2001 Rob Roy Red
The 2001 Rob Roy Red is the third vintage release of our Bordeaux Blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. This year's blend is nearly identical to the 1999 vintage and consists of 49% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot. This is another "big red" from the 2001 vintage and is sure to cellar very well (but try it now-- it's absolutely deli- cious). This wine has a deep, concentrated black cherry color-- what a gorgeous Bordeaux! Aromas jump out of the glass-- raspberry, cherry, a little blackberry and strawberry-- intense fruit character. Spice (put your nose about 2 inches above the glass, swirl and smell-- clove, cinnamon, anise) and oak round it out. The palate is treated to a tannic, full, rich and young wine. Oak, cherries, and blackberry flavors are all present and lead to a tannic, palate-coating finish suggestive of earthy flavors-- tobacco, spice, and leather. It's hard to resist this wine right now, but cellar time will serve this one well, conservatively speaking, for at least another 3-5 years. The Merlot was harvested on September 28, 2001 and averaged 1.6 tons per acre. At harvest these grapes had 22.6 brix, 0.77 TA and a 3.39 pH. Next, the Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on October 19, 2001 with an average of 2.25 tons per acre. At this time, the grapes were 23.8 brix, TA of 0.86 and pH of 3.34. Finally, the Cabernet Franc was har- vested on October 25, 2001 and averaged 1.9 tons per acre. At harvest the grapes were 22.4 brix, TA 0.94 and pH 3.20. Each variety was fermented and oak aged separately for 19 months in 90% American Oak and 10% French Oak. Many tasting trials (yeah, it's a tough job but someone's got to do it...pity our poor souls for having to endure this process!) resulted in the final blend which was then cold stabilized, filtered and bottled on August 28, 2003. The finished wine has 0.25% residual sugar, 0.65 TA, 3.39 pH and 12.5% alcohol. A total of 204 cases were produced.
