  • 1996 Domaine Bernard Morey et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse

From 3.0 liter bottle, purchased in October 2019 from Zachy's "White Tie Auction". Consumed with about 100 of my closest friends at the Zachy's Peter Hut auction held at Manhatta downtown.

The Vide Bourse (aka "baby-Bâtard" given its close proximity to Bâtard-Montrachet) from Bernard Morey comes from the oldest vines at the Domaine (approximately 80 years old). While the provenance is unknown, the bottle was in excellent condition with a perfect fill.

Beautiful light yellow-gold color with no visible signs of premox. Suprisingly closed on the nose at first and would have benefitted from a decanting as it took an hour for the wine to show its stuff. Captivating nose of citrus fruit with just of hint of herbs. Perfectly balanced with that '96 vintage acidity keeping everything laser-focused. Not quite at the level of my previous bottles of Morey '96 Bâtard, but still a terrific showing that paired beautifully with the poached halibut, Champagne beurre blanc with root vegetables, artichoke and sorrel.

  • 2018 Peter Michael Sauvignon Blanc L'Apres-Midi

En magnum, purchased on release direct from Peter Michael Winery. Light yellow color. Lovely nose of tropical aromas - pineapple, apricot and lemon with just a hint of mint. Very rich and good acidity counters the 14.9% ABV. Definitely New World sauvignon blanc / semillon in style, but tasty nonetheless. Drinking well today, but will hold for another 3-5 years.

  • 2017 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé

Bottle 10 of 12 purchased on release. Light pink and orange color. Gorgeous perfumed nose of melon, minerals and spice. Rich flavors of strawberry and citrus that really stain the palate. Perfectly balanced and drinking beautifully today. Domaine Tempier is one of my favorites from Provence and the six years of bottle of age proves the point that top tier rosé from Bandol benefit from bottle aging. Super tasty tonight with the flatbread pizza.

2/18/2022 5:19:00 AM - FreddieMoose: I bought 3 bottles from Benchmark Wine in Napa several years ago and have a temp-controlled wine room in my home so my storage has been impeccable. I was too upset to try the 3rd bottle the other night, but plan on doing so soon. A local Burgundy wine collector that I know has advised to consume Leflaive '05s (and even'10s) soon, so you may want to plan on drinking yours in the near future. Burgundy is my favorite region so I know you can appreciate my disappointment. Let me know how your wines are when you drink. Cheers!
