A lot of wine types over the years have launched what we affectionately call ‘spousal brands’ with varied results. This is Jennifer Lea Tensley (wife of Joey Tensley, well known Syrah guy) and this is apparently her own gig, though she does have access to a handy consultant. The Lea Santa Rita is a blend of Pinot Noir from the Turner, Buona Terra, and Moormann vineyards, all of which have vineyard designated bottlings under the Lea banner as well. All of these vineyards sit in the Santa Rita Hills appellation and show the highly aromatic, high toned fruit of the area. One the palate, there is the same purity and clarity of fruit promised in the nose, but there is a roundness and suppleness to the fruit that is a pleasant surprise though we aren’t sure if it comes from the Syrah experience in terms of profile or if it was another little gift of 2012. Either way you win with this excellent, well-priced, ample and classy up-front Pinot carrying a Wine Advocate 92. Stock Report Dec. 2013
