Decanted with aeration. Tasted right away, had wonderful red fruit and dark chocolate aromas and taste, but just a bit thin mid-palate. After an hour, absolutely wonderful. Rich and round and still very similar flavor profile. After 3 hours it was a little more austere--the fruit was less vibrant and lost some of its chocolate character, and the structure was much firmer. I'd say this is a drink pretty soon wine and enjoy the hedonism while you can. Happily we have more in the cellar and can test this theory over the next few years.
I liked this blend a lot. Up front it was big and jammy, with slightly sweet red fruit and spice dominating. After an hour plus in the decanter it was a little more austere, with savory leather notes and a tannin edge, but it was more complex as well. I'd say it drank a lot like a big Zin at first, Tempranillo later. I enjoyed both aspects, and it's always more interesting when the wine evolves with decanting.
I've had the '05 and '07 and think I like the '07 at least as much. It is much better after decanting for at least an hour, but then it's very tasty indeed. It keeps the rich red fruit and loses the jarring candy flavors that are present with PnP. With time there are some gamy notes that let you know it's syrah, but in the right balance with the fruit. It could be more complex, but it gives a lot of pleasure and is drinking well now when decanted.
