Weekend: Muscadet
Dear Friends,
As I ride into town on a cycle of a more modern leaning, the sound of whirling windmills fills
the City of Light. The electricity is generated by the legs of man and there’s no place I’d
rather be on this Sunday afternoon. The sound of revelry bounces off the cobbles and the
soul of this wondrous stone and mortar man-made triumph dashes under the Arc of the
same name – the Tour de France has come to Paris and in its wake a most beautiful din is
rising.
Like the Blue Angels or any other American summertime passion, the eruption of the the
Tour de France ringing into a Parisian summer sky is the sound of the season for many – like
a 1000 layer croissant, folder over and over again, this cycling tradition for France is so
steeped in cultural pride, it absorbs any misgiving or current scandal vying for front page
news.
The beverage of choice on a crystal-clear 75-80 degree day?
Muscadet...and lots of it...chilled to the bone.
Which brings me to an old-time producer and friend of Garagiste – Chateau de la
Bourdiniere.
How something of this ilk can trade for $9.83 is beyond me but it is not my place to question
the hierarchy of vinous price-points and their relative merit.
Yes, that was a joke.
For me, Muscadet remains the world’s finest white wine value (with few competitors) and it
should be horded and praised for what it is – a drink of great potential complexity that is also
just what a lazy and sultry summer’s eve was hoping for. It cuts through oysters, crab, a
host of seafood dishes and almost any picnic worthy “fare-of-frivolity” you can drum up...all
for less than $10.
As far as the Bourdiniere is concerned, the Lieubeau family (Bordiniere) are such a down to
earth and close-knit group that it’s no surprise their Tradition bottling has roots of nononsense
character meshed with very high quality. Full of tensile, stony, lime and ginger
infused nervous fruit, 2010 (in general) is looking better and better as the months tick away.
A sanded quality is slowly grinding the jagged edges (a process that will continue for the
next 3-5 years) and this sumptuous, mineral-filled wine will be a favorite of those that enjoy
their alcohol low but their terroir high.
Somewhat overlooked/undervalued after the gorge of 2005-2009 that US consumers feasted
on during the Muscadet run-up of the last decade (thanks in large part to the work of Joe,
RIP), the 2010 vintage is another very strong campaign that acts as a foil to the broader and
slightly more alcoholic 2009’s. Think of 2010 as a downsized 1996 and you will be close.
If you are seeking a big, in your face style, that’s not what you are going to get here – this
wine is classic Muscadet – it teems with anticipation and signals the most innocent moment
of a new day when chance is not what may be but what you make of it.
This parcel is directly form the winery cellar with the finest provenance available.
ONE SHIPMENT ONLY of the 2010 (in keeping with the vintage, it is far superior to the 2011,
one of the reasons I indulged in the last of the 2010).
