  • Way past its prime. Not much to enjoy there.

  • Very difficult and old cork, had to strain and decant. Initially very tannic and almost irony with loads of Forrest floor. But it mellowed over celebratory Celeste to velvety tannins and a little dried cherry.

  • Still in very good shape. Fruit (brambly red fruit, stewed plum) on the wane but structurally no problems: surprisingly good body. Probably another decade still in it. Fun to try, open a bottle if you have one.

  • Color is youthful.
Lot's of tobacco and some dark cherry notes in a very composed nose.
Fruit is dried out with residual dried cherry.
Best 40 year old wine I've had all decade!

  • We did a vertical tasting of this 1975, along with a 1982 and a 1996. the `75 was the star. Opened in the cellar two hours before tasting, and brought out to warm up a bit 45 minutes before tasting. Beautiful cherry notes, did not taste faded at all. A great experience.

  • A wine that was officially beyond its time made it very well. Decanted after some skillful uncorking. Went at it in case it turned.

It started out with an interesting potential of a nose but was thin on taste and presence. Then unlike my other overdues that would go flat once exposed to air it just got better and better and better and held it all still after over 2 hours.

Every sniff and taste seemed to produce a different set of flavours ; from tobacco to black currant.

It almost gave me regret I shared the bottle with very special friends.

  • Went out to dinner at Nana's in Durham with my better half to celebrate a certain monumental birthday (rhymes with "shorty") and had brought a few bottles (Selosse V.O. and 1974 Chappellet Napa Cab) but found a little gem on the list in this wine at what seemed like a fair price. While the cork gave our waiter a bit of a fit, by the time he returned with the opened bottle and poured the first taste I was pleasantly surprised to see that the color was outstanding (bright ruby purple with no bricking) and the nose was giving off pleasant aromas of kirsch and classic Pauillac aromas of cedar, lead pencil and black currant. Predictably tannic and a bit thin upon the first taste, this begrudgingly filled out and evolved into a really pretty wine, with flavors to match the stunning nose on a medium-bodied frame. This was not nearly the wine of an '85 Lynch consumed a few weeks earlier but was in a really nice place now, and paired well with a wide variety of dishes (foie gras terrine, red snapper with wild mushroom and chervil, chestnut agnolotti with pork confit, and braised short ribs). This bottle was a base neck fill with a saturated but intact cork. Based on the small sampling of '75s I've had lately, I think many are coming around and should appeal to lovers of classic claret.
