decade or more. Showing as one of wines of the vintage, along with its sister, the year earlier, the 2003 Leoville Poyferre.

Acker Holiday Auction (A Voce Madison): Had forgotten that we tried this just a week and a half before. The nose is all fruit, but the palette doesn't quite match. Overall a bit muted. It's more earth and barn (like the wood and the hay, not the yard). Still too young.

Zachys Holiday - Dec 2016 (Smith & Wollensky (48th & 3rd Ave)): Starting to get more and more into Bordeaux. This has cloves and black fruits and harder tannins and is still just obviously too young to be drinking. Would like to see again in 10 years.

Some dark earth and mushroom balanced with mild dark fruit on nose and palate. Unmistakably old world. Moderate tannins only partially integrated. Perhaps will get much better with age. 4 hour decant. Did not change much the second night.

Bright red color. Ripe and expressive nose, dark fruits, cassis and vanilla oak. Palate of sweet cherry, blue fruits, violet and licorice. Powerful in style for St Julien, medium mouthfeel and long finish.
Not a celebrated vintage, very nice now and seems to have the structure to continue to evolve

Probably going to this too often, while waiting for "better" vintages. Gave it an all day decant, had it following a 2005 Hillside Select. This was old versus new world for sure. The Leoville has decades to go. It's certainly drinking ok now, has the structure to change and reward.

Decanted for four hours, a somewhat brooding wine, can drink now if you bought a case, otherwise wait. Everything you'd expect from Leoville, and very good for a so so vintage. Expect it will get better and better, go another twenty years.

See previous notes. Losing all of its rough edges this wine is becoming rounder and more elegant with time. Will evolve very nicely over the next few years.

Probably unfair at this point. I just wasn't expressive and as someone suggested it was thin but still had some weight. Don't know is going on but it was just a good table wine tonight.

Last meal before heading to France, let's pick something good and (for me) uncommon and possibly educational. Gained some needed depth on the palate after an hour+ in the decanter. It was never hard, tannic, or challenging, but became a classy moderate sort of wine, complementing, not overshadowing the soy glazed beef tenderloin. While I like the common graphite/pencil element, I've yet to truly fall for Bordeaux, but this wine evolved as I sat with it and made me wish I had a few more to follow in the coming years. Will it put on more depth and complexity, or is this what a well made wine from a ok vintage is supposed to taste like?

Nose - boysenberry, plum - fresh nose Mouth - concentrated, very round and smooth, dark fruits on the attack followed by a very delineated almost liquid Rock midpalate and a long tannic slightly sour finish. A complex wine which reveals a bit more each time you take a sip. I'm drinking this too young which is not ok as I've no more in my stash.

Drank this probably a decade or two too young. This was all about fruits, with tannins well hidden behind them, so much so that it almost felt new-world'ish. A very good wine though, and am sure that this will definitely glow in time to come.

Pretty black purple color, decanted for two hours, black currant and blackberry with cherry on the edge, this super smooth beauty cultivates a classic mouth feel from tongue to mid palate to the lingering rich expresso finish. Full of harmony and balance.

Mediocre year in Bordeaux but a great producer! Big nose with leather, caramel, ripe black fruit and licorice. Great palate, well balanced and full of flavor. For an '04... Perfect.

The color does not show the age of the wine, as there is very little bricking taking place on this 12-year old beauty. Two years ago, I felt the tannins were still gripping, but no more -- now sweet and silky. Black cherry, cranberry, cassis, wet stones, a hint of pencil lead and tobacco - but not dominant.

earthy fragrant nose mouth - restrained, pure, and very nicely balanced. nice cassis flavors. very elegant. a classic wine. good minerality. has plentiful acidity to ensure a long life. tasted alongside the 2004 Pavie and while the LLC was less lush and fruit forward, i find it to be more classically styled and a better pairing for food.

Probably one pf the best left banks for this vintage. Decanted and aerated for three hours and drank over an hour. Deep ruby, youthful still, excellent nose of cassis, pipe tobacco, blackberries and black currants, dynamic entry on the palate, gently coats the mid palate, good acidity well balanced with just the right amount of power and finesse, decent finish with tannins well integrated

Last dry red of the night after Valandraud 2008, Daumas Gassac Emile Peynaud 2001, Dal Forno Valpolicella 2006, so it had some tough competition...and it performed quite well. Obviously, you can tell that this is not a exceptional vintage, but it's still a very good mature classified growth. The nose had medium intensity animal aromas and the palate was balanced without being too complex. Overall, very nice.

