(GODOLPHIN) 2005 Godolphin Dear Friends, Let’s just cut to the chase - no flowery descriptions or obtuse use of adjectives below. One thing I can’t stand is grown adults complaining - ok, maybe I phrased that incorrectly, what I meant was “grown adults complaining about something that I have no control over”. Sometimes, no matter what I write about wild yeasts, dedication of the winemaker, etc it’s about one thing - price (it’s probably always about price but it shouldn’t be - unless everyone is comparing apples to apples with regard to handling, provenance, shipping costs, etc which rarely happens). This is definitely a case where it’s about price. This issue has been the number one complaint in my “in” box this year (even more than “why can’t you ship my wine” and “will my wine ever arrive?”) and frankly I have no control over it - the dumping of the 2005 Godolphin. I’ve penned editorials and updates about this, I even predicted it last October when a lowly 93pt rating was bestowed upon it (I use the word “lowly” of course tongue in cheek). The fact is that I have no control over pricing from a winery’s end and when they come out with a wine at a higher price and then decide to sell it for almost half a year later (or something like that), it’s their business. Not sure why we never get any emails when we’re the lowest price in the world on 1000 other wines every year...maybe everyone just expects it. Anyone that’s actually tasted this wine lately like Josh Raynolds (after a few years in bottle) will be pretty shocked at how good it is - I was, but it needs a full evening or more to open up (even 24 hours of decant). Last summer, I downplayed this wine after tasting it for the 3rd or 4th time but I have to admit, the wine is coming into its own and I think it has the chance to be as long-lived as its 2005 sibling, the Amon-Ra (I actually think the Godolphin is showing better now than the 2005 Amon-Ra and it probably will for the next 2-3 years): Let’s be serious everyone, for this price, the 2005 Godolphin is a steal of a deal - case closed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED at this price for an extra dimension of clarity and intensity missing from most wines in this region: 2005 Amon-Ra “Godolphin” Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Aus7980
