2002 Château Mouton Rothschild

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (173) Avg Score: 93.6 points

  • 13% alcohol (it feels like a bit more). CS 77%, M 12%, CF 10%, PV 1%. Long cork of vg quality with minimal wine penetration except along a few outside streaks. Decanted 75 mn ahead. The colour is dark with marginal thinning but no bricking at the rim.
The nose is immediately enticing and complex with fresh dark fruit, ink and a smoky element that is more Lapsang than tobacco. The mouth adds opulence kept in check by superb acidity; the tannins are resolved but the wine does not lack grip. No direct perception of oak; menthol in the finish adds a fresh note. There is no doubt that this is a special wine with a great sense of completeness.
Highly successful, unlike the bottle of Lafite of the same vintage that we had a week ago.

  • Pnp. Medium dark plummy red in colour with no real colour change at the rim. Nose is full of tobacco, leather, dried red fruit, spice (curry?!), a touch of green pepper and pencil shavings. Medium bodied, very dry, chalky tannins, minerals and acid. Flavours of tangy dried red fruit, chalky minerals, tobacco and leather. Holding up well and definitely needs food. Only 91 on this showing.

  • So much more open and giving than almost any Mouton’s I’ve tried from either the 90’s or 00’s. Such a sleeper vintage! Silky, elegant, structured, great length, continued to evolve in the glass. Top notch Bordeaux.

  • This was much darker than the others, somewhat oaky, vanilla, pretty big, primary, with cedar, dark forest berries, underbrush, monolithic, big tannins. Decent now, should be much better in 5-10 yrs. DD Blind 1982-2005 Bordeaux 1st Growth dinner at BOA steakhouse.

  • Opened bottle 2h before consumption, cork 15% soaked, 13% Alc. From memory no notes taken.

Nose: Red and black cassies, good depth.

Palate: Very good balance, nice drinking flow, very good precision of fruit aromas, which are more on the red than on the black side, good complexity, depth and length. Overall a very good and very enjoyable wine. - But -

The WOW factor, the necessary depth and also the intense classic Pauillac notes, the animalic notes that I got to know in a really great Mouton year are not there. For 2002, an obviously smaller vintage, this is nevertheless an outstanding performance and wine, 93-94 Pts.

  • / 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
Color: Medium Ruby maybe leaning a little tawny , dark central core, definite bricking on the edge. Showing really well for 22 years. Maybe an ode to more Merlot in the blend?
Nose: Has a little bit of dusty/old library overtone, clear notes of currant, black fruits and flowers with a hint of cedar box in the background. Medium intensity... well balanced. No alcohol on the nose. Not as "big" as the other two but has an element of elegance to it that the younger sibling and SE don't have. The dabble of Petit Verdot may add some nuances and a bit of tannic backbone....
Palate: Surprising depth, complexity and overall balance. This is not a "bull-you-over wine" in any sense, like the nose this has a lot of secondary layered components. I think the structure without the weight stood out the most here.
Finish: This had the nicest finish of the 3, just a really well-balanced clean finish... not overly long but memorable nonetheless. Shows the pedigree of the property and high quality of winemaking.

  • decanted and enjoyed right away
A pretty Mouton with earth and cedar and faintly exotic spice on hand and backed by lucid cab fruit. I feel it is at its apogee and should be enjoyed now and would be gentle and not over decant

  • Smoke and spicy-fine tannins. Balanced, full bodied, saturated flavors, with a long finish. Well made, just not all that complex. Ready to drink now.

  • Quality cork. Medium dark ruby red with not much bricking at the rim. Pronounced pencil shavings on the nose with dried red and black fruits, spice and strong graphite. Medium bodied, super smooth and soft, fully integrated tannins, and the perfect counterplay between the fruit, acidity and slight astringency. Flavours of red licorice, red plum skins, cedar, graphite, and light camphor. Smooth, soft and long tapering finish. So elegant!

  • Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2002
Decant with small decanter for 30 mins, drink with good company in HK. :)
Excellent nose with multi layers, first with rich roped fruits, mainly black and blue, berries and cherries. Rich oak, light Asian spice, earthy and forest grounds. Entry is elegance, rich with layers emerging with every pour. Everlasting characters evolving. Finished with spice lingers within the throat for beyond a minute. Great wine though it's not a sparkling vintage! Cheers!

  • A quick impromptu note to compare the 2001 Lafite to the 2002 Mouton enjoyed over lunch today …

2001 Lafite was ready to go upon pop and pour. The nose was very pronounced within minutes. Black cherry, black berry. Palate was super elegant, alcohol was med-, acidity was med. Tannins totally resolved. Over the course of the lunch the wine remained strong yet subtle. I think this is prime drinking window.

2002 Mouton also pop and pout but took time to open up. Tannins still have a bite and also supported by slightly higher alcohol at 13%. More black fruit driven, and graphite. I believe this wine has plenty of life left to it and perhaps could do with a decant.

  • Mouton dinner (La Chaumiere in Georgetown): Youthful nose displaying concentrated black fruit, crème de cassis, blackberry, ink, dark chocolate, a hint of oak, lead pencil, dark spices and earth. There is a hint of green similar to the 19. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrate black fruit, rich and unctuous, good acidity, earthy mineral, coarse tannins and a medium to long ripe black fruit driven finish. This is a bit chunky and rustic which I often have found in the 02 Bordeauxs. This remains still very youthful and can easily improve for a couple more decades, gaining cedar and leather, and perhaps becoming more harmonious.

  • Very dark black ruby red grading to full garnet at the rim. Very complex nose! Lots of pencil shavings, charred smoky oak, herbal (but not green) notes, rich red and black fruits, and more. Many many layers of aromas. Medium full bodied, sweet/sour red and black fruit extract, elevated acidity, fully integrated, very fine tannins and a very dry, but not piercingly dry, finish. Well aged, dried red and black fruits, pencil shavings, charred oak, black tea, chalky minerals, leather, dried herbs and a finish of sour cherry. Dry, fine, elegant and super complex. Perhaps starting to dry out just a little bit. Still very elegant.