Opened a half bottle to go with grilled burgers and eggplant, nose of cigar box, leather, black cherry fruit, more of the same on the palate, medium body, rich and delicious tasting fruit, long flavorful finish.

It first opened with cherry, hard candy aromas that were tight and closed in. Then, with more air, some pencil lead and violets and uncanny Chateau Latour aromatics. Thought I was in for a real treat, but the palate seems a bit watery/dilute. I have found that to be a 2004 Vintage characteristic. It certainly was elegante with charming red fruits. One could say, classic. Tannins were slightly green, but not edgy. Age has helped, and I'm sure more time will improve this wine. But, I would focus on better vintages from this Chateau.

Juicy deep berry claret with a fair degree of quality new oak still showing. Has lost some of the edges of youth but that's all - will still gain from another decade in the cellar.

Brief decant at home before consuming at restaurant less than hour later. Took about 30-60mins more before opening up a bit. Upon tasting, medium body, smooth entry, good fruits (but not ripe fruits mouth feel), smoke, earth, wood, liquorice, mushroom. More elegant than powerful, medium tannin that seems balance. More acidic than expected. Enjoyable, but probably only starting to show its character?

Appearance: Bright and clear, it has deep ruby color, with paler rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of black fruit such as cassis, plum and blackberry, kernel notes of chocolate, maturity notes of savory and tobacco, pungent spice of licorice, sweet spice of cloves, oak notes of cedar. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin which is ripe and velvety. Medium in alcohol, it has medium (+) body and medium intensity flavors of black fruit such as cassis, blackberry and plum, pungent spice of licorice, kernel notes of chocolate, oak notes of vanilla and cedar. The wine has a medium (+) finish. Conclusion: Very good quality Bordeaux left bank, showing good intensity on the nose with complex characters, the palate is elegant and structured, with good balance of fruit and tannin, demonstrating how well the terroir and the style of the St-Julien commune to the full extent. With good concentration and a fairly long length, it is ready to drink now though can further develop for another 3-5 years.

Really drinking nicely right now. Expected it to be more tight and closed, and only gave about an hour to breathe. Gorgeous nose, by far the best thing about the wine was the nose- so complex its ripe red fruit, earth, cedar. Pretty rich on the palate in the initial intake and hollows out a bit in the middle though ( this was my biggest complaint on this wine). Black currant, cherry, green pepper, cedar. Finish was a tad short as well. Expected a little more but still an elegant and classic bordeaux wine. Will probably drink my last 2 bottles over the next 5 years.

Popped, decanted and poured at restaurant. Medium bodied, medium tannins that became more prominent at the finish. Smooth, elegant with good structure. Blackberry, plum, mild spices, complex well balanced flavors that were initially somewhat muted but started to open up about an hour in and kept getting better and better. If you can wait, hold at least for another 3 years. Your patience will be rewarded.

Lovely wine. Decanted and aerated for about an hour and drank over two. Rich crimson red, slight signs of evolution, great nose of blackberries, liquorice, sweet tobacco, spice cake. Velvety entry on the palate, nice acidity and backbone mid palate with dense luscious black fruits, good balance and structure, medium to full bodied, and a decent finish with very fine and increasingly integrating tannins. Can only get better with time. A year or two away from full maturity.

Still showing nice depth of color, with wet earth, ocean, truffle, blackberry and campfire embers are found with only a little effort. The tannins have softened, leaving you with a classically styled, mouthful of black cherry liqueur and fennel that shifts from black fruit to red fruit and back to black again. Drink now, or age it 5-8 years for more softness and complexity. Due to the vintage, this is probably well priced in the marketplace today.
Drank to celebrate New Year. 1 hour decant and drank over 3 hours. Dark red with a purple core. Nose of black fruits (strawberries on the second day) and chocolate. Medium to full bodied with a gentle and elegant feel in the mouth. Medium acidity.
Still in its young phase but definitely in its early drinking window. I suspect this has many years left and will start to develop more mature notes in the next 5+ years.
Wow. On the second day (left overnight in the fridge) this developed into an extremely smooth and elegant wine. A superb experience on day 2 jumping from a 90/91 up to a 93

This wine keeps getting better with age. An hour decant is sufficient to release the wine's aromas of sweet tobacco, dark red and black fruits, spice and graphite. The austerity is dissipating leaving a more layered wine, gentle on the palate entry, rich mid palate with excellent structure, full body and a lengthening finish. I'm loading up on this wine.

