  • 1998 Penfolds Bin 389

Yes, any doubts about Penfolds 389 from a superb vintage aging gracefully should be dispelled. This not only delivered concentrated, bountiful and focused fruit on night one, but was even showier and generous on night 2--after Argon gas preservative. Having said this, I would be reticent to hold this much longer. It's a brooding delicious value--if you bought it way back when--but it's so glorious now, I would not chance this going on longer. At 22 years it belies its modesty; first rate but drink me!

  • 2000 Château Bourgneuf

This one is past its prime. It’s mellow but the fruit is barely there. The acids come out strongly without any requisite matching body. The wine is drinkable but really offers no pleasure anymore-it’s too late. If you have any give it a shot, but drink it right off; and certainly don’t keep it for a second night.

  • 2010 Cantina Sociale Cooperativa Copertino Riserva

This one got a 91 rating in the latest wine spectator. A 10-year-old wine at $15 a bottle seemed like an incredible bargain. Well, I found it for $10 a bottle!, and I bought all 11 bottles they had. Not a mistake. The wine has the smell of aging in older barrels and a little bit of brett is definitely there. Having said that, it’s balanced, smooth, characterful and above all—interesting. If you can find some I would definitely go out and get. This is the perfect pasta pizza wine where you can actually have something to discuss while enjoying. Different from Salice Salentino, but based on the same grape variety.

11/22/2018 9:28:00 AM - Thank you for the comment on the 1973 Barbera. I have never seen the Sherry. Enjoyed many of Angelo's wine in the 1980's. Hope you have a great bottle and Happy Holidays.

5/31/2018 8:44:00 PM - LightDancer-0-I got is inspired from your post that I opened a 1971 Riserva tonight. It was absolutely glorious in perfect, ethereal shape. (see my post) I too got in on the ground floor. We had a distributor in Durham, N.C. that was bringing in all the Fossis in the late 80's-early 90's. As you probably know, they were kept in cement vats for years before bottling. I have NEVER tasted any Chianti, and I've drunk dozens, that had this kind off staying power. Only a few left down in the cellar. Best wishes.

5/31/2018 6:53:00 PM - Hello Arturo. Thank you for your comment about our Fossi tasting 6 years ago. I'm surprised that you found the reference! My history with Fossi goes back to the late 1970s, when I became very familiar with Sydney Milstein (I believe) the owner of Mayflower Wines in Washington, D.C. I was told that Sydney's father, Aaron, was a member of the Chianti Classico panel that awarded the Black Rooster. Mayflower had a great selection of Chianti, and that is where I picked up the Fossi.