  • Very elegant nose with some dark berries and soft leather and sweet tobacco notes. On the palate a nice mixture of red and dark fruits. Some nice herbal and menthol notes in the background. Beautiful tertiary notes like forest floor and mushrooms. Medium (+) bodied with a medium acidity. Less fruit complexity than the 2000 Pavie but an incredible overall balance! Super elegant and fine structure. This wine shows why it’s worth being patient. It’s drinking so beautiful now. The finish is long and elegant. (IG)

  • Stored in a climate-controlled cellar since purchase upon release. Initially after pulling the cork, the nose leaped from the glass to showcase aged aromas of smoky tobacco, herbs, damp earth, leather, dark fruits (e.g., blueberry, boysenberry), and a hint of menthol. Big and rich in the mouth, but it promptly retreated into a shell after 20 minutes. We decanted, and it re-emerged 2 hours later to reveal the extent of the tannic/acidic structure, but with the hollow middle often associated with the vintage. After 3 hours, a totally different picture emerged: while the nose all but disappeared at this point, the mid-palate came to life with lush, suave, and complex flavors of red fruit (strawberry, cherry), licorice, spice, and brown sugar cascading across the palate into a particularly long and explosive finish. The best 2002 I've had thus far, but based on this bottle at least, a 3 hour minimum decant was necessary to get the best of what it had to offer, which was impressive!

  • Clean on the nose with dried red and black fruit, earthy spice tones, and some slight bitter/savory notes as well.
On the palate this is medium body, medium acidity, and medium tannin. Still quite young but showing promise. Needs to shed a bit more of the awkward secondary bitter flavors.
    Try again in 5+ years.

  • Healthy ruby. Nose of forest floor, dark berries, and graphite. Terrific texture in the mouth, really voluptuous. Awesome length. I loved this wine. Such finesse.

  • The bottle is heavy, but not ostentatiously so. Pretty dull drawing by Ilya Kabakov on the label, let us hope that it is not a reflection on the wine! 13% alcohol. CS 77%, M 12%, CF 10%, PV 1%. Impeccable long cork of superb quality with no wine penetration whatever. Decanted 75mn ahead. Dark colour with no sign of ageing.
The nose is glorious with a harmonious mix of fresh dark fruit, tobacco, ink and a pleasant herbaceous component; I could smell this all day. The oak is perfectly integrated in that it adds richness without calling attention to itself. A textbook Pauillac in its glorious early adulthood. Luckily, the mouth is just as good with flavours that match the aromas, and a precision that is not so frequent in Bordeaux; menthol in the finish giving a lovely uplift. Classy and harmonious without a doubt, with freshness ahead of opulence.
Even though I went to some trouble with the food match (rack of lamb), the wine revealed itself fully only afterwards, on its own.
Now to the thorny question of value for money; well, I paid around 80€ for this bottle around 2004 as a result of a combination of factors, two of them being the bad reputation of the vintage (quite wrongly as far as Pauillac and St Julien are concerned) and the decision by the kingmaker critic of the time (what's his name again?) not to attend the primeur tastings. Even at that price, I am not sure that I would buy again; as for paying the IdW-quoted 434€, you have got to be joking! The point is that the wine is excellent, but it is not revelatory. I am not even sure if it is the best Bordeaux that I ever tasted. Probably in the top 10 though.
Delighted to have tasted this wine and I enjoyed every mouthful.

  • 2002 Bordeaux 20 years on tasting (Fribourg): 2002 Bordeaux 20 years on tasting. Key takeaways: 1/ 31 out of 32 wines were in flawless condition which indicates either luck or less bottle variation in the vintage, 2/ On average still early days with the fruit predominantly primary, 3/ solid hedonistic quality with only few laggards, but also no blow-outs, 4/ structures built on both tannin and acidity, but common mid-palate weakness, 5/ best wines were Valandrau, Palmer and a surprise underdog Lagrange (all 95), 6/ biggest disappointment was a cooked Figeac (87). More comments and full list of wines included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Black coffee notes, slightly peppery with a distinctly herbal character of dried herbs and a mixed berries fruit profile. Overtime developing stronger coffee notes. A juicy palate, bold and muscular, but not what you would call impeccable balance. Without the last issue, this could have been a contender for wine of the vintage – maybe there’s upside with another few years in the bottle. It’s been more than 3 years since I had this last and happy to see this has come some way since with surprisingly consistent notes.

  • Decanted for four hours prior to drinking. In a word, unbelievable. Drank side by side with a 1969 mondavi and served with seared A5 Wagyu. This was the star of the show. The wine was incredibly powerful and the tannins cut the richness of the meat beautifully without being harsh or overpowering. Still plenty of fruit, but forest floor and truffles started to take center stage as the bottle opened up. Finish lasted for minutes. Has years and years to go.

  • 2002 Jane Anston:
Harvest began September 24th. Mixed quality, with another year where September saved a difficult early season after a cool July and rainy August. Cabernet Sauvignon did better than Merlot, but most wines are ready to drink. Mouton Rothschild made one of the best examples of the vintage, and generally those who were able to wait until mid-October to bring in the last grapes did the best.

  • Mouton 2002 - not quite what I was expecting, underwhelming for the price. Vintage maybe ?

The wine showed at early stage of tertiary downfall, only after 20 years.
No palatable faults to be found, not oxidized, corked or heatstroke.

Very strange - assume previous ownership must not have been optimal on this one.

  • Dégustation de 30 millésimes de Mouton Rothschild

    2002

Beau fruit mure riche et a la fois croquant. Un nez impeccable, tannins souple, un nez qui fait penser au Merlot mais en bouche le Cabernet-Sauvignon est bien présent et élégant, un Mouton a point maintenant, sublime !