Deep ruby color. Surprisingly, this wine needed no decant to be approachable; however, it did evolve over 2+ hours. Nose opened up with dark cherries, plum, brown spices, vanilla, and graphite. The palate displayed more elegance than power. Tannins prominent, but rounded and integrating well. A very well-balanced wine. Overall, this wine was highly enjoyable from start to finish. I can only imagine that it will improve over the next 10+ years. I would have no reservations opening another bottle in the near future, however. I'm sure I will.

My score keeps improving as the wine continues to age and evolve / mature. I have bought 3 cases in the past 5 years and drank 2 already. Decanted and aerated for an hour and drank over two hours. Sweet nose of dark fruit, vanilla, spice, pipe tobacco, blackish crimson color, no signs of aging. Velvety entry on the palate, great weight mid palate with sweet fruit, now almost completely shedding the austerity of the 04 vintage, solid acidity, backbone, and increasing complexity, but the finish lags behind the rest of the wine. Excellent wine, one of my favorites.

Got it out of wine cellar and opened for 3h. Still way too young. Only very slowly reveals a hint of its true potential. I start to believe the myth that Las Cases only peaks after 10+ years. Will definitely not open any 2006 vintage for 5+ years. Impressive colour and dark edge. Nose was rather limited. Let us hold 2 more years?

Poured into decanter for an hour before drinking. Wonderful nose with tobacco, blackfruits and hints of graphite. Just love these kind of complex and lovely Bordeaux nose a lot. On palate, however, is very close indeed. Sinky and smooth, lack of structure, no noticable tannin, alcoholic finish. Better to cellar it for few more years.

Decanted over two hours and drank over another hour. Deep ruby color, blackish at the core. Nose of cassis, dark red berries, sweet tobacco and graphite. Smooth entry on the palate, some austerity mid palate with leather, cassis and graphite dominating, excellent balance and acidity, medium to full bodied, and a good finish with tannins mostly integrated under the wine's structure. As always a pleasure to drink this wine.

2004 Bordeaux ... 10 years on (Bordeaux Index London): The most depth of the three Léovilles in 2004: certainly shows layers of flavor. Intensity that neither Barton nor Poyferre match. Wow, this has some serious gravitas! And freshness. My easy preference among the three.

Drinking very well at a young age for Leoville. Can't remember opening a Leoville this young but no regrets. A little more western than old world but the estate has given us yet another excellent wine. Perhaps my favorite of the vintage to date altho still have the Haut Brion and Margaux and Mouton untasted. Will change that soon.

Nice medium to full body color saturation. This has a very Tuscan bouquet in my opinion with delectable sweet cherries in their liqueur, currants, evolving into hints of truffled doughy caramel. Palate still displays some austerity with some macerated dark fruits, bright acidity and edgy tannins. Finishes medium short with nice flavors of fruit paste, tannins, and a touch of oxide. This one has wonderful nose but keeps all else close to the vest. Give it more time. 93?

Attractive from the first pour, without decanting - cassis, graphite & subtle burnt caramel. Actually got a little less juicy 2 hrs later. Delicious and fresh, but still tightly wound and more a banker than a musician. I'm liking the 04s now, esp margaux.

The graphite, cassis and surprisingly unrelenting tannic structure continue to dominate this wine. I thought the tannins were smoothing out two years ago, but they surprised me tonight, seeming a little more mouth puckering than I recalled. There was also a heavier flavor profile of mineral, or stones, that seemed new to me, but I think others have found before. A thoroughly enjoyable wine tonight, but continues to indicate that more is to come with time. Will plan on checking back in during 2016 or so.

Violet ruby color, slow viscosity. Complex nose: blueberry and goji, menthol, tobacco leaf, sawdust, caramel, licorice root. Exquisite balance: sweet red fruit, sparkling acidity, earthy spice, and fully integrated tannins that coat the throat. A thinnish spell mid to late palate indicates a weak vintage, but the pedigree of this wine is apparent. I would drink up within the next 2 years tho, as this beauty might not last.

