* VARIETALS: 60% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, 20% Syrah
* VINEYARDS: Place of production: Most of the grapes for Il Ducale are sourced from Ruffino's estates in Tuscany. The other part comes from vineyards located in the most prestigious vine growing areas of Tuscany. Soils: The soil is characteristic for most of central Tuscany with an abundant presence of "Galestro" rock and a moderate amount of clay. Microclimate: Variable from one area to another which confers richness and complexity to the wine. Altitude: Variable from 220 to 450 meters above sea level. Growing system: Cordon trained. Vine density: 3000-5000 vines per hectare
* VINIFICATION AND AGEING: In the vintage 2007, picking for Il Ducale started in mid September for the Merlot and continued until the beginning of October with the Sangiovese and the Syrah. The fermentation took place in stainless-steel vats at a controlled temperature of 26/28°C for approximately 8 days. The maceration on the skins continued for another 8-10 days. After completing the malo-lactic fermentation, Il Ducale is aged for about 12 months in tonneaux of first, second and third use. Alcohol content: 13.5% vol.
* SENSORY PROPERTIES: Colour: Ruby red with violet reflections. Aroma: The bouquet is complex and intense, with outstanding notes of cassis, cherries jam, plums and chocolate. Then it denotes very clean flavours of tobacco, vanilla, eucalyptus and spice. These pleasant spicy notes added by Syrah perfectly matches with the sensations of red and black fruit and aromatic herbs, given by Sangiovese and even with the roundness and pleasantness typical of Merlot. Tasting profile: Well bodied, with an initial predominance of fruity notes, that slowly matches with round and elegant tannins. The final is pleasantly almost sweet, but the very long aftertaste brings notes of ripe fruits together with aromas of vanilla and balsamic herbs. A modern Tuscan wine born from Ruffino's century old winemaking tradition.
* First Vintage: 2003
