This was an interesting bottle - 2nd of 3 with the last bottle 8 years ago and don't remember much about it. Somewhat sunken mid-palate with a slightly oxidized older wood note and then a stronger finish. Less floral nose than I typically expect on Raveneau and no "honeyed" finish. But still a nice drink. That said, I don't think I will wait as long on the final bottle.

Tons of minerality, laser like precision, and a jolt of acidity. Lots of lemon and granny smith apples. I personally don't get why the drink date is set to 2014. The wine is still very youthful and can easily go for 10 more years most likely. A great buy for those who bought this wine when it came out back then. (Raveneau's wines I feel are just too expensive now)

Deep yellow color. The nose is definitely Raveneau with more Meyer lemon, chalk, iodine and less sea brine that you expect in a more classic vintage. Unctuous texture, more flat but this shows the ripeness of the vintage, definitely more sugar than a classic year, but this is surprisingly acidic on the finish (maybe due to some pH adjustments to add acidity). Nevertheless the sweet and sour 1-2 punch works very well. More Cote de Beaune like but definitely Raveneau and fun to drink.,This shows incredibly youthful and appears to be able to age effortlessly.

Big smoke and sulfur in addition to the classic salinity and brine. Wicked crackling sulfur. Palate is awesome with exotic tropical fruits. Underripe to ripe, makes for very hedonistic drinking right now.

Nose: There is a quasi tropical backdrop to the nose with citrus tones, sea shells, minerals, red apples, and pears.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. The feel is balanced and plush with citrus tones, sea shells, red apples, and pears.
Overall: Raveneau is as Raveneaus does. It shows off the 03-ness to it, yet it's still quite raveneau. This is a delicious MdT that is drinking great right now.

Gorgeous, classic Chablis nose of green apples, chalk, river water with citrus zest. Palate is softer and lower acid given the hot vintage. Good salinity and minerality interlaced with white fruit. Time to drink this vintage, I'd reckon.

Sunday Dinner at Formento's (Chicago, IL): Very pale in colour (a good sign). Definitely a softer, fatter Raveneau, with a bit of stewed fruit on the nose. This doesn't hold the same tension and acidity as Raveneau in the good years, but there's certainly a lot to like here. The lemon and chalk qualities that I've always expected are still present, if the salinity is a bit dilute. This is very well made in the context of the vintage, and when all is said and done, still a very good bottle of chardonnay in and of itself. Now, with that out of the way, I really wouldn't be holding this much longer. I don't see any upside to doing that.

Deep gold. Fruit driven fragrance of ripe melons. Ripe melons and lemon citrus, nicely weighted, lush body. Definitely has a soft but fleshy finish, not a lot of acidity there. Atypical flavours but a very pleasant drink for now, probably past its best.

10 Vintages of Raveneau's Montee de Tonnerre (Vin, Vino, Wine in Palo Alto, CA): 10 Vintages of Raveneau MdT 02 thru 12 (minus the 06), poured at a VVW sit down tasting. My seventh place wine. The nose shows some funk/skunky elements, not sure if its sulphur or something microbial. Medium yellow color. The palate is clean, but unfortunately kind of flat and lifeless. There is tons of glycerol and a medium mouthfeel, kind of oily like a Hermitage Blanc. I'm not sure what this is aging on, but its holding together nicely for this very challenging vintage.

CELLAR SELECTION My first bottle of Raveneau Chablis and well worth the wait. There are good Chablis, great Chablis, and then Raveneau, which is in a different class all together. Profound with layer upon layer of complex flavor. This wasn't an easy wine to grab precise flavors as it changed minute by minute. The wine went from citrus to honeycomb, to butter, to toast, to red berries, and round and round it went. Full of wild yeast funkiness and huge glycerin levels. Awesome wine.