Checking in on this after a 4 year hiatus. Decanted 30 minutes, small bottle, and is beautiful. Dark red, lighter to the rim, such a predictable and beautiful evolution. Red and black fruit lead the fragrant nose, medium-full, taut and energetic on first taste. Length reveals tobacco, mouth-watering on the finish, which persists. Wonderful. Agree with time in decanter, not pushing onto much secondary evolution at this point, even from 375ml. Major success, and building higher. Deserving of the Christmas Prime Rib, without question.

This is vintage Leoville, pure and exquisitely concentrated and ready to drink. What a difference six months has made. Decant for an hour and you are on the Derby winner, the other 04's hoping to catch up to this full-bodied marvel. Gorgeous purple wraps the layered tannins that caress blackberry and cherry fruit, currant, sweet expresso, vanilla, morning toast -all in perfect balance. Aromatically exciting, I am delighted that I bought a case at futures. Selected 2004's are revealing it is a year of value and quality. This wine has the roses around its neck!

This wine keeps improving with age and is close to maturity within two years. Lovely weight now, excellent nose of black fruits, leather, cassis, sweet tobacco, sweetness and ripeness of fruit on the palate, dark crimson color, great acidity and minerality, improving finish with better length, good body and tannins sweet and almost resolved. Excellent to drink now. One of my favorite wines for the vintage.

Classic is good sense, with its structure, tannin and wealth of dark fruit, earth, stone, cedar and cassis. Powerful, fresh and backward, at least 5 more years should add more complexity and soften the wine's texture.

Brilliant wine and drinking beautifully although a couple more years at least will do wonders for this vintage. Now evolving fast with gobs of black and dark red fruits, mocha, tobacco, this medium to full bodied wine is a hedonist's pleasure. Only fault is the finish which is slightly short but overall complex wine, grainy tannins and nice balance overall.

Definitely the previous bottle was a fluke as this bottle was beautiful and reconfirmed this wine is in it's early drinking phase with the nose and palate just beginning to evolve secondary aromas and flavors. Lovely complex wine with notes of cassis, leather, tobacco on the nose and medium to full bodied. This bottle didn't open up like the last few I've had so I should have kept in decanter much longer than the hour or two that i did so to soften the tannins. Still an excellent wine.

Double decanted an hour and ahalf before drinking, medium-bodied, good concentration, balanced and excellent structure, but missed the wow I was expecting. The 2001 Palmer killed in comparison. The aromatics were subdued with black currant and cherry with some saddle leather and forest floor. Nice texture and complexity with chocolate and tobacco and a pleasing finish. I was expecting more.
Lovely wine, drinking really well like most 2004 left banks after an hour or so in the decanter. Delicious and first growth quality, complex, refined, deep ruby with black core, a very youthful race horse, nice purity of fruit layered with leather, sweet tobacco, black fruits and mocha. A true pleasure to drink now but should last another 20 years. Outstanding value of a LLC.

I am definitely partial to LLC. Nose open from start with blackberries, cassis, some leather, decanted and drank over 2 - 3 hours, a delight to the senses, lavish entry on palate, medium to full bodied, black and red currants, berries, needs a bit more complexity mid palate and finishes decently with tannins present but very velvety, great backbone and a touch of coffee / mocha at the end. Hope my stock lasts over next 10 years. Pure delight.

Saturday night special with venison steak, salsa verde sauce, potato gratin and courgette confit followed by various cheeses and ice cream.
Decanted an hour before, immediate oh, so welcome aroma of blackberry, cassis and raspberry. A step off perfection, a restrained reminder of the heavenly Haut Bages Liberal 2006 pre-Christmas.
Surprised by how resolved the tannins seemed already, not even a small forced cough. Consistent in colour - purple red - and in structure - every sip the same over two sublime hours. Easily held its own with and against a range of food flavours but combining best with the seasoned venison.
Only drawback was the all too short sign-off, a brush with coffee and undergrowth and then gone with scant evidence it was ever there.
However if an average Las Cases vintage can deliver so much, so young - more must await in finer years. To be explored further when resources permit.

Dark ruby/garnet in colour. A great wine - still obviously young, but approachable. Not dense or a "blockbuster" - it's understated and refined. It offers a complex bouquet of small red and black berries, smoke, cedar, vanilla and tobacco. There is very good concentration on the palate, but it's light, fresh and elegant - what I love about the 2004 vintage. There is a some nice ripe fruit sweetness on entry, which becomes more savoury across the palate - with liquorice, wet earth, lead pencil and a touch of menthol carried by the well-integrated acids to a moderately long finish. Tannins are beginning to resolve, but still impart a decent grip, which I like. Tannin level and extraction is perfect for the weight; balance is key here. Clearly this will continue to improve over the next 5-10 years, but it's far from a crime to open it now.