  • Gruaud Larose 1986-Mouton-haut-brion 1996- 2022-Petrus 1995

    Gruaud Larose 94/95
We drank it a bit too warm, but here again an astonishing balance and equilibrium of the wine where the nose and mouth did show some age, but nothing was unpleasant or already fleeting! Nicely round, you could smell and taste a warm year, alcohol was still present in a pleasant way, tobacco, leather in the nose, it was for a long time the best wine of the evening compared to mouton 22 and haut-brion 2005,

De Haut Brion 1996 90/100..? , which by the way was overripe and had plums in the nose ! Wonder if it was the wine or the cellar that decided it so… Disappointed ,

Mouton 2022 : 92/100 . Mouton had a very nice nose with mint and eucalyptus again, but the mouth had too much acidity! Really out of balance! Maybe with age he would come into balance even more, but then the nose can also disappear,

Petrus 1995 : 99/100 And then came the surprise , we thought we were on 90 or 98 , warmth in the nose , I hadn't smelled the merlot and thought we were on cabernet ! strange, this got better over time, my neighbor had smelled Merlot and Pumpkin ! strong ! What I sometimes have with Petrus is that power sometimes too much; but that
was not present here, what a balance, what finesse, what a wine! in the nose it had smoked meat, leather and still some dark fruit, but nothing that made the wine unstable , why I was on cabernet was because of the finesse, and the wine was again long…on the mouth, what a beauty ! !

  • Bordeaux 2002 First Growth Tasting 22 January 2022
Our #5 preference in the lineup, but still much enjoyed. The showy intentions of the estate are very clear with its taller, heavier bottle, its bright art label frontage and extensive back label, but also the wine itself. With some exotic hints on the nose and more obvious brambly fruit and oak treatment on the palate, it's more flamboyant. We rated it #5 as we felt that in pursuing more showiness it gave away some of the seamless elegance of the others.

  • Not as good as previous bottles. Tighter, younger with more prominent oak tannin. Still a well made wine, lush and balanced with great promise. Decanted two hours. Try again in 2025.

  • Maybe i was expecting too much, but i thought this was slightly underperforming, with thinnish and acidity not balanced by fruit. Tannins enough and maybe it will reward those with more patience than i had, but i'm 75 years old and cannot push the envolope too much! Good enough but did not make my gray head spin.

  • Decanted 3hr. Deep intense nose with blackcurrant, pencil shavings, a little aniseed, thyme. Palate is full, rich, round - medium fine tannins, great acidity balance. Clear herbs on palate - rosemary, thyme - lots of blackcurrant. Feels a little tight still and could certainly age well from here. Delightful. Real class. Drink now-2035.

  • After several hours this Mouton is a nice mature and harmonious wine. This would not rank in the top Mouton's by a stretch, or even top vintages of the 2nd Grand Cru's, but for the vintage it is a very decent and pleasurable Mouton. Little bit surprised about the 97+ scores here after having had this wine for a dozen times by now. At similar maturity I would recommend the LLC 1990, Lynch Bages 1990, Poyferre 1990 and for sure Pichon Baron 1990/Montrose 1989/Palmer 1989 for less money and substantially more complexity and sumptuous pleasure.

Mijn wijn! Algemeen / potentieel: 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Smaak / Afdronk: 17 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 93/100

Color: Deep opaque dark red with no trace of discoloration at the edges. Aroma / bouquet: On first impression, this wine presents itself as tough and powerful, with seriously earthy and thorough show. After some time aeration, the wine opens and the more tertiary and refined aromas are released including cedar wood, sweet condiment, dried dates and soft spice cake. Taste / Finish: This 2002 Mouton also initially presents itself on the palate especially as tough, earthy and powerful, after which the tertiary aromas are released. First tough, then soft and refined. My wine! Overall / potential: 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma /bouquet: 12 + Taste / Finish: 17 + Overall / potential: 9 = 93/100

  • (Bordeaux 2002 tasting)
Full, classic, lovely nose. Cedar, black fruit and some coffee toast perfectly integrated. Almost aromatic. Luxurious.
Medium-fullish, fullish palate. Ripe, but not altogether mature tannins. Dense and with very good concentration. Very Pauillac. Very classic. Long and concentrated.
2002 is without doubt the weakest vintage of the 2000's. And more fullish and rich than this Mouton it is hard to imagine. Very appealing. Delicious now, can be cellared further.

  • 2/6, good cork, decanted 1 hour.
Youthful appearance - deep ruby core, narrow rim. Nose shows deep, dark fruit, cedar, some exotic spice. Medium bodied, blackcurrant fruit to the fore, some nice cedary complexity, touch of meatiness, this is elegant and composed with impressive depth, fine tannins, fresh acidity on an extended finish. Really delicious, drinking well but no hurry.

  • The last of three bottles and while I enjoyed the first two immensely, was underwhelmed with this last one. After a 3.5 hour decant, the forest floor, saddle and musk was a little to predominant. Maybe its that i've been enjoying more of the fruit forward Napa wines of late, but this just didn't work at the level I was expecting.

  • 2hr decant and enjoyed over next 2 hours with some steaks. The nose is intoxicating. Tons of red fruit with lots of florals, green pepper, fresh herbs and a good cigar right out of the humidor. This wine jumps right out of the glass. Brick red with strong orange hue on the rim. Medium bodied with. Tannins have integrated well but still a little grip here when I was hoping for a little more elegance. Terrific long finish. Really enjoyed this especially for the vintage . Wish I had another to revisit in 3-4 years.

