Opened at 4pm Tight, dry, Decanted at 4:45, served at 6:30, Still quite tight, with strong tannin. 7pm Set aside. 10pm, became more fragrant, but still very tight and dry, tannin remains strong. Really started to come around in the last glass, the aroma and flavour finally came out from the tannin wall. This was so much younger than expected. Wish I had 3 more to watch tue progression over the next 10y

Still young, needed a 2 hour decant before opening up optimally. Sipped over another two hours plus. Even better the second day.
Black currant, black fruit, still very fruit forward, some secondary characteristics of leather and earthiness, but not very prominent. Tannins are low to medium and acidity is medium. Very nice elegant finish.
This is entering a nice drinking window but I suspect I opened too early. I think it will be drinking better in 3-5 years.

A few sips upon opening made it clear that this wine needed air. After an hour and a half of decanter time (with slight sediment) it was ready. The color was a clear deep violet to a faded rim. After the initial funk blows off, the red fruit aromas come to the fore. The medium bodied palate showed lots of red (cherry) fruit, along with some earth and cedar. The acidity was relatively balancing, and there was a touch of tannin on the finish. This wine has done very well over the 15 years since vintage, and may hold for several more, but enjoy it in the short term, with lots of air.

Opened and decanted for an hour but it was already open. Ripe dark fruit notes, with plum and coffe notes and chocolate on the finish. On the far end of its drinking window, it unfortunately started to turn 3 hours after opening. For me it’s on the light side for an aged Brunello compared to some of its peers.

(Decanted for one hour) Red colour with a brick red hue. Maturing nose showing tobacco, truffles, sweet blackberries and forest floor in a very seductive way. Still some austere tannins left to back up the sweetness from the primary fruit and with a nice and rounder finish showing some notes of leather and tobacco again on the nice and lengthy finish. Wines of Italy Class at the Texas Wine School. Decanted for more than an hour. Ruby to garnet in color, slightly lighter and more brick than in 2018. The nose was clean, medium in intensity and not quite what it was a year ago. The nose was complex, with ripe black cherry, black plum, aromatic herbs, leather, forest floor and licorice. The palate is consistent with the nose. The acidity and tannins are medium (+) and the alcohol is medium (13%). This is a very well balanced, classic, elegant, structured red, with a medium (+) finish. The flavor intensity and concentration is just not what I remembered it to be. It this would appear that it has started its downward glide. Drink before 2022.

Dry flowers, pine forest and earth is on the nose. The tannins are medium soft and the color is a pale garnet. The quaff has the noble dark fruit Brunello trademark with herbs and elderberry notes finished with a pencil shaving finale.

Deep, concentrated and slightly developed pomegranate color with a hint of translucency. The nose feels dense and concentrated, yet also somewhat restrained with brooding aromas of savory cherry-driven fruit, some ripe yet not particularly sweet dark fruits, a little bit of perfumed floral character, a hint of woody oak spice and a touch of mocha. The wine is big, dry and quite concentrated on the palate with powerful flavors of licorice, sour cherry bitterness, some tart red plums, a little bit of earth, light smoky tones of charred meat, light exotic spice tones like caraway and cumin and a hint of savory woody spice. The wine feels very tightly-knit and muscular with its high acidity and firm, noticeably grippy tannins. The finish is dense, chewy and quite tannic with concentrated flavors of ripe black cherries, some licorice, a little bit of earthy spice, light bitter tones of sour cherries, a hint of tart red plums and a touch of cigar box.
A very concentrated, muscular and powerful Brunello that is all about that bold 2006 fruit, yet fortunately not coming across as unbalanced or particularly sweet-toned. Even the alcohol level and oak use feel quite moderate for the style. As a whole the wine is still very tightly-knit and rather youthful; most likely it will continue to develop for many years more and keep for several decades. Expect the score to go up with age. Great value at 34€.

Time has not helped. Very oak with driving spice and this didn't really make the wine at all friendly. Generic red, a little monolithic, very ripe and I would think plays well above the stated 13.5%. A wine from a bygone error I hope. No point keeping any longer.

Did not have time for a proper decant so pretty much right out of the bottle. Dense colour, red with a hint of orange. Lots of power left, tertiary notes basically absent. No rush if you have a dark and cool storage.