Very smooth and silky tannin to this. It is what stands out here. Still very young but drinking suprisingly good now. Long finish with lead pencil shavings, blackberry and cedar box notes. Very fresh and round. Flowers with sweet cassis on the nose, a little hollow on the mid pallet but that is it's only minor flaw. Great wine for the vintage. A nice one.

Leoville Las Cases 2004 > 1982, with Michael Schuster (Bordeaux Index, London): Dark Red in colour, dense core. Dark fruits on the nose, light oak, floral, sweet core and surprisingly open nose. Quite forward and on the fruit with lots of ripe fruit, fresh acidity, good tannin. It could use some more age to be honest. Just a touch light on the mid palate and mild on the finish. Medium weight wine yet harmoneous and enjoyable. 92 and can be approached young.
Compelling nose with rich black fruits, spicy oak, anise, earth. Palate had very smooth tannins, blackberries, vanilla, creme, and chocolate. Nice concentration of fruit and solid finish. Really died on day 2 (?) Overall, excellent wine, but not up to par with better gems of the vintage (Pape Clement & Le Gay).

Best bottle in past 4 years out of four drunk to date. Outstanding after 4-5 hours of aeration in decanter. Complexity beginning to show on the nose, lots of vanilla, black currants and berries, creme de cassis, sweet tobacco, Saint Julien at it's finest. First growth wine, soft entry on palate, vivacity, lots of black fruits and dare I say licorice, flowers, truffles and sweet tobacco mid palate, glorious finish, full body and sheer pleasure, nicely integrated and fine tannins. A real stunner.

What a difference a year makes! Outstanding bottle. Decanted and drank over 2 - 3 hours. Beautiful deep crimson color, blackish at the core, no signs of aging at the rim, very forward nose which reminded me of Latour 2004. Aromas of black fruits, cassis, graphite, vanilla and flowers, velvety entry on the palate, coats the mid palate with layers of dark fruits compote, vanilla, graphite, cassis, complex and dynamic, very nice finish. Stunning for such a young Leoville Las Cases.

May be in a closed phase at the moment, but it's really at this point nothing special, a rather generic Bordeaux. Tannins are the primary experience, as is typical of young Leoville, not joining the trend toward more approachable wines in their youth. Tannins and a rough, gravelly finish, and that's about it. Nothing to recommend it. Tasted from a 375.

Firm and stylish wine. Good nose with some nice inkish soy sauce, tobaccos, oak, vegetal notes, sweet cinnamon spice, graphite-like minerality and lots of dark fruits. A modern-feeling wine, it has great balance, freshness, complexity and nicely layered character. Lush mouthfeel thanks to its very fine tannins, and posses a fresh mouth-watering acidity. Not overly powerful due to the admirably integration of all the elements and really is a well made, balance wine. Seductive.

2012 - Bachelor night (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck @ Paragon): Alcohol :: 13% Opened for 9hrs. Dark ruby red with medium ruby hue. Fresh aromas of new wood, mocha with tons of blackcurrant fruits on the core. Medium - full bodied, with pencil leads, vanilla, blackcurrant and blackberry fruits and culminated with excellent mid palate depth. Perfectly balance, wonderful freshness. Tannin is well defined and silky, but firm and grippy. Lots of juicy and succulent dark fruits tailing at the intensely long finished. Though still young, but there is this friendliness in it and really really yummy. This wine will easily improve in the bottle for another 5-7yrs. 92-94

Short decant. Blackberries, cassis, dried cranberries, and graphite. A little short on the finish, but pleasing. This is drinking really well right now, very pleasurable. But, still lots of life ahead, so I am glad to have 4 more bottles laying back in the cellar.

2012 Bordeaux Trip; 4/1/2012-4/4/2012 (Bordeaux, France): From an enomatic machine and in 2oz samples. Unknown when bottles were opened. No detailed notes. The most closed of all the wines tried, but had a nice core of cherry and cassis, very fine polished tannins and medium concentration. Rather closed though. Needs another 10yrs.

