It is a challenge to describe this wine in a way that does the quality justice. Almost everybody who had the opportunity to try the wine out of barrel responded first with a raise of the eyebrows followed by a “Wow!” But I cannot exactly just write “wow,” can I? However, there is a simple sentiment in “Wow!” that does express the 2006 Richards Family Vineyard very well. The wine is compelling, intriguing, distinct, incredibly enjoyable, very pleasing, even if difficult to deconstruct into all its characters and nuances. The wine is complete in its offering, dark bramble fruits, savory spice and meat, rich and full in the mid-palate and mouthwatering and fresh on the finish. If I were to attempt more specific descriptors crispy bacon, oregano, lavender, and cassis would fit. The mouth feel has a firm foundation that carries the wine along into a very long and pleasing finish, but there is also an incredible softness that creates a round, full perception. The bottom line is when you have a sip, you want more, and…well…WOW!
