Medium garnet. Pronounced intensity on the nose - dried dark fruit, bacon, leather, liquorice, herbs - thyme, lavender, earth, smoke, hint of honey. Dry palate, medium acidity, med+ fine tannins, med+ body, med alcohol, palate similar to the nose. Long finish. Outstanding. With 14+ years this is fully mature and drinking beautifully. The back label says “en maturité de 10-15 ans, en majesté de 15-25 ans”. I will enjoy following the evolution over the next 10 years although to me this is fully developed now.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Bordeaux 2005 vs 2009 (by DJ): In the bouquet dark and red berries. More primary than in the 2005. On the palate a lot of vanilla, cedar, red berries, herbs and spices and chocolate. Full bodied and beautiful acidity and round tannin. 91 - 92

Inviting nose of leather. Definitely less fruit forward than in its youth but the herbal complexity is on another level here. Tarragon, blackcurrant, vanilla and mint along with a cedary undertone. Long finish. Chewy and very drying tannins, I think this will cellar for another 5-10 but not sure what else one will get out of it.

Quite ripe, mainly blackcurrant fruit, reasonably lively but not as full as I was expecting. In fact it seems a little weak at the finish and there may be some tannin holding it back. It certainly has potential, but it is a little disjointed at present and perhaps needs a year or two to come together.
Classic claret colour. Funky nose appeared and disappeared throughout the evening. Cedar and red fruit. Sweet attack, well integrated tannins and the acidity gives a slight tanginess to wine. A little short and not particularly complex

Decanted 1 hour, drank over two days. Dark garnet. Somewhat subdued bouquet showing cassis and leather, perhaps some game notes. Quick build from the attack and spreads out across the palate with cassis and licorice. Full bodied, fine tannins, sweet and yet still shows a nice core of vibrancy on the long final.
My wife noted some vanilla notes on our first, but not the second, evening which I did not. We both agreed though that the wine was improved on the second day. This was my first experience with this wine and first of a stash of 6. I'm impressed by the marriage of intensity and freshness and this seems if anything just to be on the front edge of a long drinking window. Looking forward to enjoying the others over the next 5-10 years.

Gave it 2 hours decant before serving. Intense nose with licorice and animality. Lots of dark fruit on the palate centered on very concentrated ripe cherry. Long finish with several notes; anis, oak, toast, herbal notes. I really like this uncomplicated an yet enormous complex style of the better wines from southern France. Very enjoyable and an absolute perfect match for the food; traditional French Cassoulet with “confit de canard”, butterbeans, carrots, garlic, herbs etc. This wine for sure have another decade for developing in the cellar but also drinkable now (with a decant). I love it. 92-94P

Nose instantly violet blackcurrant hint of cassis then with 10 mins air became more lifted and fragrant, blackcurrant leaf but with spicy fig underlaying, lots going on. Palate fresh firm and direct, tannins are ripe and present but lovely volume and black currant fruit which finishes long and deliciously. Very good now and 15 + years easy still to go. Decant 2 hours in advance for the next bottle.

PnP: Very interesting nose with licorice, acetone and cow manure (!). Intense and very interesting nose. On the palate a very fine viscosity and deep dark berry fruit and a long finish with oak and anis. Very interesting and defiantly a fine composition. In a blind tasting I would never guessed the grape composition to be a Bx blend (+ some minor share of Pinot Noir and Syrah) After two hours in the glass: The nose change significant to be more complex and inviting. Almost a NSG like nose. On the palate still dark berries but also now some cherry and strawberries in the finish. The palate is now very smooth and accommodating. Very nice and fine complexity and medium long finish. Next day: Nose still with earth and still reminds like a Nuits St. Georges (!). On the palate still cherry and anis in the finish. Now more pronounced oak in the finish as well. This is a very good composed wine. I see it as just entering the drinking window and look forward to follow my remaining bottles over the next decade. 90-93P currently.

Nice, expressive, slightly sweet nose with just a whiff of brett. Smooth and luscious in the mouth. Plenty of fruit. The brett reappears on the medium-length, slightly grippy finish, althought it's much less in evidence than in my previous, mildly corked bottle. This one is very enjoyable overall.

Slightly corked. Managed to get through a glass or so before the TCA became obvious. The 'barnyard' that a few previous tasters have mentioned was well and truly in evidence. At first I figured it was development but I'm now convinced it's brett. It wasn't so strong as to make the wine undrinkable - and to be honest I'm in the camp that sees a bit of brett as adding complexity - but it does take a front seat.

Bright, garnet red, little evidence of ageing in the colour.. Agree the barnyard notes in the nose. Soft, well integrated tannins, sweet, flavours of plum almost prune with enough acidity to prevent flabbiness. Not particularly complex and little by way of secondary flavours? Really like the wine. I don't know if I have just caught this before it enters a quiet period, with more complexity to come but tempted to drink up as it really pleases. Case of 2010 also so will sample that too.

