1970 Château Palmer

Perfect bottle with a high fill into the neck. This pours medium ruby in the glass with faint bricking. The nose is just soaring with classic Margaux perfume showing violets, plum, barnyard, charcoal, tobacco, and wet soil. The palate is youthful and silky showing loads of plum and violets with silky medium tannin and medium acid. The finish is long and layered replaying the classic violets and plums. All in all this was an incredible and regal showing from the 1970 Palmer. About as I good as I could imagine it showing. Just a hair behind the incredible 1983 and 1989 I've had. What's particularly amazing here is the amount of life this 54 year old wine is showing. Should easily make it another 54 years and beyond.

Nice high fill and great color. This pours light ruby in the glass with medium bricking. The nose is just lovely, opening over the course of an hour to show dried cherry, wet hay, nori, animal fur, grilled meat, cigar ash, fresh mushroom, a whisp of caramel, pomegranite and a kiss of toasted hazelnut. The palate enters on juicy cherry with medium minus tannin and medium acid. The finish is long showing nori, grilled meat, hazelnut, and cherry. All in all this blew past my expectations and was just a stunning showing. Still remarkably youthful from this pristine bottle, displaying the penchant of 1993s to show open and complex but young. I tasted others around the table on this blind and guesses were 2005, 2007, and 2010. A testiment to how well this held up.

1954 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Ygay Reserva

This pours a cloudy medium garnet. The nose is fully tertiary and very mature. Aromas are of leather, dried cherries, fruit leather, chopped walnuts, dried grapefruit, ramen broth, mulch, and balsamic. The palate enters on fruit leather with medium minus tannin and medium plus acid. There is a muddyness to the mid-palate that I just couldn't get past here, which held this back for me. For what its worth, other tasters at this table appreciated this far more than me.
