Drank a bottle of this with my wife a few nights ago. Didn't want to go with a BIG bordeaux so we picked this second wine from Cos D'estournel. I was happy with the nose right upon uncorking the bottle. My wife was in love with it at first sip and so we drank the bottle over the next 2 days. Very nice, earthy bordeaux tones. Very drinkable right now which is the way a second wine should be. A little pencil lead on the open, with leather, cedar and dark fruit in the middle. Acid, tannins and fruit all in balance right now. I highly recommend this wine especially at the price point.

Cork was nice and firm with no tainting. I poured it directly into the glass without any decanting. I have learned that the older the wine the less you want to decant it unless you want to kill it it immediately. First on the nose forest floor, pine and cedar notes hit you instantly. On the tasting a hint of dark cherry and light black pepper. Tannins and acids were well balanced. Smooth medium finish. Very drinkable but I wouldn't wait too much longer as I think this is probably at its peak. After finishing a glass it becomes floral with dark dried fruit notes. Very nice but drink now.

Served this Christmas day with boneless prime rib, mashed potatoes, creamed carrots, green beans and gravy. I bought this in an online auction and got it for a very reasonable price but the cork was wet and slightly bulging. When I began to uncork it I knew it was a soggy cork and I slowly maneuvered to release the vintage from it's 33 year captivity. Of course, with a slightly bulging cork I gave it a quick smell and discovered all was in order and ready to taste. My experience with older Bordeaux' is that decanting is a BAD thing. The wine can fritter away to nothing in no time, so I poured it right into everyone's glass and began to consume. It started with earth and forest floor. Almost a hint of mushroom. Cedar box was very nice on the nose. Citrus in the sides of the mouth and a small amount of tannin at the front but not a ton of fruit. As it began to breathe, hints of cigar box and pipe tobacco came to life as well as bits of bacon and barbecue. After finishing the wine with the meal we went around the table to score the wine. The 4 scores averaged out to a 92. Not a big surprise now that I have read all the reviews on Cellar Tracker. There is enough acid and tannin for this wine to hold strong for at least 5 or 10 more years but if you are looking for a bunch of fruit you may be hard pressed to find it in this vintage. Well balanced and slightly heavier on acid and tannin than fruit but with a nice lingering finish. I will be looking to pick up some more of this vintage in the coming years.
