  • 2009 Roccapesta Morellino di Scansano Ribeo

Very evolved already despite its age with brick like rim and lots of sediment. On the nose, some sweet red fruit, earthy beet-like notes, oak, alcoholic. Fruit drying out, leaving somewhat bitter finish in the mouth.

  • 2012 Calatroni Oltrepò Pavese

Deep ruby core going almost all the way to the rim. On the nose, sweet, almost Grenache like red fruit notes, hint of raisin, even meaty note. On the palate, juicy, ripe menage of red and dark fruit, soft, velvety tannin, medium (plus) body. Medium plus length with baking spice notes. Well-balanced. Very good P/Q ratio. (Note: the grape Bonarda is also known as Croatina, sometimes used as a blending grape in Valpolicella/Amarone. Bonarda from Argentina is technically Douce Noir.)

  • 2012 Château Moncontour Vouvray Pétillant Cuvée Prédilection Brut

Have to admit I was skeptical when it comes to sparkling Vouvray. Even the ones from famous Vouvray/Loire producers disappointed me often: tart, lean, alcoholic and a lot of time, oxidative (bruised apple notes). Makes me wonder if they used the grapes that didn't make the cut for their dry or sweet Vouvray. So I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Appearance: pale lemon, very fine bubbles, if a bit too vigorous. On the nose, fruity, notes of white flower, hint of yeast. On the palate, soft, creamy, medium plus acidity. Medium plus length with mineral note at the end. Soft and delicate. Lovely as it is, probably won't age too well as it doesn't have the structure of a good Champagne. But for the price, a no-brainer.
