  • This vintage was the birth year of my eldest son. I bought several dozen bottles when the wine was 2 years old and they have been cellared perfectly in a commercial cellar. I have written several notes on the wine on Cellar Tracker over the years. It his 16th birthday and he is sampling 1/2 a glass with me. He is also writing notes.
The wine has improved with time. It retains it's introspective feminine nature and although it is from Australia's Margaret River region it most closely resembles the St Julien subregion of the left bank in Bourdeaux.
A beautiful wine that has gracefully evolved over 16 years.

    Appearance: Mahogany edge. Semi-opaque.
Bouquet: Integrated. Primary aromas of dark cherries, blueberries, lemon grass. Black pepper. Spice.
Palate: Integrated. Dark cherries, blackcurrant syrup, blueberry, gooseberry, raspberry, blackberry ,green olives. Roses. Wet earth.Mint. Milk coffee. Aged characteristics of mushroom. Well balanced. Great length.
Technical: Riedel Bordeaux glasses. Drinking temperature 15 deg C. Best between 45 minutes to 90 minutes after opening. NS

  • Really enjoyable Cab blend drinking at its peak. Fragrant black fruit but not too dark, cedar, bramble and some earthiness. Excellent balance good line and length and fine acidity. Refined. Tannins are smooth, almost silky. Excellent QPR.

  • Drinking at its peak I would say. Decanted an drunk soon after, deep garnet colour still very clear, no sediment, silky smooth tannins and lovely long taste right down the middle.

  • Screwcap, 13.5% alc. Dark crimson.

Deep, rich, and fruity aroma, with blackcurrant and raspberry, bay leaves, wet gravel, ink, and supporting cedar.

The wine hits the mouth with a burst of dark-fruited flavour. Some sweet raspberry and autumn leafiness remains on the aftertaste. Fine dusty tannins.

Opinion: The palate is impressively rich for a 14 year old “second wine” from Margaret River. Still relatively primary, though it has fleshed out of lot compared with earlier bottles. Drinking well, but no rush.

67% Cabernet, 17% Merlot, 16% Malbec. 18 months in French Oak.

  • Smells of tamarillo, something quite distinct about Margaret River cabernet blends. This isn’t too much so, it’s darker fruited than that on the palate.

Needs some breathing, it’s still fresh (for 14 yo).

    13.5%, screwcap.

  • Exposed to extreme heat over the summer and lost all depth and body 1.5 - 2 hours after opening. Still very good though.

  • Still has a mauve edge. This wine is aging slowly. Smells and tastes like a young wine. Blackcuurant, blackberry, blueberry, cherries with lemon grass. Well balanced. Great intensity. Best after one hour. My guess is that it will be at its best between 2022-2037.

  • Drinking fairly well from the get go. Quite a decent amount of smoky cedar on the nose here with dark fruit, blackberry, blueberry, bramble, and aniseed. Sweet and sour. Medium bodied and not too much dry extract or tannins. Should hold for a number of years still.

  • Screwcap, 13.5% alc. Youthful, inky-red colour.

Austere on opening; all structure and little fruit. Pencil shavings, tobacco, wet rocks, blackcurrant, and eucalypt. Pan juices and lipstick in background.

Lithe and structured on the palate. The dusty tannins are quite assertive, with acid drawing saliva from all corners of the mouth. The eucalypt runs right through the wine, resulting in a green presentation. Upon airing (2 days) chocolate appears, with a fresher and more vibrant nose and a fruit dominated palate heading towards redcurrant. Surprisingly, shows a bit of alcohol heat in the mouth, despite the 13.5% on the label.

Opinion: A wine of 2 halves. On day one, reticent and quite green with a strong eucalypt note. With airing, the fruit emerges and shifts in the flavour spectrum. It can’t quite shake all of that eucalyptus though. All in all, a very nice, youthful wine in need of cellaring. Try again in 5 years.

  • Opened first of these with some Italian. Not decanted. Medium body, red fruits, tannins fairly soft. Very drinkable though not sure if memorable? Need to try when not in restaurant.

  • When I first opened this wine it was very bright, and not very enjoyable. Not wanting to think I'd blown my money I thought it might be better with some cellaring. Almost five years later it still retains the brightness and the fruit has receded further into the background. Disappointing...

  • Fresh black currants, black berries, tar and tobacco with a very noticeable gum leaf character to begin with. With air the gum leaf eventually falls into the background and a bright raspberry flavour comes forward. Clean acidity, nicely structured. This isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

  • 2007 Vintage Tasting (Bronte, Sydney): medium depth red.
lovely ripe red berries and lightly herbal tobacco leaf and cedar.
well balanced, smooth and with good length. red berries and light cedar in good balance, some sherbet zest, delicious drinking now.