Since my first encounter nearly 2 years ago, this wine has clearly matured and put on some complexity. However, the rich juicy core of fruit seems to have thinned out ever so slightly. As a result the wine seems to have lost a bit of weight. There is also a slight bitterness in the finish. Still good, but not as vibrant as I recall

Deep dark ruby. Vibrant and dense. Inviting aromatics of Cassis, Blackberry and Cherry with hints of Gooseberry (!) come along with beautiful Florals and a complex play of Herbs and Heather. Fine Minerality, decent Freshness of Eucalypt and little Oak. Intriguing, elegant and multi-faceted! Typical Cabernet-driven flavors of Dark Berries as well as Cherry. Dark Chocolate, some Tobacco and Licorice. Full-bodied with great density, but harmoniously balanced. Vivid structure, with fine acidity and rugged, but approachable, tannins in a smooth and soft package. Finishes long with force, present Dark Berry-Fruit and peppery, herbal Spiciness. Fine complexity, depth and elegance!
Sophisticated power comes with tremendous elegance. Delicious fruit, finesse and complexity make the package perfect! A great wine to enjoy right now, but with potential to go the long way (20+ years). See more details at cellartv.wordpress.com

Dinner at home with Mrs L, Thomas and Carman (Hong Kong): After a series of oldish wines, the four of us were on a roll and having run out of wine, I thought we should open something to remind ourselves what a young wine tastes and smells like. This one was lying right on the top shelf of the wine fridge so out came the cork... GRAPE was the answer, the wine smells and tastes of nothing else but rich, luxurious, delightful GRAPE! How unusual, how interesting, fancy that, we thought -- as Mrs L and I bundled the guests out the door and crashed

I really like this! While undoubtedly young, the sweet cassis, blackberry and mineral nose is already bright and open. On the palate, this is a vibrant, expansive full-bodied wine with silkly smooth layers of cassis fruit. The tannins are fine and unobstrusive, and the finish resonates beautifully. While there isn't a whole lot of complexity as yet, it is interesting enough to pour myself glass after glass -- on an school evening when I've just decided to have just one glass to accompany some work emails I need to fire off. Need to buy a few more bottles, great value

Drunk this after the 83 and 86, so not really fair..., but good to see how it could develop with cellaring. Realy smooth with cherries and black berries on the palate but way to young. Potential to score 90+ for sure. Decanted 30 minutes. Drink 2020 - 2035.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #068; Mas de Daumas: Vertical of 6 vintages white and 13 vintages red. (By DJ): This wine is very primary and much too young. That said, the bouquet shows a lot of dark cherry fruits, a bit dust and some spiciness. On the palate ripe dark cherry fruits, blackberries and raspberries. The impression of young new world concentrated shiraz comes to mind. There is licorice and a lot of bitterness and the tannin is still very tight. During the evening the wine developed a bit more and became youthfully tempting. Nevertheless it is probably wise to wait with drinking this wine until we are at the end of this decade; so until 2019 or even 2020. 90+

Aromas of black currant, earth, herbs, baking spice and graham cracker. Medium plus bodied and quite tannic at this young age. Good acidity with red and dark berry fruit on the palate with good length. Generous and drinkable with food in its youth, but ideally would be better with some bottle age.

Quite dark although not opaque. At first, nothing but the sweaty smell of pure tannin, but then blueberry fruit and some baking spice. Very juicy entry with rich blueberry jam, lush and seamless for its medium weight but monolithic. The impression changes toward the back of the mouth, as the acidity comes out, a pine note sneaks in and fairly hard tannins assert themselves. Very interesting stuff. Nowhere near ready and much more potential grip and complexity than are apparent during the first sip.

On the palate a very fine viscosity and deep dark berry fruit and a long finish with oak and anis. Very interesting and defiantly a fine composition. In a blind tasting I would never guessed the grape composition to be a Bx blend (+ some minor share of Pinot Noir and Syrah)
After two hours in the glass: The nose change significant to be more complex and inviting.

I find it fascinating how this Bordeaux blend shows its terroir - that Southern French spicy tannin finish, herbal and floral garrigue.
Early days yet for this wine, though it is enjoyable now - no rush to drink.
13% ABV, sealed with cork.

Weekly tasting group #200; Merlot dominated Bordeaux 2009 (@ RvD): In the bouquet dark forest fruits and some rustic barnyard flavors. On the palate red berries and cherries, ok acidity and relatively soft tannin. Just a few notes this time, but there are 4 more notes of me in CT about this wine. I was a little less impressed than last time in November last year.

This seemed much improved on the previous bottle I had of this. Now here are the dark bramble fruits and a fanciful touch of the herbal and floral garrigue. Very good.

Monthly Tuesday group #003: Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l'Hérault vertical of 16 vintages (by DJ): Very clean bouquet with dark berries and sweet cherries. In the palate a juicy wine with dark forest fruits, but also still locked. There also are some chocolate, leather, coffee, herbs and spices. There is firm acidity and tannin. Overall this is a full bodied wine full of of potential. It has a very good constitution. Hope to taste this again in 2022 – 2024 to see what it really has in store. 90+

DnP. Brilliant red, red rim, 5.5. Complex bouquet dominated by dark fruits and some garrigue like spiciness on a sweetish background. Harmonious dry palate, some tannin but allready really drinkable, long rather elegant finish. Drink now or wait for more tertiary stuff. One of the most characterful Gassac vintages I have enjoyed.

Weekly tasting group #132; Mas de Daumas red 9 vintages plus some extra's. (@ DJ): The bouquet is completely locked and only shows some garrigue. On the palate there are a lot of dark forest fruits, dark plums, leather, licorice, earth and herbs and spices. Rustic. Good acidity and firm tannin, Still much too young. Wait until at least 2020 and it will stay nice for at least a decade after that. 89++ for tonight.