MAN I love this wine.....but I keep going against what I say from the last one...BIG decant, of let it age for another 5! So easy to PnP this....but it really does need some air. Silky smooth, creamy dark liqueur berry fruit....graphite shavings, exotic wood spice, creme de cassis, dark chocolate covered blueberries, wonderful fresh cut flower florals. Silky smooth, yet firm with dry spice tannin, and some acidic spice kick in the finish. That should age out nicely. Love the cold smoke, and graphite powder in this! Some young cigar wrapper and sweet leather as well. Really tasty now....but better in a few...if I'm lucky enough to have any left! +pts

what a great suprise the color is just black! incredible complexe nose with dark cherries, bread, loads of red fruits, plums and crushed rocks the palate is concentrated but with an incredible finesse, very long finish with a tremendous complexity, a must have in this vintage, can age for 15+more years!!!!!

Tremendous dark fruit and berries on the nose with a strong hit of slate and a touch of tobacco. Tremendous structure, powerful tannins, with a refined purity. Clearly young, it still was singing from the first sip and opened up over the course of the night. Medium finish.

2hr decant. Dark red fruit graphite (bacon ?) Very complex seemed to be a little thin spot on the finish but overall an outstanding delicious wine that still needs time to develop to show all it has to offer IMO

Excellent wine. Drank over 2 hours following 2 hours of decanting. Great nose of plums, dark berries, hints of vanilla and graphite, cedar and tobacco. Deep purplish crimson with black core this wine is highly concentrated in fruit, full bodied, slightly backward but was drinking very well. Super structure, on the palate tremendous volume on entry, covers the palate with dark red and black fruits and finishes very long. This wine will do wonders in 5 - 10 years.

A nice Leoville Las Cases. This has been relatively easy to drink from early on - There still is a slight backwardness to this wine that will change with time. Great fruit - nice finish. One of the better wines from this vintage.

Alongside the 1994 LLC at Gulfstream, this showed its relative youth, though over the 4 hours this was open, it definitely changed, shedding some of the fruit and showing how complex this likely will become. Needs time, though it is very nice to drink now too.

Double decanted for 2.5 hrs. Served with Bison filet mignon and King crab Colour: Dark brooding inky purple...typical LLC. Cork was just a shade off black. Plenty of sediment in bottle. Hand not visible through Glass Nose: Fresh red berries...not giving up a lot though. Some mint and frsh leaves Taste: Big mouth coating tannins do give way to a some fruit but clearly this wine is way too young. Has developed nicely since opening. Finish is a bit short less so than expected. This wine has a way to go before maturing but it is very solid and well built.

Good but not great claret -- a patchwork of fruit and wood, it trails off a bit at the end and does not have the depth of character of other strong vintages. Still a pleasurable wine.

n- crushed blackberries, earth, cocoa m- well defined, taut, dark berries fruit, cassis, good minerality, slight oaky finish. nice esp if you like this defined, minerally and not-so-lush style. Good structural tannins but nothing overwhelming and already in its drinking window in my opinion, though i'm curious to see what five years would do for this -perhaps better back end integration of the oak?

Even just off of the cork pull throughly out-classes Poyferre and Barton in the same vintage. Here, much greater drama in the fruit expression and breath across the palate.

Lots of meaty black pepper and plums on the nose. Fresh plums and raw meat dominate the palate. The flavors are a bit simple with a smooth mouthfeel and a pretty tannic finish. Came back on day two and aside from the tannins mellowing out, it didn't show a ton of development. I am perplexed with the 04 vintage. The last few I have had from producers of quality juice have been a far cry from how they showed a year or two ago. I say they all need to be hidden away for another couple years to come back around.

4 Blind Bordeaux: Decanted about 4 hours. This wine has a slightly meaty element on the nose that set it apart from the other 3 wines this evening. There's also a bit more of a mushroom influence as well. There's a nice hit of fruit up front but it starts to fade a bit towards the finish. Seems to be in a bit of a dumb phase at the moment which makes it hard to fairly score but I'd put this in the 90-92 range right now. We saved a little to try at the 24 hour point so I'll update the note once I give it a re-taste.
Update from the next day: The wine seems to have integrated a little better with the extended rest. I'd peg this for a bit more of a long term wine.

First experience w/ this estate but this was stellar. Decanted for 45 minutes prior to consuming and was still fairly tight on the finish when we started. Earthy nose notes of stone/minerality but not much fruit showing through. Finely integrated tannins and nice mouthfeel. Definetly a little earlier for this one but was a treat, paired nicely w/ steak frites.

