Well aged and tasting great !! Near perfect cork easily removed from this properly cellared Sonoma County Zin blend. The blue cap has always been a go to wine, but how did it age ?? Apparently really well. Deep purple color with minor oxidation with excellent clarity. Aromas and flavors of blackberry, currant, plum, and fig with a medium finish. At or just passing peak. Excellent winemaking by Ted Seghesio.

Here's one that aged well and came through the fire unscathed. Deep red color with robust texture and subtle tannins. Great with food and ny itself. These guys rarely disappoint with their Zins.

Tasted blind. Translucent ruby color turning crimson at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose is sharp and tangy with notes of cherry, raspberry, currants, chocolate, cola and a spice that can be persistently felt. The palate is medium bodied with bright, heightened acidity and a silky texture. Flavors of currants, plum, raspberry, espresso, smoke and meat are acutely concentrated that produces a long, zingy finish with mineral-laced tannin. At this point, it seems that the wine has developed considerable age, and has reached its peak. It should be drunk NOW but could probably keep until 2019. 91+

Romance in a glass . Elegant nose of dark chocolate and tones of blue berries. Mild tannis, cocoa, ink, dark cherry notes. Long finish. This wine is still humming (surprisingly). Glad I have one more bottle.

Red and dark berries, cherris, something Italian in the bouquet. Warm, dark cherries, some sweetness, nicely balanced, full bodied, long warm finish. A very good Zin. Better then expexted.

Rich, plush, and juicy. This wine always pleases as long as it's had a few years bottle age to come together. Loads of black fruit, cassis, and a bit of leather, all held together by pillowy tannins and a medium length finish.

Bought this a few years ago at the winery but did not see it in Cellar Tracker. Drank at a party so did not take notes. Remembered as good and everyone liked. Still had years of life left.

Alcohol on the nose blows off after awhile to reveal aromas of ripe boysenberry and black pepper. The palate shows some heat up front, with ripe blue and red fruits, milk chocolate, a touch of spiciness and a slight herbal note. Hedonistic, yet interesting.

Big full bodied wine bursting with blackberry pie, pepper, and savory notes. Starts off round and lush but has a firm backbone of tannins that keep it from being to jammy. Drinking well now and for 3 or 4 more years.

A little different impression than a year ago. Still needs an hour decant or the tannins overpower. Aromas include plum/prune, blackberry, oak (vanilla, cedar, smoke), raspberry, cinnamon. On the palate add darker fruit, black pepper, leather, anise. Medium body, high acidity, high tannin, med+ finish. Either my taste buds have changed or the wine is in a little harsher spot than it was a year ago. Still a nice wine with lots of complexity, but an uneven finish.

A good, every day, go to Zinfandel. For me, some years are definitely better than others and 2009 seems to be a pretty good year. I also find their wines definitely benefit from a couple of years in the bottle to produce a nicely balanced, straight forward wine that is not an over-the-top, hot syrupy mess. Nice hint of spice up front and on the finish. It will benefit from a little air and should continue drinking nicely over the next couple of years.

Black plum/mulberry appearance. Assertive, full bodied, and creamy. Creme de cassis, blackberries, spiced plum, black pepper, and chocolate aromas and flavors precede a note of crushed rocks on the lengthy finish. Its richness of fruit combined with fine acidity and a pleasant cedar sweetness masks the high alcohol nicely. An unabashedly confident Zin.

Really fine Zin here - not a fruit bomb, but slightly restrained. Needs to be open an hour or so to get to where the power and seduction of this wine need to be. Even at 15%, is not an in your face wine. One of best Zins I have had in a few years, although not necessarily my style. Medium-bodied once it opens up with tastes of coffee and mocha, sour cherries and minerality. Went very well with fresh, grilled Alaskan Copper River Salmon.

This is my second bottle from the 09' vintage. Dark blue/purple color with a thick rim. Nose has sweet blackberries, raspberries, vanilla and coconut. This may sound like it's over powered by oak, but I did not find it to be over oaked. Full and rich mouth feel but with typical Zinfandel characteristics from the fruit. Lots of raspberries and dark plums. It had more fresh acidity than I could remember from the previous bottle I tasted. The flavors reminds me of a fruit garden late in the summer when all the raspberries are ripe and warmed by the sun. This will last for several more years, but it's beautiful to enjoy now. Would let it breath for a little while/decant.