  • Mother's day eve wine and isolation open that bottle wine combined. Decanted for about an hour. Quite a bit of sludge in the bottom of the bottle. Nice and deep ruby red heart transitioning to more garnet at the rim. Some bottle funk when initially decanted. That quickly blew off to reveal a rarefied melange of pencil lead, tobacco and cigar box notes overlying shy black currant and blue plums in the middle and then a more feral and earthy base note comprised of dried mushroom, loam, spice and caramelized beef. So many elements to the bouquet that blend seamlessly together over many, many layers and beckon you to delve deeper to tease them apart and discover more scents! It smells so amazing, I'm almost afraid to taste it! Much younger tasting than I would have expected. Brisk acidity, medium bodied, fine tannins and a dry, but not too dry, finish. The flavours are more in the dried red fruit spectrum. Dried strawberry, cherry and cranberry interwoven with pencil shavings, spice and strong tea. With food (rack of lamb) the flavour transforms into more purple and black fruits and the body fills out more. It really comes together then! Smooth, but with underlying tannins and acid to provide classic structure. Right at the end there is just the slightest hint of a green bark note that freshens it up. Stellar!

  • Decanted 4 hours. Tasted alongside Lafite 2002. Clear orange notes on rim. Ripe nose of light blackcurrant & redcurrants, gentle bramble, light lavender, fennel and a light fresh acidity. Palate has a good weight, but not too heavy; has a little tannic grip, some clear aniseed as well as gentle dark blackcurrant. Not too persistent on aftertaste but has a lovely balance and freshness. Clearly drinking very well now. Drinking now-2027.

  • An excellent wine but ranked 4th on the night by me, behind 89 Lynch-Bages, 1998 L'Evangile and 1997 Chateau Montelena. Slow ox'ed for approximately 9 hours, found this still a bit tannic and blocky, good herbs and cassis on the palate, moderate fruit and a bit short on the finish. Thus, ranked 4th out of 5. Excellent.

  • Minimal decant, this gem was a (very) late entrant from an attendee’s locker to keep the night rolling and we are all the better for it. Fragrant and full nose of red cherries evidencing its seeming youth. On the palate, notes of black currant and vanilla and were delivered in a wonderfully smooth and delicious manner. This wine was a “head-turner” forcing you to double-check the vintage, etc to seer into your brain the bottle that just deliver this joy. To quote the donor (whom I accidentally recorded giving this impromptu review): “that Mouton is amazing, that shit is good, that juice is way better than I was expecting.” Yep.

  • Mouton Rothschild vertical 1878-2002 (Old Swiss House, Lucerne): The herbs are strong in this one, probably most pronounced in this vertical. Lacking intensity, however, maybe in a bad spot currently. On the palate quite rough if not wild. More bottle age will be clearly welcome to soften the edges.

  • Mouton Vertical (Lucerne): Last wine of the evening with little detailed notes taken. It had some green elements, herbs on the nose and palate which give the wine good freshness (eventually not totally ripe tannins?). Otherwise quite smooth structure but with overall little excitement and limited complexity. But judging from other reviews here, the wine should have been decanted for quite some time to open up (our wine was double decanted and then slow-oxed for 3 hours). 91 point experience but with a low confidence level.

  • A very interesting wine. First - after 2 hours decant - very fruity, spicy, thyme. After a few hours liquorice, tobacco, coffee. Long finish.

  • Decanted for two hours before serving. Nose blasted out black currants, vanilla, herbs and tobacco. Palate was ripe and juicy in perfect harmony. Long finish with lingering after-taste. Mouth coating. Great wine for the 02 vintage. Drinking well as a young bordeaux. It will continue to age very well.

  • Double decanted a couple of hours in advance.
Dark ruby with separation at the edges, lightest browning.

Nose light cedar and forest, hint of anise, a bit closed initially but did open up some with time.

Palate deep, textured in the mouth, earthy with prominent graphite/pencil shavings, barest hint of green, some herbal flavor with time; tannic finish. Still a brooding beast, the fruit is still dense and coiled, just getting some secondary flavors to my palate. Striking effort for what was reportedly a lesser-touted vintage in Bordeaux, but a baby -- could see this wine going for decades yet. Many thanks MrBry83 for the treat. 94 pts with upside

  • Did not have time to decant and so we may not have seen it at its best. Still, a very pleasant wine. Smooth and well balanced with notes of cassis, cigar box and graphite. Feels like it is nicely in its drinking window but has at least 10+ years to go. A really good effort considering the vintage.

  • Tasting: What a pleasant surprise. Started out a bit closed (93-94 pts), but after an hour or so this wine really opened up. Better than the 2001, but I would not have guessed Pauilliac.
My fourth vintage of MR: 2001, 2002, 2008 and 2013. The 2008 has so far been the best wine.

  • My friend had this in his work’s Christmas hamper a couple of years ago.
An absolutely fabulous wine. When popped we poured two small glasses, just to sample.

Dark red with a hint of light red on the rim. The nose was something special; the usual Bordeaux, but with an extra dimension, we were blown away. We tasted it and it was lovely, but this clearly needed some air. So we poured two normal glasses and waited about an hour.

This wine is just amazing. You really know you've got something special in your glass.
On the nose lots of balanced wood, pencil shavings, soft ripe red fruit, a gentle touch of vanilla and leather, all beautifully integrated.
On the palate this has those same notes, and gentle, yet present tannins.
We had this with a beautiful ribeye on the bone. It held up very well. Afterwards we had truffle infused ewe’s cheese with it, a very good pairing too.
This wine is not quite mature yet, but an absolute joy to drink if you give it some air in the glass/decanter.
    A very special treat! I’d buy a case...if I could afford it!

  • Decanted for 2 h. The fruit is surprisingly primary, hints of cigar box and cedar. Elegant and classic in style with lots of potential, but a bit closed at the moment. Will definitely improve with further cellaring. Will not open next bottle before 2025!

