Tasted by MarkC. I can see where this wine is going, but the oak doesn't seem integrated right now. Plenty of Syrah character, but also shows a weedy, vegetal element that was off-putting to all of us tonight. I'd say give it at least a year, maybe two, and let the oak integrate. (PE: 87) - Tasted 11/15/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. Wow. Not sure there's much more to say. Had against an '01 Rieussec, and the SQN was by far the winner. In 20 years it may be a different story, but today the Noble Man was hands down the best wine. Mango, apricot, honey, all delectable, plenty of acid and loads of yum. (PE: 98) (98 pts.) - Tasted 11/15/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. Still needs some air. At first, popped and poured, this was outstanding (95 points) but with air it really came on. Lemon oil and hazelnut predominate on the nose. The finish is simply rich, viscous, white and yellow citrus fruits with nutty elements and a bit of the tropics thrown in for good measure. I notice a bit of nutmeg or allspice as well. Continues to be one of my all-time favorite white wines. (PE: 97) (97 pts.) - Tasted 11/7/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. Wow. Even with "travel shock" potentially in the mix, this was pretty awesome. A nice return to 2004 levels of enjoyment. Huge amounts of clove and hard spice on the nose, along with dark fruits. The palate showed berry compote, strawberry, a nice backbone, and a long finish. Excellent! (PE: 97) (95 pts.) - Tasted 11/7/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. Solid Zinfandel, especially for the vintage. Was not unlike some of the Turleys I've had from '05, with perhaps a bit more fruit and a bit more complexity. This was a little more tart than I'd've preferred, however, and seemed to miss something on the finish. (PE: 88) (88 pts.) - Tasted 11/6/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. Once again I opened a Sauternes waaaaay too early. I think these are "fine" when they're young, but to me the epitome of Sauternes is when they are 15+ years old, and they take on some additional weight and lose a bit of the acid/backbone. This was nice, and I can see where it's going, but it just didn't wow me. (PE: 88) (93 pts.) - Tasted 11/3/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. I struggle a bit with this wine. It is definitely Pinot Noir, but at the same time this bottle seemed so far from center that it almost pushes me into the camp which says this could be Syrah. Heady aromas, massive palate, lush fruit--all the hallmarks of an impressive wine, but lacking the elegance that, honestly, I think these wines can have. (PE: 90) - Tasted 11/3/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. This has been the most Old World of the last several vintages (at least to my palate) and it continues in the vein, but it seems like it's going through a bit of a transformation as well. The nose showed great--very SQN-like. The palate is heavy with black pepper, but also shows dark red and black fruits, hints of fruit compote, beef blood, graphite, and leather. I think another year or two and it will start to really open up.
Tasted by MarkC. Still short of its peak. After an hour, (and at a cooler temperature) I would have rated this 2-3 points less. However, at room temperature, and with 2+ hours of air, this is singing. Viscous, minerally, with hints of tart apple, loads of lemon oil, bits of tropical fruit, and plenty of acidity. What a spectacular wine. (96 pts.) - Tasted 11/2/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. Definitely not a wine for somebody who wants elegance, subtlety, or even what would typically be varietal correctness. This is a huge, massive wine. The nose leaps out of the glass, with dusty mocha and fruit notes. The palate is filled with tons of plummy fruit, chocolate, cinnamon and a hint of chocolate. The alcohol (16.9%) shows a little, but is surprisingly balanced by the fruit. Too bad there isn't a bit more tannin to back up the rest of the wine, or else this would really be an extraordinary wine. My guess is that it will fall to pieces in a few years as the alcohol takes front and center, but it's kind of enjoyable right now. (PE: 92) (90 pts.) - Tasted 10/25/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. Still hugely tannic, with only a bit of fruit showing. Shows a lot of potential, but I'm not sure it will ever get there because of the structure. Also showed noticeable dusty notes (Rutherford dust?) that took away from the overall enjoyment. I really did want to like this. Will be interesting to have the last bottle in maybe 5+ years and see if it every comes together.
