Still big and fruit dominant with some mocha and aromatic herbs. A couple of years since last bottle and this is drinking well. It has a lingering back of the tongue bitterness in the finishing acidity that puts me off, but not bad.
Dark fruit on the nose and palate - blackberry, plum, black cherry. Notable California fruit purity. The alcohol showed through too much for me on this. This is a wine for drinking after the meal on its own rather than with the meal. Drink now as I don't think this one is getting any better.
The wine is a bright ruby red color. The very nice nose features black raspberries, cherries, Asian spices, smoke, white pepper, spicy oak, and a touch of earthiness. This has a medium body with fairly solid tannins and good acidity. The palate has nice spicy red and black fruit with a bit of oak and some earthiness. The finish has decent length but does show a touch of excess oak and a bit of stems. With some air the excess oak and stems integrate and the wine adds a bit of weight. The fruit also becomes a bit more prominent especially on the backend and finish. I'd advise to decant for an hour or two or even better let it sleep for another year or two.
Opened for an hour, utilized a Vinturi - at first. Light maroon and a touch of garnet. Red fruit nose of raspberry and cherry, while also showing clay and flower shop complexity. Not full, more on the lighter side with a decent finish. The tannins are a little sharp with a touch of softness. Not on the same level as the '07 or '08, with this being more of a pizza wine. Not for the cellar and I would consume sooner than later. This is still an enjoyable Syrah, just not quite outstanding. Drink now - 2013.
A nice maroon color. Red and black fruits, chocolate, baking spices, alcohol, and white pepper on the nose. Medium to full body with solid, slightly gritty tannins and good acidity. A bit rough and rustic on the palate, but it seems like all the components are there and should come together with some cellar time. Don't touch for at least a year. Tough to score, 88 now, potential of low 90s in the future.
Popped and ran through the Vinturi. Maroon color, fairly dark but still opaque. Very aromatic. Red berries and chocolate predominate. Nose is almost too pretty to drink...almost. Wine is delicious. Good body, a thicker wine than you'd think. Cherries, dark chocolate and pepper on the palate.
DO NOT DRINK YET! Very nice wine, but jagged & not yet integrated. Has some Rhone characteristics. Plenty of fruit, but the oak & alcohol need to get into balance. Finish lingers on & on. This is a Syrah, but yet, I get some CdP Grenache character as well - surprising for me as this is my first try of this wine.
medium depth of color with strong aromas of milk chocolate, red berries, cinnamon and clove. Full body with a mushy lush texture with very little acid. The finish lingers a bit. Drink it now. A wine of good complexity yet lacking in structure.
Pinot-like color, see-through. Raspberries on the nose, mint. Heavy & viscous on the palate - unexpected with such a light color. Rich, dark fruit and meaty. Some bitterness which was mostly, but not completely gone the next day (vac-u-vin, not refrigerated). Cherries and lots of white pepper to a long finish. This is very nice - excellent QPR. Will save the rest for a few years.
Melville Winery Tasting (Melville winery tasting room): Tasted at the winery. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of licorice, camphor and wet stones. Flavors of licorice, currants and berries. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink over the short to medium term. 90
