The Perrins, the folks that own Beaucastel, produce a number of levels of wine. Generally we aren’t huge fans of their various value levels vis-a-vis what else there is in the marketplace. But it seems the 2007 vintage put each category up a notch or two from their previous levels qualitatively. This was impressive at first taste, with big fruit and substance beyond its humble status. It was already stacked on the floor when the 90 from Spectator came out. Darker fruit component than most Cotes du Rhone, probably due to the higher percentage of Syrah (50%, the rest Grenache), this one is a bit of a cooler customer with a fresh, lively palate and plenty of punch to the burly black and red fruit. Great value.
