2006 The ‘1885’ Shiraz
A rare Shiraz from the Schrapel family’s Barossa fabled vineyard.
The Barossa Gardens Series Collection honours the greatness or our growers' individual vineyards that have defined
quality at Peter Lehmann Wines since our foundation in 1979.
The Barossa is a viticulturally diverse and complex region and Shiraz is a grape which shows distinctively different
characters depending upon the sub-region in which it flourishes. In partnership with its growers, Peter Lehmann Wines
has unparalleled access to superb Shiraz vineyards throughout the Barossa; vineyards that give Shiraz expressing the
terroir of its region.
Ebenezer, in the north west of the Barossa is home to Ralph and Angela Schrapel who are the 6th generation guardians
of a very special patch of old vine dry grown Shiraz planted by their forebears in 1885. These low yielding vines, with
their roots deep in the Ebenezer soils, are a viticultural treasure unique to the Barossa and the oldest vineyard available to
Peter Lehmann Wines. This is a rare Shiraz from the Schrapel family’s Barossa 1885 vineyard.
Black cherry on the rim with a dark centre, it has fragrant aromas of rich plum, cinnamon and
hints of mint. A beautifully soft wine with layers of flavour: plums, dark berry fruits, hints of
liquorice and nutmeg complemented by the fine ripe tannins. A richly flavoured, supple, yet
remarkably restrained wine: a classic Ebenezer Shiraz.
2006 was an outstanding red wine vintage in the Barossa producing wines of exceptional colour,
flavour and structure.
This highly prized vineyard on its own roots was planted by the Schrapel family in 1885. The
current family custodian Ralph Schrapel, is 6th generation Barossan and a Baron of Barossa.
The wine was fermented on skins for 10 days to maximise colour and flavour and then aged for
12 months in French oak hogsheads.
A delicious accompaniment for rare beef, game dishes of wild duck, hare and venison, hearty casseroles
and a good aged cheddar.