It's funny. This last bottle of this wine has been sitting in the wine refrigerator longer than anything else since I just could not get excited about drinking it based on experience with previous bottles. Tonight was the night, and surprise...it was good. Slightly turbid light yellow with some remaining green. Low pitched citrus. Medium body-certainly not the ponderous weight I'd encountered before, and even has some delicacy of the cru. Sweet orange, vanilla, chalk and some salinity with adequate acidity. Yes, the wood stuck out much more than it usually does in Raveneau wines, but all in all, not only recognizable as Chablis, but better than merely good. Wonders never cease, but this won't spur me to load up on 2003 Chablis or any European white for that matter.

Pale golden with a glint of green. Nose is semi-complex, meaning that you could pick up different aromas at different times but there was always an underying hint of vanilla and oyster shell. Some concentration of the mineral, shell and sweet lemon on the palate with a nice aftertaste. The body is perhaps too big and there is a sweet sensation that marks this a lesser vintage. The wine rates excellent but is disappointing given the house (and the price).

Interestingly, more youthful and lighter in color than the '03 Montee I had (note below) almost two years ago. Light golden color, reticent nose at first (so much for overripe '03s!), but slowly what gets coaxed out is the lovely Steely lemon lime zest, wet limestone, spearmint, sea foam. Lovely, showing lighter bodied than the last few. Elegant food wine, great.

My third and final bottle of this wine... TN wise this is a lot deeper in color than previously noted, a lot more evolved and tertiary (a majority of 03 white burgs are not going to be long lived obviously), texture and expression of place was more like the 2nd than 1st bottle... overall I hold my position that this is a rather disappointing Rav Tonnerre that I would drink sooner rather than later (remaining bits were quite oxidized on day 2).

Light yellow. Some lemon and grapefruit. Rich and fat to begin but then seemed less cumbersome. Good minerality but low acidity. This was better and more Chablisien than the only other bottle I'd had years ago, but still not great and more Chardonnay than Chablis, an unpardonable sin.

This bottle was very different than the first I commented on and was much closer to what I expected from this wine... there were none of the textural issues I noted previously and the wine had some typicity... this is certainly not a great Raveneau Tonnerre, but it is not nearly as bad as the bottle I tasted previously... " very good" to "excellent" on the CT rating scale.

Shokolaat/Zibibbo Ash Baumgarten et al -- Showing just wonderfully, round and supple (more soft than most years but it is '03), but not heavy handed at all. Lovely lemon pie, white truffle and spearmint swirls in. Paired beautifully with a truffle-chunk studded tuna tartar, wild mushroom soup and seared sole.

Very delicate and pretty nose of apples and custard and cherry blossom and then a super mineral palate which was very lean for 2003. It would be great to see what happens to this wine in 5 years’ time. The palate had a richness with spice and green herbs, but supported by this seam of minerality. Very complex and long and opened up after decanting.

Atypical nose, with some tropical notes interspersed with the more traditional seashore, saline and mineral Chablis elements. First impression on the palate is one of viscosity (more like a Sauternes than a Chablis), but not cloying or heaviness....just much thicker than your average Chablis from Raveneau. Some edginess and cut to the palate, followed by a long lifting finish. Beats expectations for a 2003 Chablis, but below expectations for a Raveneau.

Color starting to turn bright yellow... low aromatic intensity with citrus, some light nutty aromas, a hint of leesiness... no hints of botrytis or diacetyls. On the palate the wine is dry, has plenty of acidity, some phenolic firmness, low to moderate alcohol... moderate weight and no sense of malo creaminess. With time and air the wine never really goes anywhere, it in fact gets more phenolic and harder on the palate. Aromatically, if you try really hard, at the end of the short to moderately long finish, there may be just a hint of minerality and crushed sea shell in there. Slightly firm on the balance, short to moderate length, low intensity, low complexity. Wine has finesse, slightly coarse texture, and does have reasonable expression of place. Very atypical and very low in quality for Raveneau... "good" wine at best. Can't see how time will improve this wine.