Tasted by MarkC. Popped, decanted, and poured. Waaaaay too young, but shows hints of greatness. Tightly wound structure, with a blast of dark cherry and blackberry fruits. Inky, with some hints of coffee. I think this will be stunning in about 6 years. Need to keep hands off for at least 2-3 more years.
Tasted by MarkC. From the bottle, this was a bit disjointed. Showed good fruit (orange, tropical fruits), some sweet oak/butterscotch, good backbone. But they come across as separate components, and it was a bit offputting. With dinner (scallops and a parsnip crème), it really came alive as the components knit together. It became a wonderful combination of the components, in a seamless package, with supple mouthfeel, sweet fruit, and good structure. (At room temperature and with 4 hours of air, the wine by itself finally showed like it did with food.)
Tasted by MarkC. My only crime opening this bottle was not giving it enough air. I thought about having Carolynn decant it during the day, but then before I knew it we were home and scrambling to put on some food for our friends. It was interesting, sharing this with friends who enjoy wine, but are not wine geeks. I didn't say anything about it until we were halfway through the bottle, then I mentioned that this was a Parker 100-pointer. My buddy said "really?" I think it was one of those moments when a person can't reconcile their own experience with that of a professional. Not that he didn't enjoy it, but I believe he was expecting it to do something transcendental. Interesting perspective on points. As for the wine itself, I had another bottle of this about 18 months ago (also popped and poured), and it hasn't budged much. Intense nose, meat intermingling with perfume and black, black fruits. The palate got better over the course of a couple hours with air--it was just too tight at first, although still delicious. Tannins are quite noticeable, but there's plenty of fruit and other stuff going on to help you forget about them. The finish lasts and lasts--more of the fruit, the meat, some licorice. The problem I have with this wine at this point is that it's good, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I think it will be so much better when it hits its peak. (PE: 97) - Tasted 10/9/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. Popped and poured, this was best right out of the bottle, then started to show some prune-y notes that I wasn't crazy about. Not too bad for a 7-year old Zinfandel, and I'd like to think that maybe the fruit will soften and round out a bit with some more time, perhaps another 2-3 years. Alas, I won't know because this was my last bottle.
Tasted by MarkC. Very solid wine, even to my non-Francophile palate. Showing well at 10-years old, this had plenty of dark fruits, with a streak of leather and teriyaki through the middle of it. Had some earthy undertones that detracted a little for me, but I don't think these are flaws, just my preferences. Maybe I can get my head around BDX after all!
Tasted by MarkC. Deep black fruits, dusty coffee, and kirsch on the nose. The mouthfeel is less intense than I remember it from 10 months ago. Tannins are more noticeable, fruit seems to be down a notch on the mid-palate. Finish is long and intense, with tasty cranberry notes punctuating the riper, darker fruit flavors. Maybe in a bit of an "in between" phase?
Tasted by MarkC. Shortly after I got into wine, I remember seeing this wine on the shelf shortly after it had been awarded a "95-100" score in barrel. It was a splurge purchase for me, and I was completely disappointed when it ended up with an 88. Furthermore, not knowing that I needed to actually try wines myself, I believed I needed to hold onto this for years and years. That said, it was a decent bottle of wine, showing some grace and elegance, although I don't imagine this will get any better. Tobacco and dry currant surrounded by soft tannins, there's a bit of a hole in the mid-palate which kept this from getting into the 90s. Very drinkable, but not exciting.
Tasted by MarkC. Nice stuff. Definitely better at the warmer end of the spectrum--there's almost too much bite when it's around 50º. However, at 65 degrees it shows nice, soft, citrusy fruit with some toasty notes, grass, good balance. This is an example of why I love Aubert Chardonnays.