God repræsentant for zinfandel.

Liked this better than the last bottle. Jammy, black fruit on the nose. Fruit forward, but not overly so. Mostly black fruit on the palate, and better integrated than the last bottle (perhaps Safeway did a better job handling this one). Great with pizza. Good QPR.

This bottle was very different from others of the same vintage. Had an earthy, almost pinot aroma. Wine hadn't gone bad, but the aroma was unusual and not expected. Chalk the bottle variation up to different retailers.

This wine has some really great spice to it! Decanted before drinking. The taste is kind of short for me. Its almost a quick bite and then slowly goes back. Overall a good choice I think. Going to enjoy it with some Indian food. I'm guess I'm in a spicy mood tonight!

Popped and poured. Improved with time. Brambly, jammy style that tilts a little too much to the sweet side for my taste. Fruit-forward nose of plum and blackberry; black fruits and oak/vanilla on the palate. Medium tannins give it enough grip to save this wine from a treachly overindulgence. Good midweek quaff with a bowl of pasta.

Med-dark ruby with purple hues. Nose on the rim, prune and blueberry. Fruit forward, mouth watering acidity and just-adequate tannins. Finish shows character and length, as moderate but persistent tannins offset the fruit late palate. "New World" from variety to style. Excellent varietal characteristics. Not a wine for, say, grilled steak; but, rather, requires something zesty (e.g., pizza, red pasta sauce, parmigiana) to offset an almost-jammy character. Not a variety for me, but excellent wine.

Definitely needs Vinturi and/or decanting. PNP initial reaction is hot and thin. But it rounds out nicely with some time and air. Cherry and plum, with hint of caramel and floral and pepper. Almost Pinot-like, with light tannin level and nice fruitiness. Want to keep re-filling the glass...

Quite a good and still very youthful and quintessential entry level CA zin enjoyed recently at the monthly Hickory Wine Club tasting as part of a CA zin flite. I do recommend this wine but it is very young and would benefit from a lot of air right now - at the average CT price this wine has a good QPR. Very dark, somewhat hot and alcoholic, big and bold, spicy and full bodied, not at all subtle at this point but I do believe that with 3-5 years this will smooth out. Dark fruit and pepper on the bold nose with primary flavors of plum, brambles, black pepper and a hint of dust on the late palate.

Drank the 2007, 2008, and 2009 side-by-side. Upon first taste, this was the group's least favorite, but after allowing it to open up over the next hour it was right there with the 08, and just behind the 07. Classic zin fruit and spice.

Tonight this wine seemed hot and peppery, and was a bit disappointing. Popped and poured, so I guess I should've given it some air time. Have a bit left over; will see if tomorrow is better. Day 3: much, much better. Left in the fridge for two days, and cannot believe how much better the wine became. I didn't change the rating, but my note to self is that this wine needs to breathe at least an hour or longer before serving. Also cannot believe how little I know about wine...

Deep burgundy color. Outstanding nose of brambly fruit and dusty pepper. Palate offers semi-sweet black raspberries, underbrush mid-palate and black tea on the finish. The finish is somewhat clipped and medium dry. Well-managed oak by this consistently fine producer.

Poured through Vinturi ... Seghesio continues to be a great go-to Zin. It has remained reasonably priced, well-balanced, eminently drinkable and throughly enjoyable through all three of the vintages I've now tried. Popped my first '09 and found it bright purple and brimming with blackberry. Dry and a hint of spice and definitely NOT over-oaked. Pretty much everything a Cali Zin should be in my book. Big and bold, but NOT over-the-top and gloppy. Not overly complicated, but completely enjoyable. Another winner from Seghesio and makes me glad I got a case.

Cranberries, dark sweet Cherries and very little oak on the nose. On the palette Rose floral notes, sweet red fruit and not much oak. A little thin but fine with me as I'm not of fan of spicy over the top wines. Good balance. The finish was of decent length. Had with Steak Fajitas.

