Opened and decanted last night hoping to enjoy it with an amazing grade 5 Japanese wagyu sirloin steak. What a disappointment, totally acidic and not much else. Out of curiosity I decided to pour it back into the bottle and give it 24 hours time. Well, lo and behold, tonight another bottle emerged. Quite full bodied, it had shed almost all the acidic part and in its place a good taste of red fruit emerged. Really enjoyed it with some Stilton cheese. What a great surprise!
Once again a disappointing Brunelli from a supposedly top producer. The main word that comes to mind is acidic, followed by light bodied. It wasn’t plonk but I can think of hundreds of far better bottles for a third of the price. Unfortunately capacity to age is not something that Brunellos are capable of imho. They are for the most part totally overrated and can’t hold a candle to 4th or even 5th Bordeaux growths.

This is a truly splendid example of a perfectly made 2003 Bordeaux. The color is still very deep with no hints of ageing. On the nose an explosion of red and black fruit. Very chewy on the palate, lots of substance, quite tannic, needs a good 45 min in the decanter. Great length, a fantastic wine at a truly remarkable price. So glad I bought 60 bottles en primeur a! Don’t hesitate buying at least a case if you can find it.

12/22/2013 5:41:00 PM - Hi Andy, I'm pleased that you enjoyed some of the places. I'd forgotten to suggest The Chairman so I'm pleased that you found it. The owner is a friend of mine and it's very special. Another place (newly opened) that is seriously good is Seventh Son in Wan Chai. It is run by the former chef of Fuk Lam Moon, the famous tycoon hang-out (which itself is also a very good restaurant). Merry Christmas! Mike
11/18/2013 8:58:00 PM - Hi Andy,
Try these:
Luk Yu Tea House, 24-28 Stanley Street, Central +852 2523 5464
Old-fashioned charm and the best Lap Cheung (liver sausage) and Char Siu (sliced BBQ pork) in Hong Kong. No bookings.
Tim Ho Wan, 2-20 Kwong Wa Street, Mongkok, Kowloon +852 2332 2896
Worth a trip to Kowloon-side for the cheapest 1 Michelin Star food on the planet…. Outrageously good Dim Sums. No bookings.
Tasty Congee & Noodle Wonton Shop, G/F, 21 King Kwong Street, Happy Valley 2838 3922
The best conjee (rice porridge) on the planet. This is the original shop and is still the best. Michelin-recommended. Go early because no bookings. Outrageously cheap… but popular with tycoons and movie stars.
Lung King Hee, Four Seasons Hotel, 8 Finance Street, Central www.FourSeasons.com
Possibly the best up-market Chinese food in Hong Kong and 3 Michelin stars but personally, I prefer:
One Harbour Road, Grand Hyatt Hotel, 1 Harbour Road, Wan Chai +852 2588 1234
Very cool setting and up-market restaurant serving the best (for my taste) authentic Cantonese cuisine in Hong Kong.
It is also Shanghai Hairy Crab season at the moment and the best place for that is probably
Lao Shang Hai, Basement, Novotel Century Hong Kong Hotel, Wan Chai +852 2827-9339
Let me know if you need more Kowloon-side.
Cheers, Mike