  • Leather, smoke, and tobacco leaf are dominant on the nose. Slight green pepper and eventually some black pepper. The occasional graphite or biscuit note could have led me to St. Julien rather than Pauillac. Palate has currant, blackberry, tobacco, bitter chocolate, and some spice. Slightly sweet. Very soft texture. Medium finish. Not one of the great Moutons but a phenomenal effort for this unripe vintage. This could easily be a ripe St. Julien rather than an unripe Pauillac. Shows the quality of the first growths and validates their financial value. Slight room for further development, but there isn't the structure here for long-term evolution.

  • I would rate it 94+. Strong notes of leather, smoke and cigar box. Have noticed how much it's similar to other high end French wines. Good wine, but not worth the price.

  • I find this wine a bit hard to rate. Is it 94 or 96 points? It is a classic, sophisticated BDX. Not very avantgarde, just plain simple quality. Weak vintage, but quality from A-Z. Tasted 3 bottles with friends. Everyone loved it.

Tasted opposite 1995 Margaux. I found this more interesting. And I am a Ch Margaux Lover. Best 2002 I have ever tasted.

  • Decanted for two hours and forget what Neil Martin at Wine advocate says, this wine is special now and has a long life. Aromatically a wow that with the first taste, you know why first growths are more expensive and worth it. Cost is relative since I paid $129 for this wonder wine in 2003. Cassis, blackberry, licorice and fall forest cedar waft the mouth feel to wonderment.

On the palate juicy dark and red berry fruits, a touch of not unpleasant bell pepper and sweetness. Classical and elegant. Good acidity, chocolate and length. • Decanted and taken to dinner out: very deeply colored; huge, solemn nose of blackberry and cassis, slightly smokey, ripe and extracted. A huge monster on the palate; still a bit too surly. But very serious wine.

  • Decanted 1/2 an hour, good cork. Deep ruby core, pale garnet rim. Nose is youthful with pure blackcurrant fruit, touch of gravel and tobacco, some cedar with time in glass. Medium/full bodied, lovely pure blackcurrant fruit, touch of tobacco, vanilla and spice, very fine, even soft tannins make this very approachable, deep and long with fresh balancing acidity. Lovely wine, drinking now but should also make old bones.

  • Some say: drink great wines in small vintages and small wines in great vintages...
This is a great example of how you can have a spectacular 1er grand cru without mortgaging your home... Wine is still very young and primary, plenty of blackberry at the first smell, tannic mouth. Already enjoyable will probably last a few more decades

  • from magnum. decanted 4-6 hours.

generally backwards, closed, shut down. the quality is evident from the strict structure and tannin. however it's not particularly pleasant at this stage. there's fruit but it's being strangled by the tannin atm.

let's all be patient and look again in about 20 years.

  • 78/12/9/1 Cabernet/Merlot/Cab Franc/ Petit Verdot. Decanted and poured, tasted over the course of two hours. Immediately shows it's pedigree on the nose, beautiful bouquet of dried red flowers, forest floor, black plum pith, fresh lavender, herbs. Palate soft and balanced, layers to match the nose, tannins show power and elegance, and then the finish is superb, showing new layers 10 seconds after and lasting 30-45 seconds. 30 minutes after decanting, it opened up more and showed even better. Probably would have needed several hours after that if there's another level to reach. Fantastic wine, not quite that "best ever" feeling that you might get from a special vintage, could be more mid-palate depth if you want to split hairs. Overall though, worthy of it's reputation and the best of the three First Growth bottles that I've tasted.

  • Decanted for four hours and this beauty is balanced, smooth and became richer and more complex as the dinner progressed. Black fruit, licorice, cassis, cappuccino, sweet forest cedar, currant, and a bit of graphite evolve into a classically structured, exquisitely balanced, and gorgeous wine that is wonderful now and will remain so for many decades.

  • Enjoyed with my wife on a cold Saturday night. Decanted 4 hours; opened up more by the minute, would decant longer next time. Still young and tannic at the beginning, smoothing out the longer it was opened. Very balanced at this time even though young. I am glad I have more to try over the years as this looks like one that will keep getting better.

  • Pre-New Year with Robin 2014: Deep+ black-crimson to the garnet rim. Penetrating nose of cassis, blackcurrant, graphite, dark chocolate 90%, some coffee and smoke of oak too.
Full-bodied, velvety texture with wonderful depth of flavour and a seamless, yet firm tannin. This is a powerful, brooding wine with good concentration, guts and opulence to it. Certainly complex and layered on the palate, there is plenty of black fruits, melted chocolate, and more. It has a forward slant to the wine and whilst there is density, it isn't as dense as I expected. I also found it to be drinking very well now but will be interested to see how it will develop going forward.

  • OJH Party (Racquet Club Chicago): Forward and full nose of dark fruit, dark chocolate, some earth and cassis. This all carried through to the palate that was rich and round, almost modern. Plenty of depth and while this is drinking well right now, it will evolve. Nice surprise.

  • Birth year wines (plus some extra's) (@ JB): The bouquet is a feast with dark cassis, luxurious oak, cedar, cigar box, smoke and graphite. Same on the palate; beautiful cassis and beautiful toasted oak flavors. Luxury in a glass. It has that 2002 bitterness, but overall this is a real pleasure! Early maturity now and probably still great until well into the 2020's. 94 for an off vintage is a pretty high score, but the wine deserves it.

  • This bottle has been open for 5 hours. Medium-dark ruby/purple color. Super-classic nose of black currant/cassis, earth/graphite, blackberries, flowers, some eucalyptus and some forest floor. On the palate there are mainly black fruits again (cassis, blackberries), graphite/lead pencil, some licorice and eucalyptus. Medium-full body with medium-high tannin (silky) and a medium(+) acidity. Very good length. This is a very classic and elegant Mouton-Rothschild with a lot of finesse. With a few more years of bottle-age it will be even more breath-taking.