Nose of sage, white pepper and cedar over dark black and purple fruits. Briary berries, plum and blackberry. Nicely balanced zin on the palate, with good ratio of acid to tannin to fruit. Tasty dark berry and plum fruit intermingled with nice spice and pepper notes. Nicely structured. Finishes on an almost blueberry tart note. Not too jammy or spicy or alcoholic on the palate, so just the way I like my zins!

Opaque purple, strong nose, plum and dark fruit jam on the front palate, peppery finish. Sweet finish at first which seems cloying, but give the wine 30-45min to open. The peppery flavors come on after time and so do the tannins. Had it with rack of lamb and while not a bad match, there was not enough tannins and acid to stand up to the lamb. This is a well made classic zin for the money. Seghesio avoided over oaking this beautiful fruit...thank you!

Drank as part of 6 bottle Zinfandel Wine dinner • 2009 Seghesio (dark. mid—heavy weight zin, dark berry fruit with lots of plum. 88/89 points) • 2007 Sky Vineyards Mount Veeder (nice nose of lavender, bright cherry color, looks lightweight. Tasted berries and cherries, had more acid than the other zins. Not everbody liked a zin with acidity, but was very good for me. VG QPR, and close to wine of the night. Everybody will split a case for the price. 91.5 pts) • 2002 Sky Vineyards Mount Veeder (initial nose was fantastic, bright and fresh flowers. Taste did not reflect the nose, and with more air it lost its nose and acidity which dropped rating to 86 points.) • 2008 Green & Red Vineyards Chiles Canyon Vineyards (dark blue/purple. Strawberry, full mouth, black cherry. much, much rounder and fuller than the Sky which throws one off a bit. 89/90 points) • 2009 Green & Red Vineyards Chiles Mill (more complex than the G&R Canyon, better of the two G&R 91points.) • 2009 Robert Biale Vineyards Black Chicken (Dark purple, Dark heavy fruit, tea, dried herbs, very good long finish. The wine of the night. 92 points!)

This is the only zinfandel that I buy with any regularity. Really reliable. Dark berry fruit dominates with a hint of plum. Plenty of fruit but not over the top, and some interesting mineral and spice flavors on the midpalate add to the enjoyment. A decent finish. All in all a go-to wine for when we're in the mood for something a little darker and bigger.

A fruit bomb, the taste of ripe dark fruits overwhelms everything else. If I'd tasted this blind, I don't think I would have guessed that it's a zinfandel. Not much to speak of in terms of spice or finish. Overall, it's very mellow and drinkable, just not my preferred style. If you like jammy, you'll probably love this.

Very dark purple-red color. Aerated into glass. Nose has nice fruit, blackberry, blueberry pie, some herbalness, cedar, spice. The palate is round and balanced, with nice firm tannins, medium finish, black and blue fruits along with oak, pepper, and some anise. I found this more vibrant initially than day 2 myself. This was in 3rd place in a 3-bottle tasting with my daughter and her 20 something friends. Each wine as served blind and the tasting included an '03 Trapiche Gran Medalla Malbec and an '05 Caymus Cab. This was a very nice example of a Zin with a deep purple color. It offered plenty of up front fruit with just enough sweetness and spice but this was quickly forgotten as the other 2 wines were poured.

Popped and poured. Medium-plus purple/black cherry hue. Forward nose filled with aromas of spicy bramble fruits, raspberry jam, graham cracker, anise, and a touch of oak. Medium to medium-plus body, elegant in mouth. On the palate, this shows youthful fruit that, while showing ripe, never veers into jammy territory and expresses itself as dark berries, cherry, and currant. The fruit is accompanied by a herbaceous streak and toasted oak, which lends additional notes of smoke, mild cloves, crushed pepper, and other spices. A bit of heat too. The tannins are chalky and touch astringent on the moderate close. A youthful Zin that never shows as too heavy and is actually quite elegant, especially in comparison with the many larger examples that regularly flow out of CA. Not for the long haul, but could definitely use another 1-3+ years so that the tannins smooth out some more.

A disclaimer before I begin...Seghesio is one of my favorite wineries. All of their wines are very fine, the family are terrific people and the tasting room experience is top notch. I only hope that little changes with their new owners, Leucadia. Deep purple color to the rim. KEY: give this wine, a day to open up. It initially offered a green pepper nose that hid the fruit, but this aroma eventually blew off. The single vineyard Seghesio's are like this also...they take their time showing their wonders. Be patient. For an entry level Zin, a wonderful complex nose of plum, dark blackberry, a hint of spicy licorice. The taste is a medium bodied, dark berry fruit, tons of peppery spiciness, with a tart acidity; still rather rough on the tannins, but a sweet extended finish that lingers on and on. A beautifully well made, balanced wine that deserves some smokey grilled meat.