Tuscany Class at the Texas Wine School. Decanted for more than an hour. Ruby to garnet in color, only slightly lighter and more brick-like on the rim. The nose was clean and medium (+) in intensity, although it faded pretty rapidly over the course of the evening. The nose was complex, with ripe black cherry, black plum, aromatic herbs, leather, forest floor and licorice. The palate is consistent with the nose. The acidity and tannins are medium (+) and the alcohol is medium (13%). This is a very well balanced, classic, elegant, structured red, with a medium to long finish. The two years in Slavonian oak casks and French oak barrels seems just about right, with the oak not overpowering the fruit. It is drinking well now and should continue to do so for several more years. Tasted again on 8/28/18 with consistent results.

Interesting aroma of blackberry, dark cherry, vanilla, mushrooms and leather. Less interesting in the mouth. Still quite structured, but the fruit has faded away and not been replaced by something else. Not sure where it will go from here, but kind of relieved it is my last bottle.

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by a puckerish astringency which SLOWLY. SEAMLESSLY moves into a VERY LONG, spicy/tangy finish. Though certainly APPROACHABLE now, this DESERVES until '20 min, then POSS making the end of the decade. not quite rated as high as last bottle. It had nice color and fruit and well integrated tannins but not quite the Wow factor of my first bottle a few years back. I'm finding that I'm not liking the 10+ year old Brunellos, instead preferring the profile of the 7-8 year olds instead.

Acheté cette bouteille avec 5 autres de la SAQ dépot dans le temps, 20% de rabais + le 15% de rabais pour 12 bouteilles...on commence à parler d'un sérieux RQP ICI! Un bon 3 heures en carafe et il se met à chanter. Superbe nez sur les fleurs, l'anis et les fruits rouges. En bouche, belle structure, encore puissant mais on sent l'équilibre et qu'il commence à entrer dans sa fenêtre. De belles saveurs de cerises, de poivre, de terre, de sang et d'anis. Les tanins sont encore serrés mais bien recouverts. La finale fraiche et très longue et savoureuse. EXCELLENT et pour longtemps

Had among 5 total Brunello's tonight. Altesino 2012, Colina dei Lecci 2008, La Rasina 2005, Castelgiocondo 2006 & Gianni Brunelli 2006 I thought this was very good and much more old world then the other. Notable leather notes among cherry and light prunes. Required 2 hour decant. Medium to long finish with a harsher finish than the Gianni Brunelli.

I could detect the aroma of red fruits from far away after opening. There was almost no sediment in the bottle after decanting, and in the glass was a fairly deep red. On first taste, it was a little thin with notes of vanilla coming awkwardly to the fore, but after around 30 minutes it bodied up nicely and the vanilla subsided. There are red fruits and cherry on the palate with medium acidity and well integrated tannins with all elements in beautiful balance and a medium-long finish. It's not the most complex BdM, but is has something very satisfying and mouth-watering about it. The 2006 is in its prime drinking window now and should keep at a good level for another 5 years albeit without much potential for further evolution. This is a good value BdM and is likely to appeal to a broad spectrum of tastes.

Opened and let breathe for 4 hours along with the 2007. The 2006 was much more enjoyable. Paired with braised short rib and polenta, the 2006 showed much more depth and balance, I think partly b/c of the vintage and partly b/c of the extra year of aging. Full bodied, medium to long finish, tannins still very present. Very enjoyable, but at $55 not a great QPR.

Exceeded my expectations. I had a 2007 not too long ago and it was boring and modern and barely tasted of sangio. This 2006 hit me totally different. It was still modern and polished, but it was delicious. It had tannins, a little earth and leather, and so much delicious cherry. Just a joy to drink, and just entering it's window.

Really enjoyed this wine. Gave it a 2 hour decant before drinking. The nose was sweet and perfumed, like sniffing a cherry coke, to be honest. On the palate, very bright, red fruits came across along with a good helping of tannin. Drinking well now, but it has a lot of years left.

Tasted 2006 and 2001 vintages together. Similar flavor profile (dark fruits, herbal good complexity) but tannins are stronger and more muted flavors for 2006. Started to open up after 2 hours of air time with more fuller flavors and slight softening of tannins. If you can wait, keep this sleeping for another 3-4 years. If open today, air out for at least an hour.