This wine was opened and poured as a part of quintet of Raveneau MdT vintage 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. This wine is currently showing outstanding balance, depth and complexity. This is not a wine for long aging but is a wine that has entered and optimal drinking period and showing as well as any of the other wines in the flight. In fact, the only wine that showed superior to this was the 2003 Raveneau Valmur that was opened previous to the flight. All the component and have come together nicely to make this an outstanding showing for this wine. This is most likely not going to benefit from additional bottle age as it does not have the structure and intensity as the 2000 or 2002. Based on tasting these 2003s from Raveneau plus previous experience with his 2003s, it appears that Raveneau succeeded in making wines of outstanding balance and complexity in a tough vintage. These are definitely wines to drink in the mid-term while more structured, focused and intense vintages from Raveneau sleep.

Raveneau and Bea @ Dan's (Palo Alto, CA): Drinking well. A plusher style of Chablis, but not without a spine. My score reflects current pleasure quotient, as opposed to ageablility. Round in the mouth, with good "fat". Fruit driven Chablis.

Raveneau Montee de Tonnerre retrospective (Dan's place, Palo Alto, CA): Marco and gang Raveneau-a-thon -- Showed much softer and almost "powdery" next to the other Montees. Many thought this was the most drinkable now. I found some nice cream lemon pie, soft round tropical notes. Not the typical wonderful minty seashell meets white truffle Raveneau here, but a crowd pleaser.

Opened two identical bottles with the gang at La Strada -- both showed absolutely beautifully (whewww, no corkiness). Textbook Raveneau -- even in this hot vintage. Maybe the wine had a tad more weight than usual, but nowhere near "flabby" or anything like that at all. Classic Raveneau evolution: steely and minerally at first, then as it warms in the glass you get hazelnut, minty crushed oyster shell, honey with a touch of white truffle. Paired beautifully with an assortment of Italian seafood small bites...

Roy Hersh comes to town- Raveneau, Donnhoff, Pegau, Beaucastel & more ensue. (Il Corso): Ripe apple and poached pear aromas with just a hint of guava which overburden the minerality that's trying to make a show of it. As expected, fat and supple on the palate given the vintage, though there are certainly a lot worse examples out there. On the palate, there is some minerality, but the ripe fruit dominates and picks up a bit of nuttiness. The wine was like many of us at the end of the night, stumbling and needing focus. B.

Rob Regina 4 Seasons pre-Raveneau event--Thankfully no corkiness that was present in last bottle from this batch. Decanted for 3 hours and still a bit shy at first. Opened up in the glass to the classic citrus and mint elements, in a bit more of a powdery lush mouthfeel. Nice.

A few days in Burgundy; 7/13/2006-7/17/2006 (Cote d'Or): Rather neutral with citrus notes and less characteristic steely slate and mineral flavors than usual. Surprisingly light in both flavor and body, though not without focus. Enjoyable, but not up to the usual standard.

Dinner with Susan and gang--classic Raveneau with a bit more richness and alcohol due to the hot year. Still wonderful, not quite as much seashell and candied lime as usual, more viscosity and ripe fruit. But still the classic Raveneau balance of acidity, fruit and nuances such as honeyed marzipan.

Very pale in color with a green tinge. This was sacrificed to see how long we want to hold the additional bottles. It had lime, pear and stone aromas with more citrus and a touch of pineapple as it warmed up. The finish was long and aromatic. I felt like it was maybe a bit closed as there was the sense of a much bigger wine lurking below the surface. It is probably not a long-term ager (10+ years) as the acidity is present but not overwhelming as you would find in a more typical Chablis vintage.

Does not have the excess ripeness typical of this vintage. Still pretty sharp citrus chablis nose, fruit forward but not burly, nice long mineral finish which dropped a bit after 2 hours, still a very nice Chablis.

A private lunch (Restaurant Oud Sluis ***, Sluis, Netherlands): Needs time in the decanter to be coaxed out of its shell. Very intense, with a steely structure, notes of citrus, cream, wax and honey, slightly hot finish. Needs more time.

Bright and zesty nose.
Sweet fruit, tonnes of classic cheesy citrus, lovely drinking.

About 88 points. My guess on this lot is heat damage. The cork was very soaked. Although they have been good only our first bottle in 05 (shortly after delivery) reached the level of the multiple reviews. Purchased from Premier Cru.

Not a lot going on with this bottle. The flavors and aromas were similar to the previous bottle but seemed muted...maybe a food clash.