Wonderful aromas of wild berry with overtones of vanilla and spice. I have had the last five vintages of this wine and find the quality, flavor and style consistent year after year. One could not go wrong with any of this producer's products. Very fruit forward providing a mouthful of dark berries made in an approachable, smooth, flavorful style that provides a solid finish. Not outstanding but always solid and consistent. Enjoyed with BBQ spare ribs and beef brisket.

The nose showed crushed red and blue berries with holiday spices and a sheen of vanilla. On the palate, it was rich and plush with sweet cinnamon spice and sweet blackberry jam. The finish was long with brambly fruits, but ultimately, this wine tasted more like a dessert than Zinfandel. I'm sure there are many that will fully enjoy this style but it is far too overwhelming for my tastes.

Another beautiful example of a mass produced Zinfandel from the Seghesio family. Bittersweet as it was just announced that the family is selling to a conglomerate.
I've long been a fan of the Seghesio family's deft hand with Zinfandel. More often than not, they knock it out of the ballpark. They make quite a few smaller bottlings which are usually stunning but they always make their largest production, this county bottling, very well and I fear that will change in the coming years.
Despite the 15% abv, there is no heat in this bottle. Just rich, acceptably jammy Zin. Thick, juicy and delicious with great black fruit and gracious tannins.
This may be the last great big family made Zins.
Buy it up and drink through 2016.

Seghesio knocks it out of the ballpark, again. Terrific zinfandel. Red cherry, red raspberry, spice box and some medium tannins. We put this up against the 2007 Ridge Lytton Springs. Both were great, but was liking the Seghesio just a bit more, which surprised me. That spiciness did the trick.

Really enjoyed my first bottle of this Sonoma wine. Like the finish and actually thought it had good body. I would consider this a semi-value at $19.79. Opened up quickly.

With spicy pasta...excellent, but difficult to taste. Nice aroma and flavor. Will drink the 2nd half of the bottle with something less spicy to better show the wine. After one sampling we would buy again.

Another solid vintage from Seghesio. No decant drinks well on night 1. Slightly hot and tannic finish. Mostly raspberry and medium toast oak, perhaps more complexity with time.

Big, round and soft. Conceals its 15% alc magnificently. Violets and ripe plums on the nose. Tannins are soft and acidity is minimal. Better than the 08 when it was first released but not as good as the 07 with a couple years of bottle age. Read more...

Elegant! had the 2006 a few years ago - was quite nice. This was delicious as well. No decanting, but left to sit in the glass for 30 minutes each night. Nice black friuts, with a little minerality afterwards. Not a huge leather bomb, slightly european in style, which I am really starting to like.

Out for dinner and had a bottle which was decanted for about 20 mins. This is a little young, so may get more interesting over the coming 1-2 yrs. I think general comments are all fair. Nose is full of fruit - blows you over and some creamy quality also. The palate is similar - a boatload of berry fruit with soft tannin and a low amount of acid. Dry still, but a tad of sweetness. Others have said this is "flabby" and maybe i get that, i would like more "structure" to this i think also. Needs more backbone, but as GV said with the '08 - this would appeal to lots of people, and be great for a crowd at a party!

Opened and drank over the next four hours. The nose does not give much away due to its youth and alcohol content but there is a hint of ripe cherry deep within. Very light on its feet for a zin, not jammy but not empty. Too young to give much complexity but there is a range of distinct seghesio dark fruit. Interested to see where it will evolve to. Right now just good.

I have tasted one previous vintage of this wine, and remembered it as quite a nice, big wine. But this one was not at all my cup of tea. Too mouch oaky stuff, a bit jammy and with a warm, almost burned taste.