  • Glossy colour; stylish Cabernet, fresh, smart, in full flow; this has hit its stride, polished red fruit, tannins resolved, integrated, very well balanced ; well mannered finish. Plenty left in the tank. Now & next 5 years.

  • {screwcap, 13.5%} Middle-aged deepish garnet colour. Assertive, intense nose, of basil-and-herb infused currant aromas, right in the mainstream of new-world Bdx blends with serious pretentions. The cedary quality on the nose also carries through on the palate; there are medium level dusty tannins, blackcurrant and tart cranberry flavours; it's only really approaching the first stage of development. Medium-weight, with low/medium acid, and a quite drying, astringent (although not truly tannic) texture to it, culminating in a medium length finish, a touch strident. I'd hope for a bit more seductiveness with further cellaring; there's another 8-10 years left here easily.

  • The wine approaching 9 is developing a complex bouquet with a mixture of berries, vine, floral, forest floor and cedar aromas. The palate is slightly unbalanced towards sourness and there is a cough medicine cherry flavour that mars it. Other bottles in recent years have been better. Score 96

  • Classic Margaret River Cabbie blend. Blackcurrant, black olives, a little smokey cigar box and a little earthiness. Heaps of life left.

  • Bay leaf, pencil shavings, dried herbs, bright cabernet fruit. Plush, ripe, yum. Very good. Smells and tastes of region and variety. Sweet fruit, red and black. Soft tannin. Delicious and highly drinkable. Drink now or hold 5+ (92 Very good wine)

  • This purpled rimmed near opaque core wine gives up pencil shavings, blackcurrant, blueberries, cherries, roses, wet earth cafe au lait chocolate and olives. It is elegant and full bodied with good length. Reminds of a classed growth Bordeaux. Poured into Riedel Bordeaux glasses at 16 degrees C. Needs at least 1 hour in the decanter. Score 97

  • Drank three bottles over dinner. Good 2+ hour decant. This wine us drinking very well now, it is quite well balanced and there is plenty of interest on the palate with nice fruit. I'd imagine if drunk blind you would pick the wine as French. Very happy I have more in the cellar as this will hold well.

  • Drunk over 3 days. Started out quite lean, showing more sour edged fruit with bramble and leaf flavours. The wine gained weight and depth over the following 2-3 hours and opened up nicely with cassis, cherry and dusty wood tones balancing the wine. Acidity was bright and well integrated and tannins were silky and playing a supporting role. The wine showed best on the second day suggesting a good 5-7 years of life ahead of it. While this will continue to evolve, I'm not sure it will actually improve that much. I'd err towards drinking now with a 2-3 hour decant.

  • Unfortunately opened up bottle without the benefit of a decant. Too closed up for my tastes. Fortunately I left some in the bottle for the second night and it provided a hint of what this wine can become. It will be another 5 years before I go for my next bottle.

  • This comes across as a surprising big wine, but has an elegant twist to it. Quite old world in style, it does have enough fruit to reveal itself as a new world wine. Very smooth with plenty of youthful dark fruit. With a couple of hours decant this is drinking quite well now, but I am sure few more years of patience will improve it even more. A very good "Margaret" from Woodlands and if you do have some of this in your cellar, pat yourself on the back!

  • This wine's vintage is the same year my eldest some was born so I bought several cases. I have followed it over several years and it still looks and tastes young. My son had his seventh birthday today and he smelt the wine (not allowed to sip). "Cherries and olive oil" he said.
Mauve semi opaque body. Cherry liqueur. Black currant, blueberries, cafe au lait wet earth and olives. It is close to full bodied and relatively elegant. It is Margaret River in character but also St Estephe. Screw top. Decantered one hour. Riedel glasses. Will he be enjoying this when he is 30? Score 97

Elegant long palate with soft mouth feel. Peaks at 75 minutes in the decanter stored at 16 degrees C and starts to fade at 105 minutes. Drunk from Riedel bordeaux glasses.Score 96

  • Consistent to previous bottle. Still needs more time.

  • Gorgeous herbal blackcurrant Cabernet flavours. Pristine wine. Bouncy bright acidity (a bit too much), promises a long future even if the wine is not high on tannin, fortunately the alcohol is more restrained than some Australian cabernets.

PS the label says 13.5% alcohol but then all the Woodlands labels say this so it isn't clear what the true figure is. I wish they respected their consumers enough to put the proper figure.

  • The two bottles of this I had at Christmas were both very good, but far better after being opened for 24 hours. I'm tipping this wine will not be ready until 2017.

