  • 1970 Bodegas Protos Ribera del Duero Gran Reserva

I had a bottle of this previously and it wasn't in good condition.
    This bottle showed much better.
I served it alongside two Riojas from the same vintage.
The Ribera stood out a little but was more impressive than previously.
It started out with a nice nose and fruit on entry but with a slightly sour finish.
After an hour or so the finish fleshed out and the wine was more rounded and enjoyable.
With more time there was another change as the wine seemed to darken in colour and took on a lactic quality.
The palate also became more muddled as the wine lost definition.
Still a very interesting experience and a pleasure to see a Ribera from a co-operative hold up so well.
Incidentially the Joven from this winery was a regular quaffing wine for me when I first visited Spain 89/90. It cost around £1.

  • 2005 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva

This bottle was very primary initially but the remaining half consumed the folloeing day was much improved. Two hours in the decanter made quite a difference. A much more traditionally styled Rioja emerged.
This vintage has additional garnacha in the blend but the usual high standard in the bottle. No rush to drink, obviously but a decant certainly recommended.

  • 1997 Chateau Musar

Showing all the flaws of Musar, volatile and with the sickly sweet trace of brett. Far from the best example of Musar. Pity, this winery can produce sublime wines but this isn't one of them.
