  • 2007 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau

Bouquet: Intensely aromatic--herbal, dried plums, anise, raisin, juniper-like note.
Palate: Smooth and will get smoother with age.
Flavor: Red and black licorice, prune, herb, finishes with a bitter note with firm, though fine tannins.
Comment: This has just entered its drinking window but has a long future. Drank this over a 3 day period, so that it really opened up and the aroma and prune character gained power. It also become more complex, though I find it hard to describe the nuances that came out by day 3. My Brother In-Law said it had some varnish on the nose, which isn't far off.

  • 1999 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Bouquet: Very funky, earth, herb, mineral, blackberry, dark plum/prune, smoky toasty oak showing coffee and dark chocolate. Day 2: Very complex, earthy and funky, spice and herb blend (anise, nutmeg, thyme), orange and lemon zest, violets.
    Palate:
Flavor: Citrus attack followed by plum, racy bing cherry with some pie cherry flavors. Finishes with plum, vanilla, milk chocolate. Day 2: Citrus, bright Bing Cherry, with small % of pie chart. Underneath all this this is a creamy chocolate, toasted oak and lively cassis.
Comment: One of the best Mondavi wines I've had (excepting Opus 1).

  • 2001 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve To-Kalon Vineyard

Bouquet: Violets, damp earth, roasted coffee bean and chocolate toasty oak, sweet cassis and dark cherry.
    Palate:
Flavor: Cassis, blackberry and dark cherry syrup (unsweetened) enveloped by chocolate oak and roast coffee. The flavors plus sweet spice come together on the finish.
Comment: Lively concentrated fruit without being overripe, smooth tannins, gorgeous bouquet and flavors. The wine has some natural sweetness that isn't excessive; the syrup character applies more to texture than to the concentrated fruit flavor and texture than to the sweetness.
