  • 2015 Château Monbousquet

Waves of cassis, raspberry and black currants that overlay a lot of creamy oak. This is certainly a power wine and must be appreciated on it's own terms. Extracted and dense it's something that needs time but few lovers of the style will be able to keep from drinking this deliciousness now. I can't blame them. This is hedonistic and pleasurable and we all need things like this in our life. 93+

I confess that I don't know the proper window to drink this but it certainly isn't now. This is a delight but I've had it open for two hours and I can't get it to come around to the promise I know is there. It's beautifully delineated boysenberry, blackberry and sweet vanilla is marked with an acidity that still just cuts all that richness. I'm able to pick out that Barossa Shiraz almost too well from the Cab but I feel that will settle in time. There's a little blue here and I hope it will become more prominent in the next few years. Overall a joy and it's got the structure to last another decade at least. What an olfactory expression of Barossa!

I think this is pretty damn good. It's aging but seemingly gracefully. Oxidation hits it hard with a little time out of the bottle but it just gives it a hand along. It's pale gold in color for sure with a tinge of lemon. You get the 25 percent new oak on the nose but not offensively. Smells definitively like a quality Chardonnay that's developing with age. Relatively one dimensional but I think it's almost better that way. Apple, citrus and pear combine with a creamy round note and a linear acidity to produce an inexpensive example of why Oak Knoll is such a cool appellation for (relatively) value Chardonnay. I like it!