Tasted by MarkC. Wow--this was a completely different wine than the one I had 9 months ago. I could tell from the first sniff that this was a whopper--loads of concentrated fruit and spice on the nose, with a palate to match. Dark blue and red fruits, with beef blood and roasting spices. Quite tannic, but the fruit was big enough that it helped me forget about them. While the previous bottle seemed a bit like a wallflower, this was approaching the "in your face" level.
Tasted by MarkC. Had very low expectations given some of the stuff I've read. This ended up being a very pleasant surprise. Actually got better with an hour of air. Initially it showed mostly leather, tea, some tobacco. The tannins are still noticeable, but they are not harsh. With time, however, some spicy plum and cranberry came through, providing nice balance.
Tasted by MarkC. Very enjoyable. One of those New World wines with Old World structure and breeding. Fruit is great--I get pomegranate, raspberry--and it is ripe, but not goopy or overdone. I found a nice streak of dusty coffee, too.
Tasted by MarkC. 18 months since my last bottle of this, the fruit is either fading or it was hiding in this particular bottle. Still a very good bottle of wine, it went well with mozzarella-stuffed chicken. It seemed to be missing the unctuousness and the lemon/apple of previous bottles. Plenty of oomph, with carmel-ly undertones, a bit of melon, some roasted nuts. If this is an indication of how these are aging, for me it's time to drink up as I love the fruit-forward exuberance in their youth.
Tasted by MarkC. Really nice Cabernet. Kind of reminded me of a TRB-style wine (wonder if that was something that rubbed off on Jeff?). Nice New World fruit, but also classic Cabernet structure and flavors. Enjoyed over the course of two evenings, this is a wine that has a lot of tannins at this stage, and needs at least an hour, preferably several, before it starts to show its stuff. I can see the WS score in the future, although it's quite nice right now.
Tasted by MarkC. I thought this was awesome. Having just arrived into London from LAX and being exhausted and simply wanting a glass of wine may have impacted that somewhat, but it was still quite tasty. Deep, brooding fruit, with scents of bacon and grilled meats. Tannins were not overwhelming, and there was pretty good acid to balance the fruit. Very nice job...
Tasted by MarkC. Wow--this wine has gotten better and better with each bottle. I think the SQN whites tend to need some time (at least a year or two) before they start to show their best. This showed some rich white and yellow fruit, a bit of lanolin, some nice Christmas spices, and plenty of mouth-coating deliciousness to make it easy to finish the bottle (amongst two people). I just had another bottle a month ago and this was just as good--what a great place for this wine right now.
Tasted by MarkC. Very tasty wine from Mike Officer. I'm always a bit leery of Mourvedre-based wines, because, to me, they tend to be a little on the dry side, with the deep, dark fruit hiding behind a wall of drying tannins. This was was tannic, no doubt, but it seemed to break through the barrier to some extent, and showed plenty of dark blue and black fruit flavors. This would probably be better with a couple more years of age on it, but, sadly, this was my only bottle.
Tasted by MarkC. This tasted well-made, and there were not any flaws, but it just didn't do it for me. It did get better with some air (there was a hint of bitterness that disappeared after 45 minutes). Definitely Pinot Noir--quite frankly, this tasted pretty restrained and bordered on elegant.
Tasted by MarkC. After 20 minutes or so, the nose has become expansive, rich, and very SQN-like. I will confess that the palate, so far, is pretty tight, and that this could almost pass for Syrah. Unlike the '05 vintage, I think I'd give the nod to the '06 Syrahs at this point, but this is still phenomenal in its vigor and exuberance. The tannins are pretty noticeable, but the fruit is packed and stacked and incredibly vibrant. - Tasted 8/29/2009. $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $

Tasted by MarkC. Solid Bordeaux blend, with plenty of deep red fruit and prominent tannins. There is a bit of overripeness to this that mars what would otherwise be an outstanding wine, although, for me personally, I quite enjoyed it with a big steak. Intense, rich, viscous, and more integrated and balanced than previous bottles. Clearly a wine that needs some age and, based on how it went, some air.