Look, I usually love Brunello, but Im sorry too say that I agree with PGB67, very disappointing. Where's the fruit? Where's the body? This is almost tinny in taste. Certainly it won't get any better with time, so drink up, lick your wounds and look for a better Brunello. Luckily, I only bought this as a try-out and have a dozen other Brunellos in the cellar that are tried and true. This one doesn't go on the re-buy list I'm afraid.

Dark garnet color turning crimson at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose shows off dark fruit, espresso, leather and tobacco. The palate is dry, medium-to-full-bodied with a silky texture. I have 3 of these so decided to check-in on one to match with a pasta and meatball dinner. Classic Brunello with all the text book elements, brick red color, sour cherry notes with an earthy aroma. A fantastic bottle of wine. I had the 2004 and was very underwhelmed, especially given the WS score. The 2006 once again scored high and I bit. This one was much much better! It has nice, light color, great fruit aroma, integrated tannins after a two hour decant. Just a delicious Sangiovese. Highly recommended.

Hard to get a read. Kinda generic in a red wine sort of way with more than a plank of wood. Dry, a little spice, but I attribute this mostly to the wood. Tannin and backbone suggests a long life ahead but bloody hard to see much fruit here.

Beautiful nose immediately upon opening - red berry, a little funk. Decanted only a few minutes before drinking. initially a little hot, but then softened. An hour or two more before drinking would probably be ideal. Fruit was apparent, tannins well balanced with acidity. A bit of a viscous mouth feel which was very pleasant. This was drunk with a rich lamb stew and it complemented the meal very well. I think it is perfectly ready to drink right now; what I am not sure about is whether or not it will really going to make it another 7-8 years as projected (and mine is in controlled environ). We will see.

Deep red in colour, light red brim. Dark fruit, tannins but not much more at first. Have opened up since the first bottle I tested but still needed 4 hours of air before drinking. This wine drinks well today with food that rounds up the tannins but will undoubtedly be a star with a couple of years maturity (90+ in my view). I will wait 3-5 years for my next bottle.

Decanted six hours; but, interestingly, decanting seemed unnecessary. This Brunello is extraordinary straight out of the bottle. Dense and full-bodied. Rifling aromas of berries, black cherries, mocha, plum, and toffee. Beautifully structured. Fine streak of minerality and seemlessly integrated tannins. Smooth, racy, long-lasting finish. Yum!

Tasted blind at TWM. This wine was medium ruby in color. The nose was a bit reticent, rocks, leather, wet soil, all supported by red cherry fruit, seems a bit closed down at the moment. The palate was quite big, showing a full-bodied wine with rather bold tannins, black cherry and plum fruit, resinous and thick in the mouth, with slate and chalk on the medium plus finish. The wine has good acid, and is really delicious. I would drink this wine starting in 3-4 years, or the following 15 years. I would estimate the value of this wine at around $55 (TWM is selling it for $58 today).

The 2006 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di Montalcino is very pretty. It brings notes of fresh blackberry, cherries, smoke, floral and spicy cedar. This is tightly wound with fine tannins. The finish is very long and expressive. This needs a few good years in the cellar to settle down. (Drink 2014-2028) - April, 2012 (JD)

Relativement évolué et souple pour un 2006 en Toscane. Beau rubis moyennement profond qui devient grenat au disque. Le nez est dominé par les arômes traditionnels de griottes, de violette, de cuir et d'épices mais, oh surprise, de la feuille de tomate se déploie et qui annonce une maturité un peu hâtive à mon avis pour ce vin. En bouche, l'attaque est corsée, fraîche, et les tannins sont fermes et enrobés. Le corps est plein, fruité (cerise, griotte) où se mêle le cuir, les épices (anis) et la violette. Finale florale relativement courte avec des notes de torréfaction. Fort bon maintenant, 90 points, mais déjà très évolué et où la richesse du 2006 semble lui avoir échappée pour une raison que j'ignore. À boire dans les 3-5 prochaines années selon moi. Mais on verra.

Opened on Friday night and drank throughout the long weekend until Monday. This is too young to open. On Friday night, this tasted of mainly sour cherry with pronounced acidity. By Monday evening the wine had changed into something much more interesting, with tar, roses, leather, minerality and menthol, and the palate had gained much more complexity as well. Currently 89, with the potential of 91+ in 5 years time or so.