  • This is one of the best 2007 Woodlands Margaret I have tasted. Having bought several dozen of these wines and cellared them in temperature controlled environment this wine is one of many I have sampled over the last few years. Unlike the previous tasting in 2012 the youthful mauve edge has disappeared. The nose is predominantly a ripe jammy blackcurrant supported by blackberry, fragrant notes, cigar box, milk coffee, smoke and rosemary. There are earth and seashell undertones. The wine reminds me of a classed growth St Estephe. It is elegant and brooding. The palate is silky smooth and rich. This softness of the palate feel is something that appears to be more pronounced than the last tasting. My comments were that this wine was young and unintergrated in 2010. It is well intergrated now 3 years later. The flavours reflect the nose and linger on the palate. Drunk between 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours and better toward 1 1/2 hours. Estimated temperature around 18 degrees.
Can this wine improve further? We will see.

  • Screwcap, 13.5%. Decanted and consumed after 2-3 hours of breathing. This is aging very nicely and is open and approachable. The nose indicates ripe but restrained fruit, hinting towards savoury and leafy characters. Black current shares the stage with black current leaf, bramble, cherry pit, herbs and wet vegetation. The palate is full of crunchy fresh flavours, bright acids and the tannins are suave, silky and are beginning to resolve. Medium concentration and intensity. I wouldn't hesitate to drink this now, but think it will continue to evolve for another 10 years.

  • Glossy; classic MR brightness, leafy; polished fruit, smooth tannins, heightened acidity, bold, forceful finish. Needs plenty of air. Leave alone for 12+ months.

  • Recent notes from others are notably accurate. Descriptors I especially agree with include "youthful wine, blackberry liqueur, herbs, blackcurrant, [dark] cherries, some cigar box, palate is medium to full bodied, slightly sour [not a criticism]; amalgam of dark fruits, mint and eucalypt."
I find the aftertaste long, but the palate is not fully coated - perhaps the famous Cabernet hole? Also I get a little alcohol heat (as well as most of the bitterness) on exit. The deliciousness of the fruit overcomes most nit picking. Delightful.

  • Mauve edge suggests a youthful wine and this is reflected on the nose with blackberry liqueur herbs blackcurrant cherries. There is also some milk coffee and cigar box. The palate is medium to full bodied slightly sour which is attenuated with food (goes well with lamb). Drunk at 18 degrees and best after 1 hour in the decanter as the nose opens up and the palate becomes richer. Oxidized at 6 hours.

  • Translucent; initially cherried, then an amalgam of dark fruits;
sleek, polished, crisp/sculpted, smart, good definition ; fully integrated, extended. (Double decanted & served. Needed 2 hours to fully open & holding up well after 8 hours).

  • 5 years old and still has a mauve edge. Nose offers raspberry herbs milk coffee and blackberry liqueur with blackcurrant cherries and cigar box especially from the empty glass. The palate is elegant and slightly sour which I have noted in previous bottles. A lovely Bordeaux style red. 2 previous bottles over the last 2 years have score 94 then 95. I think it should improve further.

Blackcurrant jam Raspberries Milk coffee Smokey Pencil shavings Cigars (best after 1 hour in decanter) Drunk at 18 degrees.

Palate elegant. Well balanced. Good length

It will be hard not to drink this wine before it ages.

  • Deep almost opaque purple wine. Herbaceous brambly nose with BBQ meat, yeast, eucalypt and mint coming to the party. I also get some slight farmyard tones and a touch of tomato. In the mouth it's medium plus acid and gritty tannins. More berry comes to the fore here but it is by no means a jammy wine. It has a medium plus mouthfeel and long, but slightly course, finish. I really like this wine and need to stop drinking it all before it has any chance to age.

  • brambly fruit with cedar, mint, a certain meatiness - which might just be the flavour of the toasted oak which me in mind of bbqs - slight clove and plenty of ethanol on the nose. In the mouth acid - which, even though it is well balanced, has that slightly 'wrong' taste that I sometimes get which leads me to believe that it has been added and tannin around blackcurrant and sweet cedar and leather. Hints of pencil shavings. Fortunately I really like this.

  • Margaret River quick stop tasting tour; 4/6/2010-4/7/2010 (Margaret River): Great mouthfeel, great fruit, great tannin. Oh, this is joyous. What a lovely wine and what a surprise to find it here in a rough hewn room on the side of an ugly and tired shed.

  • Vibrant purple red. Aromas jumping from the glass - cassis, sour edged cherry, herbs and a touch of oak. Nicely integrated though. The palate is linear, persistant and showing a hint of licorice. Medium bodied and elegant, yet nicely concentrated. A long finish that will hopefully open up more with age. Look forward to the others over the coming years.....
