Eighteen years in and this is my first taste of this vintage of Geezer. Popped and poured without any slow oxygenation. The first pour is brick at the rim, but amazingly showing a deep plum at the core. The nose wafts with coffee, Zin funk, molasses, tangerine zest, rhubarb, “Draper perfume”, and brown sugar. While not intense, the nose is both big and inviting. An intense cherry strikes on the attack while black currant and all the character of the nose washes in. The fruit is sweet, but not at all jammy. For an eighteen year old wine, it delivers incredible brightness and intensity. Everything about the wine is balanced. A tremendous joy to drink. A blend of a surprisingly low amount of Zin at only 66%, 17% Carignane and 17% Petite Sirah. Loads of small grains of sediment. 14.9% alc. With blackberry Zin beef short-ribs over mashed potatoes. The ribs - using a Ridge recipe recommendation - require 9 hours to prepare and includes a bottle of Zin. We sacrificed a bottle of Ponzo Zin. Highly Recommended.

Another great example of how Paul Draper makes age-worthy, relatively low alcohol and complex zin-based wines. Beautiful dark red cherry color. Rich, ripe nose of berries and baking spices. The palate yields multi-layered fruits and spices. Perfect balance. A very sophisticated wine that is much better at age 13 than at anytime sooner. Delicious!

Who says this wine is past its prime? Coming out of our passive cellar, this was all about plums, tar. earth and a hint of butterscotch with great acidity. Jean and I downed this with lamb in no time at all and it was as fresh at the end as it was at opening. I am in no hurry to open our remaining bottle, which I'd expect will be good for another 5 years or so.

From a 375. Shows heat and a massive dose of astringent lavender, giving it a nasty medicinal quality. The full body of overripe fruit of 3 years ago is thinning out as the fruit has matured. Some nice zinberry and dried herb notes. Absolutely no Geyserville or Ridge signature. Did not improve appreciatively with air. If you have 750s, drink 'em now before they get to this point!

A striking contrast to the 1995. This wine is distinctly riper and seems more mature. Although darker in color, the nose has a clear port-like edge to it, with pretty black fruit underneath. Ripe and almost flabby in the mouth, with spicy black fruit. This suffers from a lack of structure at this point, with the acidity almost completely resolved. The finish, however, props things up again with a nice burst of fruit. B

An entirely different bottle from the previous one -- this one is still mostly primary, rich, and fruity, without the properties that come with a Geezer's age. The last bottle I thought was close to its prime, for my taste. This one could have slept a few more years.

A beautiful Geyserville, with great depth. Primary aromas of "draper perfume," raspberries, plums; secondary notes of spice, wood, and lots of complex tertiary notes that keep evolving and delivering. Great acidity, wonderful balance. Drank alongside a 2007 Geyser, and the 2000 outshined the 2007 in every respect.

Ripe and full-bodied, with zesty wild berry, raspberry and blackberry fruit flavors that stay pure and focused if a bit raw and hot on the finish. Ruby-red. Roasted fruit notes complicated by hints of gingerbread, lead pencil and loam on the nose; slight suggestion of old wood. Sweeter and denser than the Mazzoni bottling, with an impression of lower acidity. Fuller in the mouth but perhaps not quite as fresh. But thick and rich, with very good texture and material (Varietals: 66% Zinfandel, 17% Carignane, 17% Petite Sirah) (ALC: 14.9 %)

11/21/08: Last bottle alas as this wine has only gotten better with each year. Still a youthful appearing dark red color with a nose of ripe red fruit, dark fruit, plume, earth, spice. The flavor is raspberry, current, light oak, spice, tobacco and vanilla. This is a well made medium bodied wine with lots of layering and structure and soft long tannins, good acidity, and a long finish with more fruit and spice.

Wow, facinating wine, I think this is why people like Zinfandel! Actually a mix of 66% Zinfandel, 17% Carignane, and 17% Petite Sirah. This is somewhere between a Pinot and a Merlot in terms of color and weight. Spicy, grapey nose, very alluring. On the palate this is silky, jammy and fruity without being too cloying. Long, spicy finish that keeps you coming back. Wow, this is fun stuff! Definitely a 90 point wine, maybe a bit higher. DAY 3: I opened up the remaining half bottle tonight to have a glass with Rob Meyer after dinner at The 5 Spot. This was *much* more alive than I expected, a bit softer, somewhat more open although the structure is almost more apparent. This is drinking every bit as well as it did two nights ago. Very nice juice!
