(BERINGER Private Reserve Cabernet) Cabernet Dear Friends, Deals come and go but a few of them cause even me to perk up my eyes - this is one of them. Regardless of vintage, we seem to get requests for the Private Reserve year in and year out. The wine has nothing to do with the Garagiste mantra, small production or anything artisanal but (in my mind) it's perfectly fine to take a break from the madness once in a while. With the 2006 version, we have one of Napa's stalwart wines with the critical praise to back up the long list of fine vintages that have preceded it (Tanzer does not hand out 93s like candy so the 2006 is obviously cut from a serious mold). If you ask the winery they will tell you the hallmark of this vintage is balance and reflection - it tastes of Napa without all the smoke and mirrors - sort of an old-school throwback from a modern source (in a sense, that does resonate with the Garagiste philosophy). Instead of pooh-poohing this just because it's Beringer, I like to keep my eyes and options open for the benefit of everyone reading this missive and I've done just that. Here goes... While they make room for the 2007, we have a crazy deal on our hands that does not require a lot of research: This parcel has impeccable provenance: 2006 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon "Private Reserve" Napa Valley Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA CA8840
