Drunk the day after a 2003 Chateau Gloria (St Julien). As might be expected, a very different wine. Still austere on the nose, hinting at another classic claret, but decidedly more fruit forward than the Gloria. In fact, whereas the Gloria exhibited a balance of acidity and tannins - carrying its austerity through to the palate - the Meyeny shows more balance between fruit and acidity, with tannins not much in evidence. Both the Meyney and the Gloria scored surprisingly highly in a Farr Vintners tasting in October 2010 (see: http://www.farrvintners.com/blog.php?blog=69) and the market for both noticeably ticked up around this time. Still, $30 a bottle from Epic Cellars is a bargain for the Meyney.

Of the two my preference is for the Gloria, but I can see that other palates will prefer the virtues in the Meyney - and it might have a bit more time to run than its St Julien counterpart. Both are great with food and excellent value.

Weak but satisfying bouquet that hints at complexity. On the palate, tannins and acidity are well-balanced, with fruit less prominent. That said, this is a Bordeaux in the classic mould: austere and slightly earthy. A pleasing, long-ish finish. A great drinking wine, with food or without. Although not perfectly balanced it stuck me as excellent value.

An interesting wine. This was the second bottle that I've had from the case and it was an improvement on the disappointing first. It still has enough acidity and fruit about it to stand up to meats of the more delicately flavoured variety (in this case a lamb casserole). The nose was fine, if not particularly enticing with. The palate was pleasingly smooth (but with tannins only faintly in evidence) but sadly faded quickly leaving a rather thin impression. Still, it paired well with this particular meal and I'm looking forward to trying another.