  • Post CNY wine tasting dinner (Singapore): Fourth red flight. Finally the Bordeaux. Similar to how I remember the last bottle of 2000 Bon Pasteur, the Hosanna showed again the excellency that was achieved in 2000 in Pomerol. A rather modern style of Bordeaux with rich dark fruit, dark chocolate and still a fair bit of oak it certainly has the structure to continue developing further. Long finish. The 2002 Mouton was obviously very different given the vintage and I suppose also the style of the Chateaux. Dark, still very tightly wound this was very elegant and noble. I was wondering whether it also could use a few more years but perhaps it will only turn out more austere a few years down the road, which is just how it started to show when I got back to it at the end of the dinner. Hosanna 93-94, Mouton 92

  • At a tasting. Medium ruby. Very expressive nose of black current, eucalyptus, earth and oak. Very Medoc on the aromatic side, complex and if you like Bdx, this is exactly how it should be. Delicate and soft entry, silky tannins and outstanding balance. This is not a block buster but very well done. No unripeness or greenness, neither a hollow mid palate as in so many Bdx 2002. Recommended.

  • This was a "de luxe" pirate in an Italy tasting. Medium, dark ruby color. Jumps out of the glass with black currant, dark berries, minerality (earth, graphite), some eucalytpus, some forest floor and oak. Medium body, still pretty high tannins (but silky) and a medium acidity. This is a Mouton that's all about elegance and finesse, not a blockbuster-style. Long finish. The only thing that keeps me away from scoring it even higher is that it lacks the density/concentration of the really big vintages. But overall a stunningly beautiful Mouton-Rothschild from a difficult vintage.

  • This mouton rocks! Bought it based on the decanter tasting, and they were right. Lots of truffles, decadent earth/forest floor aromas along with graphite/Pauillac qualities. Flavor is sublime and full of black cherry fruit with mineral and tobacco accents. Easily the wine of the vintage. If we're bit more concentrated or more time would have scored higher. Bought two more bottles cause it was that good! Will improve with age and decanting

  • This was a treat as First Growths are not popped that much these day. This is coming along nicely, with tobacco, cedar wood, cassis and earthy, forest floor notes continue developing. It's not the most concentrated vintage of Mouton, but it's starting to soften and fill out, while adding complexity and charm. Produced from a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, I'd give it another 5 - 8 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 2 decades.

  • Opened and decanted. Color - Deep ruby with no evidence of bricking as of yet. Nose - Immediately upon decanting, a classic, but not overwhelming Paullic nose dusty with cassis, tobacco, and some leather. Within 30 minutes, the leather had virtually diisappeared and and the tobacco was receeding with the fruit dominating and becoming more aromatic. Continued to develop over the course of the next 3 hours and perhaps it might have continured longer if there were any left. Palate - very good fruit driven beginning, mid, and finish with not a hard edge to be found. Tannins were smooth and round. Long lingering finish that would be absoultely dellicious with roasted lamb.

  • La Commanderie de Bordeaux à Vancouver - 2002 Horizontal (Blue Water Cafe): Medium red. Most complex nose yet with beautiful dark fruit, spice, licorice and red currants. Palate was equally as nice with plum and cherry fruit with powdery tannins, abundant and well balanced acidity and a long finish. This is really nice for the vintage and wine of the night for sure, even admitted by the Mouton haters. While very nice now, I’d give this 5 years. Excellent. 92+

  • Acker BYO - Chicago (Sepia - Chicago, IL): A step down from the 2001 and a major step down from the 2000. The acidity on the wine seemed to outpace the fruit and it came across a little too shrill for me. There was still some great material behind the acid - have to wonder what will wine out? • One of the few wines I've had that tasted like a first growth. Probably won't be a long ager, but drinking well today. Had that tertiary tobacco, cassis nose. Even on the palate had enough going on. Had good balance and texture. Silky but medium bodied. Surprisingly drinkable. Maybe it's the 2002 quality, coupled with a good wine? Usually 2000's Bordeauxs don't show this much development. Had it at Ruth's Steakhouse with some clients.

• At Restaurant 'van Vlaanderen' next to Latour 2002 (blind tasting) - both bottles were opened 8 hours before tasting. Dense colour. Complex wine, fruit driven with berries, leather and rather soft (some Left bank characteristics) and mellow especially in the finish. Very enjoyable at the moment (Quite a difference with the Latour!) but will probably be more interesting in the future. Tannins and astringent in the end.

  • Spectacular aromatics right off the bat; tobacco and cedar around a core of deep cassis and plummy fruit with sandalwood and other spicy notes giving it an exotic flair. A little tight on the palate initially, but after an hour or so in the decanter it fleshes out quite nicely, showing youthful, primary fruit and some spicy and cedary accents. There's a sense of incredible finesse and grace here, it's not a heavyweight and conveys flavour with a great deal of precision, elegance and restraint, finishing very long.

  • You can almost 100% sure this is a first growth, by the color, the weight, the smell. Dark purple in color, nose of generous amounts of creamy confit fruits, perfectly balance and at the same time very young(rich tannins) very fresh. Wait for 10 to 15 years.

Good complexity showing in the wine even at its young stage. Definitely needed the decanting time. A nice seared steak really made the wine sing. Still has it's best days ahead of it.

  • Very young, and tannic. Dense purple color with hints of pencil leads, little cassis, but overall packed. Big and concentrated in mouth and pretty sweet and oak oriented which probably makes it a little accessible even at this age. Yum Yum

  • Crimson in color. Low rim variation. Nose of Oak, Blackberry. Taste of Oak, Blackberry. Medium/Full bodied. Angular texture. Medium finish. Much too young but wanted to try a bottle. Oak dominates the nose but the Mouton fruit is lurking underneath. Similar structure revealed on the palette with what seems to be a high level of alcohol for Mouton. Pleasing for the vintage and not a bad purchase at these prices.