Dark with a deep burgundy hue. Aromatically challenged. Flavors were initially thin, artificial & manipulated. Low acidity & short on spice. Does show firm, drying tannins on the back. Flavors drmatically improved with air.Turned out to be a "solid" effort, but nothing like the spectacular `07. [15% abv.; $21.00].i

At first it was surprisingly demanding with lots of dark blue fruit. After a while it settled down but was still big but well balanced, I recon it will only be better with some time.
Less spice and pepper on the nose than last year but more subtle fragrances including violet and fresh bread. I don't the wine is flabby (as others have said) but the more subdued pepper and spice result in a broader, less impactful but rounder wine. Your really taste this wine on the sides of your tongue. The mouth is rounded, with great dark berries and, while less spice than last year, a great balance of spice and tannin. I also get more oak than last year's offering. I give it an 89 because this first taste was less distinctive than last years but, as it is more rounded, this wine may age better than last year's.

This one was way too flabby. I'm a huge fan of Seghesio S/C but this is not reminiscent of previous years. All I got was sweet ripe fruit and heat. Where went the spice and acidity? Hopefully it was just a fluke.

Much better on day two - flabby and showing heat on day one, half of the bottle was left in the fridge overnight and the result was much more pleasurable, with plenty of acidity to balance the fruit. If you open now give it an hour or two in the decanter.

Tried at tasting. I have had at least 3 different vintages of this wine. This is the first time I feel the heat/alcohol on a Seghesio. Maybe too young? That being said, good fruit as always, just not my favorite Zin at this price point.

It should be drunk NOW but could probably keep until 2019. 91+

• 2007 Sky Vineyards Mount Veeder (nice nose of lavender, bright cherry color, looks lightweight. Tasted berries and cherries, had more acid than the other zins. Not everbody liked a zin with acidity, but was very good for me. VG QPR, and close to wine of the night. Everybody will split a case for the price. 91.5 pts)
• 2002 Sky Vineyards Mount Veeder (initial nose was fantastic, bright and fresh flowers. Taste did not reflect the nose, and with more air it lost its nose and acidity which dropped rating to 86 points.)
• 2008 Green & Red Vineyards Chiles Canyon Vineyards (dark blue/purple. Strawberry, full mouth, black cherry. much, much rounder and fuller than the Sky which throws one off a bit. 89/90 points)
• 2009 Green & Red Vineyards Chiles Mill (more complex than the G&R Canyon, better of the two G&R 91points.)
• 2009 Robert Biale Vineyards Black Chicken (Dark purple, Dark heavy fruit, tea, dried herbs, very good long finish. The wine of the night. 92 points!)

Plenty of fruit but not over the top, and some interesting mineral and spice flavors on the midpalate add to the enjoyment. A decent finish. All in all a go-to wine for when we're in the mood for something a little darker and bigger.

A more elegant zin. Sweet berry nose leading to raspberry, vanilla, spice. Very smooth, enjoyable now.

Tasted at Dry Creek Passport Weekend. Outside of Seghesio, this was the best Zin we tasted during the weekend. Seghesio had two other Zins that were equal to or marginally better, but when I compared against price, this wine was the hands down winner for me.

Had at Auction Wine Tasting party as the last wine to go with chocolate cake and raspberries. Not a good match. Wine was not big - it was ordinary.

Nice nose of blueberries, a little bit of pepper that went quite well with the lamb that it was paired. Medium concentration. Fresh. Smooth. Not a power house of complexity but a good enjoyable wine.

little finish, but a good overall body and flavor. Fruit is a bit less apparent than in the 2008.

dark ruby in color. nose is nice, but not particularly memorable. clean, red fruits on the palate. nice spice, and tannins are well balanced overall. nice wine. not great wine, but did well with pasta with a red sauce with prosciutto and mushrooms. still, for the price, i'll look around for something more memorable.

A solid effort with spice, sweet fruit, floral and oak. Medium finish and balanced overall. No heat that I typically get from Cali Zin.

Nice zin. Typical black pepper with some black berry to go with it. Opened up quickly. Not a ton of acid, but easy to drink. full bodied with nice finish. Perfect for a half bottle treat.

Not like I remembered it last time... maybe as someone else suggested, some major bottle variation. This wine was sweet and unfocused.

Nose of sweet and spicy dark fruits, yogurt and molasses. On the palette: dark fruit, strong acidity, impressive tannins and an odd subtle vanilla yogurt hint on the finish.