(mostly) 2004 2nd growth Bordeaux (Waterford Wine Co., Milwaukee): distinct espresso/mocha roast. a green aspect in the nose. lightest color in the flight. all others opaque. this not so much. most structurally austere in the flight of 04 leovilles with a soft mid palate. 50% new oak.

Drama here. A show stopper, or, a heart stopper; at least to me. But oddly, I blindly identified it as a Margaux. It is that perfumed.
Soft on the palate, but with tannins, lively, full. A real show stopper. Makes the Poyferre from the same vintage just look good, while the Barton is so much less elegant. All are, of course, very good wines, but this is a cut above.

Tasted next to the Poyferre and Barton from 2004, and this was its own animal. The nose was amazingly distinct. Smelled like the baked, bubbly crust of a berry cobbler. A little burnt/graphite hints around the edges. Has a crazy stony aspect to it. The aromas of floral and violet notes were literally bursting from the glass. Juicy berries on the palate. The tannins are very firm, but in the background. The graphite and stone come in toward the finish, and it is a long, long finish. WOTN for me.

Minneapolis Wine Club: Bordeaux and Bordeaux Blends (Kevin and Vicki's): Nose of cedar, spice box, sweet red fruits, perfumed. Fairly well concentrated on the palate, some clay, but minimal earth noted. I don't think this is quite there yet, even with the 4 hours decant. Medium finish. I look for this to improve somewhat. Right now: 92+pts.

Cabernet Comparison (Exton, PA): Bought on release. Decanted 1 hour, small bottle. Dark blue, red rim. A textbook St Julien -- an elegant and rich combination of floral, leather, mineral and blackberry on the nose, confirmed on the palate with silky smooth length. A grippy finish shows it is still quite young, as expected. Try full bottles after 2014, a classic Las Cases.

Leoville Las Cases at My House: This was drinking surprisingly good and showed much better than the '01. The nose gives aromas of red fruit, oak, spice and smoke. Simple but very nice. On the palate this delivers good fruit flavors with balance and sweet tannin. Drinking pretty well and seemed surprisingly forward for such a young LLC.

when tk opened the btl.. thought i had brought the '99 LLC, but looking at the newer label, realised it's the '04.. oops!! initial nose: dark fruits, wood and smoke.. a brooding monster which later started to show lighter nose of currants, cloves, spice, minerals, coffee, herbs... later water-soaked-bread.. and a hint of the sweet nose i was expecting... but by then, the palate starting to turn sour from acid kicking in (after ard 6 hrs)...if there was a decline, i was hoping for a revival, but did not have enough time to follow through... palate/mouthfeel: tannins does settle down after sometime from decanting... at first was wondering if the '04 was drinkable.. but the initial harshness/disjointness and does become more palatable, elegant, exciting, complex and smooth (still slightly rough on the front.. ends sweetly)..nice length.. bottle was double decanted many times with new aerateur toy and in decanter for 6 hrs... accessable now, but should really wait.. nothing beats aging a wine naturally in cellar and i feel this wine will be very wonderful in say 5 yrs time (perhaps say 94-95 pts then).

First bottle of a case. Drank with anniversary dinner of lamb chops and potatoes au gratin. Obviously a young LLC, but the nose was beautiful and quite developed - smoke and green peppers. In the mouth, the wine is wanting for perhaps 5 more years of cellaring. It is a pretty wine now, but has not developed the body or complexity that it seems to have the potential for. For now, 91 to 92 points ,and I'll keep my fingers crossed that this develops into something really special.

(Drank at the Prime Rib.) Perfect Thanksgiving wine: it's big, wide open, and super generous. Smoke, cigar box, currant, cloves, roses, and TONS of spice on the nose, with more currant on the full-bodied palate. A few tannins clamp down in the middle, but they're sweet ones and will probably resolve with time. I'm amazed that this is drinking so well already. The medium-length finish rounds out a really bold, almost New-World sort of wine.

Cassis, minerals, sweet earth, and tart black plum. Some noticeable oak, too. The nose is almost mind-blowing; aromatic, floral, and a true representation of the fruit themes. My impression was that this will be relatively early drinking. The tannins were relatively soft; there was very good complexity here, but not the type of depth that makes you think you are missing something at this stage.