  • Old World nose of a little underbrush, #2 lead pencil, and oak spices. Nice solid core of currants, cassis, and black raspberries that allows a seamless transition to integrated tannins. • The nose of this wine was packed with pencil shavings front and center, with dark berry and chocolate aromas underneath. The palate had cassis, earth, and cedar-like flavor. Medium bodied with a medium-long finish. This was much more approachable than I thought it would be at this stage, and since I don't drink a lot of Bordeaux, this was fun to drink with a group. • Something of a disappointment. Drank this after opening a bad 89 Beaucastel (oxidized). This was supposed to redeem the night, and it didn't. Nose showed hints of berry, new wood, eucalyptis, and loam. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, with fine tannins, and ripe fruit and mild hints of crushed granite. The forepalate was making a promise that the hindpalate could not deliver. The hindpalate was weak, and tasted of earth. Nothing else. Not a long finish either. The wine was excellent, however. The cork was pushed just a bit (see: http://picasaweb.google.com/dpiette/MoutonRothschild2002Dinner# ) and I was very worried. I have one more bottle of this and will probably drink it sooner rather than later.

The color was spectacular - very dark. Great nose out of the bottle. Dark red fruits, chocolate. Tasted of leather and chocolate - long finish, a little sharp at the end.

  • Tasting Of Chateau Mouton Rothschild (At The Wine Summit 2008 – Lake Louise, Alberta): Late Indian Summer – harvested between 9/30 and 10/10 – final blend 77% CS, 12% M, 10% CF and 1% PV – 13% Alc.
Another very dark wine – deep ruby; more oak in the aromas, with some floral scents – black fruit; elegant entry – lighter bodied than the 2003; good acidity – refined tannins – plenty of sweet edged black currant fruit, almost chewy; finishes rather quickly, but without any adverse characteristics

  • There were many amazing moments at the 2008 Post Hotel Wine Summit in Lake Louise Alberta Canada, but one of the highlights was a standing room only technical tasting of nine vintages from Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The charismatic and entertaining Adrien Laurent, North American Export Manager for Baroness Rothschild led us through this barrage of big Bordeaux and explained label by label nuances of the various artists who have graced the labels over the years. My first observation was how all nine glasses appeared the same dark inky purple beautiful color. The 2002 was also incredible. I got a cedar closet aroma, gentle smoke like a block away from your favorite BBQ joint, that first smell when you open an expensive dark chocolate, and herbs like thyme or oregano still on the vine. Once in the mouth I knew I would not be rinsing and spitting this one. Jammy, pepper, indiscernible fruits, Big bodacious and delicious yet so very young. I will share one of these with my 11 year old son when he turns 21.

  • Degrezia, NYC again. Smokey cassis and licorice with stong black fruit, yes this full bodied purple monster is tannic but after three hours of decanting before we drank a single drop, this wine became domesticated and ever so drinkable if you like your ladies rich and strong.Drank a 1982 Ducru Beaucaillou to start a Monbousquet blanc with the Bronzino and then savored this classic till we finished our cheeses and cappuccino.

  • Very much enjoyed this bottle even if still evidently too young. Great nose fill with black fruits, coffee with a hint of vanilla. Medium bodied, great fruits & oak.....still rather tannic which got much better after about an hour or so. Good finish...

  • My 1st testing compares with Shafer Hillside 1998 in 2006, nothing to loose. Hillside was better.

    Today, 2nd testing together with Haut-Brion 1994, Margaux 1989 and Le Pin 1990. How's pity Mouton 2002 ?

It declares clearly Second Growth, easy delicious, oaky, new world Rolland style and... less power than last time....

We...We can not finished the bottle...we, 5 people, will leave the left to drink another day.

Last week, I was thinking about bringing it to drink with Screaming Eagle 2002, how lucky I am about testing it today.

So... I have to give my regard to Pavie 2000 instead of Mouton 2002. Let's see !!

Recommend : Don't bring Mouton to drink along with others 1st Growth !! ( It's really great when meets the 2nd Growth )

    A voice from Mouton's lover : )

ps 1. after 24 hours, it becomes a beautiful soft and smooth. That's much better than yesterday... 94/100...

ps 2...I have a chance to test twice " tha Great white wine made from Merlot 2006 " comes from Ticino of Switzerland.

...Wonderful scents of raosted Coffee...medium toasted...seductive...sexy and very delicious...

...and this wine inspired the name " Petrus Blanc " appears in my vision...

...In the future, when Petrus has 100% white Merlot from the 2nd Vin. It must be one of the best Bordeaux white wine...

...Haut-Brion Blanc wouldn't be the one and the only anymore...

    ...Petrus Blanc 2008...The Debut Vintage...nearly can't wait...

  • Tasted double blind. On the nose, well-integrated aromas of chocolate, earth and light herbs. On the palate, gorgeous texture and balance, with delicate, dusty fruit. I guessed that it could be Lafite, but I was thinking it was older than 2002, that's for sure. This is much better than the 2002 Lafite, by the way (IMHO).

  • This is a very nice Mouton. Complex bouquet with luxurious oak, lead pencil and cassis. The acidity is a bit thin and the tannin different in a way I cannot describe. The overall experience however is a beautiful and complex wine, although by far not as overwhelming as Margaux 2002.

  • Excellent fruit, quite closed, highish acidity, ripe style. An excellent wine from an underrated vintage.

  • 2002 Mouton, 2002 Almaviva, 2001 Baron Rothschild Pauillac & 2003 Baron Rothschild Pomerol (Monterrey, Mexico): Had at HEB's Barons de Rothschild tasting at Pangea.

I was surpised at how relatively approachable this wine is showing at this early age. I expected an impenetrable monster given the vitage's characteristics, but this was enjoyable. The nose was a bit subdued, but offering black fruits and deep minerality. The palate was medium to full bodied, offering firm but not over bearing tannin. Maybe this proves winemaking is much better today than 20 years ago.