The nose was powerful with tart red fruits and wild herbs. On the palate, it was restrained, due to its firm structure, yet a solid core of red and black fruit still managed to shine through. This was a wine for the cellar that should provide much enjoyment when it reaches its maturity.

Mmmm... I don't know. Certainly not worth drinking now, but also rather unusual for a young Brunello. Certainly there is depth, the fruit is intense, and the wine is extracted and concentrated. But it is also built in a very modern style and in a blind tasting I would not have identified it as a Brunello, which is unusual. We will see how it develops. For now it is hard to call.

Tasted this at a Frescobaldi tasting and seminar. Bottles opened before tasting but not decanted. Not much showing here at all. Seems completely closed down. Disappointed after hearing so much about the 2006 vintage. I was wowed by the 2001 Castelgiocondo which I also tasted just after it arrived in 2006. Not Rated. I passed on purchasing.

Black currant, black fruit, still very fruit forward, some secondary characteristics of leather and earthiness, but not very prominent. Tannins are low to medium and acidity is medium. Very nice elegant finish.
This is entering a nice drinking window but I suspect I opened too early. I think it will be drinking better in 3-5 years.

A few sips upon opening made it clear that this wine needed air. After an hour and a half of decanter time (with slight sediment) it was ready. The color was a clear deep violet to a faded rim. After the initial funk blows off, the red fruit aromas come to the fore. The medium bodied palate showed lots of red (cherry) fruit, along with some earth and cedar. The acidity was relatively balancing, and there was a touch of tannin on the finish.
This wine has done very well over the 15 years since vintage, and may hold for several more, but enjoy it in the short term, with lots of air.

Red colour with a brick red hue. Maturing nose showing tobacco, truffles, sweet blackberries and forest floor in a very seductive way. Still some austere tannins left to back up the sweetness from the primary fruit and with a nice and rounder finish showing some notes of leather and tobacco again on the nice and lengthy finish.

Wines of Italy Class at the Texas Wine School. Decanted for more than an hour. Ruby to garnet in color, slightly lighter and more brick than in 2018. The nose was clean, medium in intensity and not quite what it was a year ago. The nose was complex, with ripe black cherry, black plum, aromatic herbs, leather, forest floor and licorice. The palate is consistent with the nose. The acidity and tannins are medium (+) and the alcohol is medium (13%). This is a very well balanced, classic, elegant, structured red, with a medium (+) finish. The flavor intensity and concentration is just not what I remembered it to be. It this would appear that it has started its downward glide. Drink before 2022.

As a whole the wine is still very tightly-knit and rather youthful; most likely it will continue to develop for many years more and keep for several decades. Expect the score to go up with age. Great value at 34€.

The nose was complex, with ripe black cherry, black plum, aromatic herbs, leather, forest floor and licorice. The palate is consistent with the nose. The acidity and tannins are medium (+) and the alcohol is medium (13%). This is a very well balanced, classic, elegant, structured red, with a medium to long finish. The two years in Slavonian oak casks and French oak barrels seems just about right, with the oak not overpowering the fruit. It is drinking well now and should continue to do so for several more years. Tasted again on 8/28/18 with consistent results.

I could detect the aroma of red fruits from far away after opening. There was almost no sediment in the bottle after decanting, and in the glass was a fairly deep red. On first taste, it was a little thin with notes of vanilla coming awkwardly to the fore, but after around 30 minutes it bodied up nicely and the vanilla subsided. There are red fruits and cherry on the palate with medium acidity and well integrated tannins with all elements in beautiful balance and a medium-long finish. It's not the most complex BdM, but is has something very satisfying and mouth-watering about it. The 2006 is in its prime drinking window now and should keep at a good level for another 5 years albeit without much potential for further evolution. This is a good value BdM and is likely to appeal to a broad spectrum of tastes.

Opened and let breathe for 4 hours along with the 2007. The 2006 was much more enjoyable. Paired with braised short rib and polenta, the 2006 showed much more depth and balance, I think partly b/c of the vintage and partly b/c of the extra year of aging. Full bodied, medium to long finish, tannins still very present. Very enjoyable, but at $55 not a great QPR.

