  • NV El Maestro Sierra Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Oloroso 15 Años

    Tasted for WSET exam preparation
Appearance: deep amber, bright and clear.
Nose: Clean. It has developed a bit in the time I was trying the Amontillado Argueso, but I would say medium intensity. Caramel, toffee, walnuts, toast, dried apricots. A developed wine.
Palate: dry (but not as dry as Argueso), medium + acidity, no perceivable tannins, high alcohol, medium + body, medium intensity of flavours, with walnuts, toastiness and toffee lingering in the mouth. Medium + finish.

To conclude: good length, expressive, but at present less defined and complex that what I would have liked. Anyway a good wine.

  • NV Herederos de Argüeso Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Amontillado

Tasted preparing for the WSET exam
Appearance: bright and clear, deep amber.
Nose: clean, medium + intensity, it shows deliberate oxidation character of hazelnuts, with dried apricot, raisin and bread and toast aromas. Very savoury. There is also a hint of orange peel, but I would call it a developed wine
Palate: bone dry, medium + acidity, low but perceivable tannins, I would have said medium alcohol for a fortified wine, but at 19.5 it is probably high. Medium body, with a good (medium +) flavour intensity where the hazelnut character stands prominent, with toast and bread aromas. Medium + length, it leaves a bitter sensation in the back of the mouth.

To conclude: intense, long, expressive of the style (especially in the mouth, for its dryness), maybe a little unbalanced on the sharp side, but it's what I expect from an Amonitllado. Very good indeed.

  • 2009 Raka Shiraz Biography

Raspberry, sour cherry with white pepper and toasty aromas on the nose. Not overwhelming in the mouth, with above medium body and tannins and a firm acidity. I think this is a wonderfully balanced wine, it has some weight, leaving in the mouth a crushed berry mixed with light vanilla sensation, but not too much and it drinks incredibly well.
I had it with hamburger with a slightly sweet barbecue sauce and it paired perfectly.
