Lovely nose, classic Grenache CNDP. Pure red fruit. Herbs. A bit alcoholic. Alcohol again present on the palate, muting lovely pure and intense black and red fuit flavours. This benefited from chilling: the alcohol blew off and the really lovely stone fruit character emerged more strongly.

Lab BBQ. Quite a bit of earth/funk on the nose and the palate, followed by rich fruit and a nice mouthfeel. This is a very solid and well-made CdP that leans a bit toward a modern style. Have two left and they should hold for a few years.

Last of six, and this one showed the best. Spice, garrigue, dark honey, ripe, soft fruit. The 05 of this bottling started us on the path to European wines from big CA wines. Now, except for Pegau, and a Vieux Donjon every once in a while, we rarely drink Rhône and CA wine at all. I liked this one though and the earthy flavors. Ann said the wine was too sweet, and didn’t prefer it.

Decanted about 90 minutes, little to no sediment. Fresh berry, but also a darker, more brooding fruit. Some garrigue, little spice. Integrated and fairly polished.

GrandCuvee - CDP Dinner (New Ubin Seafood - Chijmes): A large bouquet, as if fresh flowers plucked from the fields, cherry, and leaves. We can get roses, blackberry, and peppercorns on the palate, with a good tannic structure and fresh acids. A pretty well made one

No formal tasting notes. Quick table decant at the restaurant (HoPR). First taste, fruit heavy/muted on the palate, tannins present but weak. Opened up over the course of the next 90 minutes. Great depth, full body, med acidity, med(+?) alcohol with just a bit of heat on the finish. Rich black fruit, anise, white pepper, with notes of savory herbs and dark earthy soil. Tannins pointed, but well-integrated to round everything out. Wonderful balance with a long finish. Enjoyed with a traditional prime rib dinner; enough in the wine to match the fatty/flavorful meal. Wish we hadn't finished the bottle as quickly so I could have tasted it over the next few hours. Has 3 years left in its prime at least.

This bottle showed better than a bottle from about three years ago. It is still ripe and fruity but it seems to have mellowed some. Accents of pepper and spices. Eric and I liked it more than Ann who’s said it was “just too much,” and that she couldn’t drink it.

The taste is very full-bodied, fruity and intensive, with almost port-wine-like character. The aromas and flavors of Christmas spices and ripe fruits are lovely. The strong alcohol content leads to somewhat heavy impression, but in a good sense. The tannins have resolved, however, and the wine feels soft on the palate. This is a very fine Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is in an excellent, early mature phase at the moment.

Popped and poured. Ripe and raisiny, with some meat and black pepper notes. This is usually one of Ann's favorite wines, but even she found it too big this time. About a third of a bottle left. We'll see what happens with a day of air.
I enjoyed this more on days two and three as the fruit subsided some and there appeared to be more acid to balance the wine. Still a bit big and raisiny though.

Weekly tasting group #202; C9duP 2009 (@ VD): Beautiful bouquet with dark berries and cherries, also some strawberry, herbs and spices and still a little bit lactic. On the palate a lot of herbs and spices, dark and red forest fruits, some chocolate, coffee and tobacco, a touch of sweetness, soft acidity and round tannin with still a soft bite. Overall a beautiful and well balanced wine in the first half of its maturity stage. So much better than the basic wine of this domain and it can definitely last until 2019+. 91 – 92

Tasted during a WA event „a matter of taste”. Medium garnet. Strongly perfumed with red berries, flowers, pepper and cloves almost too much. Full bodied and sweetish with 15% Alcohol. Tasted this with another winemaker and we agreed that there is some CO2 in this wine that must have been added at the end for freshness. It works as for the freshness but is a bit odd for a red wine.

Opened a bottle last night and just wonderful. I've pretty much fallen out of love with CNP as they keep amping them up for the Bob, but this wine (while terrifically ripe and a bit high octane) remains light on its feet and so pure in flavor. Kirsch without the weight.

Isabel Ferrando is one of my favourite producers in Southern Rhône. Her wines have power, but also freshness and, in search for better words, a lift. This one, from the pretty hot vintage 2009, is classic and typical Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Dark raspberries, a bunch of sunwarm stones, the seaweed/nori, the meatiness, the light garrigue and an acidity that is high for the region makes this a pleasure with our lamb. It's warm but not hot. The finish is long and pure. This is not going downhill, but I'm not quite sure it will reward cellaring. That depends on how you like your Chateauneuf. Today it's fresh, tomorrow I have a feeling it'll move more towards the dark side. (92-93)

Almost two years since the last bottle and the wine really hasn't changed much. For sure a ripe and modern styled CdP with accents of crushed black pepper, spices and that note that I can only describe as dark honey. We had this with really good bacon cheeseburgers at The Twelves and they went well together. Bigger than I prefer but Ann loved it. Give it an hour or two of air to open up.

When first opened, was tight, out of balance and stand-alone tannins although the nose promised more to come. An hour later, it delivered as the flavors matched up to the nose. Grenache sweetness, light strawberry and kirsch, nicely balanced with moderate finish. A bit of garrigue in the nose, hint of flowers but could not quite grasp it. Lovely wine. Not one for the ages, but enjoyable.

Popped, poured and tasted over three days. Day one this is very tight, showing a mix of red and black fruits, licorice, blood, and black pepper. On days two and three, the wine has opened up and the fruit shows more ripe and sweet with the black pepper and blood notes in the background. The licorice is no longer there. Overall I think/hope this wine has good potential but I am slightly concerned about the ripeness/sweetness. The 2005 vintage of this is still my favorite. I will wait a few years before opening another.

Tasting of Isabel Ferrando's Portfolio (Union Square Wines): 80% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 5% Mourvèdre. Very low yields, cement vats. Strawberry and earthy nose. Tannic and tight right now. Needs a lot of time to integrate and calm down a bit.

A polished, but still a bit feral, CdP: berry and red currant, with charcuterie, smoke, and stones. Highly aromatic, with power in the mouth, ripe and sweet tannins, and a lingering finish. A great CdP.

Smoky nose. Spicey. Very young. 88/89? Tasted at Uncorked 2009 Rhone en Primeur.