Exceeded my expectations. I had a 2007 not too long ago and it was boring and modern and barely tasted of sangio. This 2006 hit me totally different. It was still modern and polished, but it was delicious. It had tannins, a little earth and leather, and so much delicious cherry. Just a joy to drink, and just entering it's window.

I have 3 of these so decided to check-in on one to match with a pasta and meatball dinner. Classic Brunello with all the text book elements, brick red color, sour cherry notes with an earthy aroma. A fantastic bottle of wine. I had the 2004 and was very underwhelmed, especially given the WS score. The 2006 once again scored high and I bit. This one was much much better! It has nice, light color, great fruit aroma, integrated tannins after a two hour decant. Just a delicious Sangiovese. Highly recommended.

Nothing great. It's hard to find balance in brunellos but usually not lack of fruit but too much tanins. I see why some people give up on Italian wines all together.

Wide open after a two-hour decant. Wild flowers, red fruit and hints of dusty chocolate across a juicy yet delicate finish. A good early-drinking BDM, but didnt knock my socks off, especially in a vintage as solid as '06.

Un beau Brunello souple et assez approchable.
Nez sur les fleurs, la cerise, les épices et le goudron.
En bouche, belle amplitude avec passablement de fruits,
les cerises sures avec de la réglisse noire et du tabac blond.
Les tannins sont charnus et bien enrobés avec une belle acidité.

Beautiful nose immediately upon opening - red berry, a little funk. Decanted only a few minutes before drinking. initially a little hot, but then softened. An hour or two more before drinking would probably be ideal. Fruit was apparent, tannins well balanced with acidity. A bit of a viscous mouth feel which was very pleasant. This was drunk with a rich lamb stew and it complemented the meal very well. I think it is perfectly ready to drink right now; what I am not sure about is whether or not it will really going to make it another 7-8 years as projected (and mine is in controlled environ). We will see.

Deep red in colour, light red brim. Dark fruit, tannins but not much more at first. Have opened up since the first bottle I tested but still needed 4 hours of air before drinking. This wine drinks well today with food that rounds up the tannins but will undoubtedly be a star with a couple of years maturity (90+ in my view). I will wait 3-5 years for my next bottle.

Decanted six hours; but, interestingly, decanting seemed unnecessary. This Brunello is extraordinary straight out of the bottle. Dense and full-bodied. Rifling aromas of berries, black cherries, mocha, plum, and toffee. Beautifully structured. Fine streak of minerality and seemlessly integrated tannins. Smooth, racy, long-lasting finish. Yum!

Tasted blind at TWM. This wine was medium ruby in color. The nose was a bit reticent, rocks, leather, wet soil, all supported by red cherry fruit, seems a bit closed down at the moment. The palate was quite big, showing a full-bodied wine with rather bold tannins, black cherry and plum fruit, resinous and thick in the mouth, with slate and chalk on the medium plus finish. The wine has good acid, and is really delicious. I would drink this wine starting in 3-4 years, or the following 15 years. I would estimate the value of this wine at around $55 (TWM is selling it for $58 today).

The 2006 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di Montalcino is very pretty. It brings notes of fresh blackberry, cherries, smoke, floral and spicy cedar. Relativement évolué et souple pour un 2006 en Toscane. Beau rubis moyennement profond qui devient grenat au disque. Le nez est dominé par les arômes traditionnels de griottes, de violette, de cuir et d'épices mais, oh surprise, de la feuille de tomate se déploie et qui annonce une maturité un peu hâtive à mon avis pour ce vin. En bouche, l'attaque est corsée, fraîche, et les tannins sont fermes et enrobés. Le corps est plein, fruité (cerise, griotte) où se mêle le cuir, les épices (anis) et la violette. Finale florale relativement courte avec des notes de torréfaction. Opened on Friday night and drank throughout the long weekend until Monday. This is too young to open. On Friday night, this tasted of mainly sour cherry with pronounced acidity. By Monday evening the wine had changed into something much more interesting, with tar, roses, leather, minerality and menthol, and the palate had gained much more complexity as well. Currently 89, with the potential of 91+ in 5 years time or so.

The nose was powerful with tart red fruits and wild herbs. On the palate, it was restrained, due to its firm structure, yet a solid core of red and black fruit still managed to shine through. This was a wine for the cellar that should provide much enjoyment when it reaches its maturity.
