(CLOS DU BEAUJEU Boulay Sancerre) Sancerre Dear Friends, Boulay has done it again with their Clos du Beaujeu and Mont Damnes, two wines that have become a beacon and a blueprint for other producers in the region to follow. As far as Sancerre is concerned, Boulay is working at a level above nearly everyone else. Unlike many of their neighbors that have gained recent notoriety and acclaim, the Boulay family still works for you – they respect how hard it is at the present moment (economically) and they’ve resisted the temptation to match pricing with the other “first growth” quality producers in Sancerre. Even though their wines are arguable among best in the appellation (they are certainly the highest rated/lowest priced portfolio by Tanzer over the last 3-4 years), they’ve retained a sensible pricing structure on the high-end wines with a philosophy that is very easy to support. Not only are they looking out for their consumer base but they are also some of the kindest individuals you are likely to come across. They tell it like it is without games, gimmicks or other and the wines reflect this no-nonsense, unmanipulated approach (which are some of Sancerre’s purest examples). Both wines below are VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as crystal-clear representations of their vintage and vineyard (mixed with a dose of unexplainable ferry dust that sets the very finest wines apart from their peers). There is no clear-cut favorite and one is not “better” than the other – both will make an appearance in my personal cellar. As usual, very little Boulay came to the US and in 2008 even less than the norm. While the attention and critical acclaim has been nice for them, it has also put added pressure on allocations - please let Niki know your interest at your earliest convenience: 2008 Gerard Boulay Sancerre “Monts Damnes” - A beautiful, floral wine that lives on its nervous and tensile character while riding a tightrope of elegance, white fruit extract and solid rock – thrilling: 2008 Gerard Boulay Sancerre “Clos du Beaujeu” - The 2008 Clos du Beaujeu is a fantastic wine – it has the overall presence of a grand-cru level example that opens layer by layer over many hours of air contact. Built for ageing, this wine has a track record of up to 20-25 years of evolution but it is so darn tough to resist tonight - a few hours in the decanter are all I need to convince myself that 20 years is just too long to wait. A harmonic and powerful expression of this hillside vineyard near Chavignol that will tantalize and serve to educate the palate: This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance. Please give us your maximum number up to 24/each wine and we will allocate accordingly To order: niki@garagistewine.com The Boulay is set to depart the cave – it will arrive in early October (please check OARS for local pick up after October 15th). It will ship during the Fall shipping season. Out of state orders will be held for free under ideal storage conditions (56 degrees/70%humidity) until shipping is possible. (BOULAY Clos Beaujeu Sancerre) Sancerre Magnum Dear Friends, Maybe this is a bit crazy for a Monday afternoon but this is my only chance to have this parcel bottled and shipped prior to summer. That being said, this is our annual Boulay magnum offer and it's very dear to my heart. Say what you will about the obscurity of grand-cru worthy Sancerre but Gerard Boulay remains one of the finest vintners in the world - his passion and attention to detail (as well as his terroir) make him something of the Ramonet or Lafon of Sancerre - his wine stands the test of time as one of the most authentic renditions of Sauvignon Blanc that exists and it ages in a spectacular fashion as well (up to 20 years or more). As far as Clos de Beaujeu, this is a wine I purchase every year - I don't even look at the vintage. In magnum, Boulay bottles a special parcel of the Clos and this format should age for a very long time. In general, 2008 produced wines that can be among the most concentrated ever made - all while maintaining a back bone of massive acidity and minerality that had many vintners I visited giggling in delight (others were not as lucky and they produced green, unripe wine of variable quality). In a similar fashion to 2007, success is not across the board but the best vineyards and vintners made amazing wine that is like a cross between Meursault Perrieres and Monts Damnes. Some vintners told me they thought their wine could age for 40 years and others (in the unlucky bunch) said closer to 2-4 years - a massive discrepancy. One thing is for sure, tasting the 2008 wines from this area (especially from lesser areas like Quincy and Menetou-Salon) is eye-opening. The 2008 Beaujeu is like a cross of 2005 and 2007, it has the impact of 2005 but the tensile, shimmering quality of 2007. This parcel will be bottled expressly for you. Like the Passopisciaro from this weekend, it is sure to be a collector's treasure in the years to come and the price is among the very lowest of its kind (for white wine with this level of pedigree or potential ageing ability). If you are looking for well-priced large format examples to serve in a dinner party setting, this would be an outstanding choice (especially if those in attendance were knowledgeable enthusiasts). This bottle would also be show-stopping at a high-end wedding ceremony or pre-rehearsal dinner. This lot of magnums is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance. VERY RARE - VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: 2008 Gerard Boulay Sancerre "Clos de Beaujeu" 1.5lt They will ship during the fall season.
