  • NV Kitanohomare Daiginjo

Kitanohomare Daiginjo Keihukuho - Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan (Shiribeshi Subprefecture)
    1) Bottled: 1/21/2015; Purchased at Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) Duty Free ~$72 US
    2) Polish: 35%
    3) ABV: 15.8%
    4) Color: very pale straw yellow
    5) Nose: floral, apple/pear, mild/moderate earthy funk (good kind)
    6) Mouthfeel: moderate body, coats nicely - a bit oily
    7) Palate: initially sweet, but not cloying. Asian pear/Fuji apple, slight bitter citrus (pomelo) that gives way to earthy/oaky taste on sides/back of tongue (much like some white Bordeaux). Also has nice minerality, brininess (reminiscent of Spanish Albariño) - with closed eyes, evokes cold sea. Alcohol not overpowering for 15.8% - very well-balanced sake.
    8) Finish: long, pleasing - all flavors linger nicely for many minutes in harmony.
    9) Food Pairing: would go well with uni, raw oysters, raw scallop, ama ebi, hamachi, amberjack. Seems like strong/oily fish (salmon, mackerel) could overpower. Tasted on its own - nice to sip in quiet contemplation.

Very unusual sake, very enjoyable. Seems like very old-style brewing. Could not find any English language reviews nor any place to purchase/order in US (too bad). If you come across it, definitely worth trying for the experience - good excuse for trip back to Japan (along with Onsen in winter!)

  • 2001 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino

Blood red on pouring. Scarlet, rust at edges after 4 hour decant. Subdued dark fruit, good minerality. Very balanced. Stunning with braised Iberico de bellota cheeks. At peak.

  • 2008 Bodega Catena Zapata Nicolás Catena Zapata

Nicely complimented grilled Japanese beef. Not very complex, a bit disappointing for price.