  • Absolutely brilliant. Complex, elegant, powerful. A incredible length. I'm usually no fan of Pauillac but had this for the second time and was -again- really impressed. Need to get more of this.

  • Decanted for an hour. Aromas/flavors of blackberry, cigar box, and cedar. Nice tannic structure. However, this wine was in a dumb stage - not much complexity and somewhat light. I think it needs at least another 5+ years. Definitely has long term potential written all over it. Tasted at Rod's Christmas party with colleagues including JoAnn.

  • Opened bottle and poured off a half glass at noon. Decanted around 4pm and drank from 7-midnight. Remained tight the entire time. Very CA-like to me and 2 other tasters. Firm structure and muted fruit. Some spice and a hint of leather.

Drank the leftovers (a glass) 2 days later and it showed much better. Still not fully clicking, but showed leather, earth, licorice as well as more integration and a smoother finish. Definite improvement and has good upside potential.

  • Decanted for two hours. Deep ruby/purple. Initially closed nose opened up a little to show currant, graphite, and oak. Big with tons of structure, supported by full yet elegant fruit. Long finish that is full but not yet delineated. 50+5+12+17+9=93

  • Day 1: Distinctly unimpressed for my first first growth. Decanted 10 hours ago but also sipped on over the course of the day from the bottle. This wine really didn't evolve a whole lot in this time. The nose somewhat, the palate very little. Very dark in color, dark purple with lovely coloring. A big nose of smoke, leather, currant and cocoa that was attractive and open-knit from the start and improved a little over the day. But the problem is the palate. Medium-bodied, with sweet flavors of currant, coffee, and roasted black fruits and a short, clipped, tannic finish. I can only hope the other bottle I have that I intend to lay down for the next twenty years, offers considerably more pleasure. NR.

Day 2: The wine has now been in a decanter for over 30 hours (in the fridge for the past 24) and it is far, far better than yesterday. The nose is softer and approachable, with rich cassis, and although the wine is still very tannic, there is class, balance, pedigree and breeding in every sip. It is a civilized wine drinking far more easily than it should at such a young age. The flavors are nothing revelatory - pencil lead, currants, and hints of dark chocolate, overlaid with some smokiness, tannin and austerity - but the way the wine is packaged bodes well for a long future. Do not touch this wine for another 12-15 years at least. 94 points.

    What a great learning experience.

  • 9am: the wine is already quite open, oaky nose with a lot of toast, quite tannic but already drinkable, I decide not to decant it. I go back to what I was doing and realise that I still have the taste of the wine in the mouth - awesome finish! 11am: the wine is more and more open, the nose is moving away from oak towards cedar and black fruit. It is opulent and lush but something refrains it from being over the top - there is still a good deal of freshness that makes the wine easy on the nose, and a touch of class so that it doesn't appear too sexy. With food (faux-filet cooked to perfection): the nose is now really fantastic, I could smell it for hours and hours. It shows a rare combination of power and elegance. Tannins are now coming out, tight but not too prominent, and of very high quality. The mouthfeel is quite full and chewy, it wraps and coats the tongue. The finish is still quite incredible. A few hours later I just can't get away from the nose - I actually forget to drink! The balance is phenomenal between the tannins, the touch of acidity, the well-integrated oak. Although it certainly has a lot of potential, the wine is already delicious right now. A wine to remember.

  • 2002 Bordeaux Offline (Frank's Steakhouse, NYC): Rich, full, silky. Not extremely complex, round. Quite drinkable now.

  • 2002 Bordeaux (Garagiste, Seattle, WA): Subdued earth and medium-dark fruits on the nose. On the palate, lightly tart cassis and dark fruits. This wine is quite tannic. The mid-palate and finish are somewhat light.

  • Garagiste 2002 Bordeaux Tasting (Garagiste Warehouse, Seattle, WA): Deep, dark purple. Also a bit closed on the nose. Was able to coax out a bit of cedar which was also present on the palate. More acidic than many of the other wines tonight. Seemed to be a bit of fruit lacking throughout the palate. Finishing with some bitter tannin.

  • Nice oaky and chocolate perfume. Lots of fruits on palate.
Touch of espresso and cigars. Very nice wine overall, however lacks a touch
of balance on finish to score a higher mark.

  • Tasted as part of 2002 Blind Bordeaux Tasting. This wine was ruby red in color with purple hints, good intensity and sediment. Aromas of coffee, spice and currants were most prominent. Flavors of coffee and black cherry were revealed behind the medium acidity and tannins.

  • Oaky nose (granted, very nice oak). Great balanced mouthfeel. Certainly not a wow wine -- but a seemless wine with terrific purity of fruit and balance. Elegant. Decent finish. Not worth the bucks though (IMO). I suspect other wines tasted will likely be just as good in 15 years.

  • Two days in Bordeaux; 2/23/2004-2/24/2004 (St. Estèphe-Pauillac): (Barrel sample from a small bottle in Ch. Mouton-Rothschild tasting room). Fascinating to taste this directly after the d'Armailhac and Clerc Milon from the same vintage. This is massive in comparison, but lacks the immediate appeal of its little sisters. Magnificent thick, tightly wound core of fruit and aromatic spices - will take at least a decade to start to unravel. I bet this will be fabulous on maturity. 80% CS, 10% CF, 10% Merlot. 91-94P

  • Tasted from the barrel at the Chateau. Most impressive wine of the trip, already showing a remarkable complexity and silky multi-layered texture. The 2002 Leoville Barton almost seems slightly monolithic in comparison and the 2002 Pontet Canet seems somewhat simple in comparison. In the mouth, dark chocolate and espresso along with rich, voluptuous primary dark fruit. Most impressive in the mouth. Great finish lasting over 30 seconds. They adjourned the tasting and almost had to drag me out of there.
