Richard Leroy is making the best Chenin Blanc in Anjou I am even more thoroughly convinced today after tasting his compelling 2005 Les Clos des Rouliers and his 2005 Les Noels des Montebenault. These wines are some of the most concentrated, complex and convincing Chenins I have had from Anjou. Sorry Mark Angeli there is a new superstar in town. I know very little about him except from this insane thread on wine therapy. All I know is that Mr. Leroy is a huge fan of German Riesling and his wines show the opacity and terroir expression of great Mosel Riesling. Incredible flavor, great acidity and wonderful textures. The finishes just stayed with you and the wines were vibrant and alive on the palate. These wines stole the show at the Bowler tasting for me and I will tuck away some in my cellar as they have a great future ahead of them. I cannot get these wines out of my head. I had a bottle of the 2004 Les Clos des Rouilers and it was lovely stuff but the '05s here are really just amazing. They have everything you could want plus the stamp of a great wine in that there is a unique, umami if you will, quality about them. He is a relative secret now but it will be known soon about the greatness of these wines. 2006 Richard Leroy Anjou Les Noëls de Montbenault which comes from calcaire-volcanic soils is the essence of pure minerals with wonderfully vivid oak-tinged almond flavors and pears galore. Showing alot of baby fat with wonderful purity. Just incredible. A great showing for both the Leroy 2006s. - Rockss and Fruit, September 25, 2007 The domaine is divided into two distinct parcels, both planted with Chenin Blanc. “Noëls de Montbenault” is a 2 hectare parcel within the appellation Coteaux du Layon Faye de Anjou, situated on the top of the hill with superb exposure. The soil is volcanic, composed of rhyolites and spilites. The vines are 50 years old. Undoubtedly, this is one of the great terroir of the Coteaux. The “Clos des Rouliers,” a .7 hectare parcel, makes up the balance of Leroy’s holdings and is also in the Coteaux de Anjou, located in first part of cote. The soil consists mostly of sandy shale. This vineyard has a southern exposure, and Leroy’s vines here are 15 years old. The vineyards are tilled; no weeding nor insecticides. The vine treatments are made up only of sulphur, pulp of Bordeaux and biodynamic preparations (certification ECOCERT). Bud-thinning, and green harvest follow inturn. The vineyard yield between 1996 to 2006 ranged between 7 and 30 hl/ha. The winemaking, most simply, consists of very slow pressing over a dozen hours. Bottling occurs one year after the vintage with no chaptalization.