My first LLC....An amazing nose of sweet crushed dark berries, floral spices, nutty smoky exotic woods, pencil lead. Surprisingly med bodied in the mouth, thought it would be fuller, but still loaded with flavor. Fresh crushed blackberry/blueberry/cherry/currant fruit...exotic smoky woods, charcoal, leather, dusty dry spice. Silky smooth, yet firm tannin. Just outstanding flavors, and a pure joy to drink! Should get even better. If this '04 is this good...can't imagine what the '00 and '05 taste like! ++pts

Beautiful medium ruby red color. Cassis, black berry, cherry, pencil shaving and cold raw meat on the nose, fruit abounds with moderate oak and currant. Finish is none too spectactular. This was no better than the 2005 Boyd Cantec I had last night. I think this is very young though, so the potential still lies lurking in the bottle.

This wine was surprisingly open right off the bat and continued to evolve in the glass and the decanter over a 5-hour period. Initially a nose of plum, dark cherries, spice and tobacco smoke that only got stronger and evolved to include additional aspects of roasted espresso and earth as the night wore on. Powerful fruit and minerality on the palate with abundant yet barely noticeable silky-sweet tannins. This extremenly well-crafted wine had a totally seamless mouthfeel and a 30-plus second finish primarily of coffee and tobacco. Just delicious. A great-drinking young bordeaux with immense potential, it will hopefully be one of those wines that offers something great at every point of its evolution.

Decanted 4 hours. Sweet black currants, blackberry, cigar, smoke and vanilla. Silky but a bit lightweight on the palate. Finishes with a distinctly tobacco character and firm tannins. Was at its peak at about hour 6 then seemed to decline a bit as the evening wore on.

Nose: pepper, leather, forest floor, coffee, hints of violet
Notes: Ex-Chateau until 2022.

Black fruit, cassis, some pencil shavings and a little earthiness coming through. Still rather primary. Amazingly bright acidity which makes it really fresh. You will have finished your glass before you know it.

And on the second day? The nose has slightly maderised overnight. The palate is full, but it lacks complexity and is shorter than it should be.
There is something that is not quite right with this wine. The quality is unmistakably there, but the 2004 vintage seems to be holding it back.

Dark and deep in the glass; fairly good lift on the nose, with dark fruit and pepper, with pleasant but subdued aromatics (it needs more time in the decanter). Wonderful balance in the mouth, but just a little lacking in depth.
It is probably the vintage that is at fault.

Last time I tasted was 1 year ago. No changes. Big tannins that were somewhat tame but overwhelmed the fruit. Spent 1 hour in the decanter and did not change much if at all over 2-3 hours. Perhaps needs several more years or more decanter time. I think there is potential here.

a little bit like my 2017 note this was tough to love (still).

And it visually showed with some clear browning, classic 04 nose and palate (old school Bordeaux, a bit lean fruit), slightly rustic a la 04 vintage. I think the 04s are drinking now before they loose too much fruit. Classic claret.

Nice wine, Las Cases is consistent in my experience. This bottle was good and will continue to evolve, but not great. Drinking well now and tannic structure suggests it will hold for a while, but I dont think it improves much from here. Classic St Julien, vintage may be holding this wine back?

Marvelous.

Probably going to this too often, while waiting for "better" vintages. Gave it an all day decant, had it following a 2005 Hillside Select. This was old versus new world for sure. The Leoville has decades to go. It's certainly drinking ok now, has the structure to change and reward.

Obviously, you can tell that this is not a exceptional vintage, but it's still a very good mature classified growth. The nose had medium intensity animal aromas and the palate was balanced without being too complex. Overall, very nice.

Beautifully balanced and structured, blackberries, dark red fruits, cassis, crushed stones, and a decent finish.

A nice one.

+pts

Juicy berries on the palate. The tannins are very firm, but in the background. The graphite and stone come in toward the finish, and it is a long, long finish.

What a kaleidoscope of perfumed crushed berries, tobacco, cedar and just could not get enough. Medium bodied sweet tannins and a long 45 sec finish. Spectacular.

Soft and supple. Not closed at all. Lots of fruit, oak and herbaceous minerality. Good balance and well manered finish.

Bordeaux 2004 horizontal (Frank's Steakhouse, NYC): Floral nose, sweet, bright, clean. Classy with a long finish. High toned, but lacks weight. Very pretty.

Tasted blind. Somewhat thin and simple; drying tannins on the finish. Average.

Not sure if this is better than the 99. The 99 is drinking well now. This bottle needs a little more time - Will it have a little more fruit?
