Erste Lage rated. This very steep vineyard, composed mostly of brown-blue or light-red mixed slate, is the steepest on the Saar and one of the steepest in Germany, having a 68 percent slope. It's also one of the few vineyards in the Saar that is actually right on the river, most others being south-facing over side-valleys. This part of the river takes a loop to the east, so there are several south-facing plots along it here, running from the Kanzemer Altenberg through the Wiltinger Hölle, the Gottesfuß, and the Braune Kupp, farmed by Egon Mueller.

One plot, lower and close to the river, now owned by Wgt. van Volxem, is still planted in pre-phylloxera 125-year-old vines, ungrafted direct producers, from a clone known locally as the Gelber Riesling. The vines are small and gnarly and set a tiny amount of fruit. An Alte Reben cuvée is made from this plot that is something unlike anything else grown on the river. In its own way it's as special as the Vielles Vignes Françaises or Noval Nacional are, but has the advantage that it hasn't yet been 'discovered', and so is much more affordable than these other ungrafted-vine wines. jht
