  • 1996 Château Lafite Rothschild

From Magnum bottle. First explosive animalic notes of horse saddle, barnyard and earth, lead pencil/graphite, but also tons of black currant/cassis, black cherries, sweet spices, dark chocolate, crushed flowers and later some sweet delicious note of marzipan. Shows more and more different flavors over the course of the evening. It's full-bodied and dense, without being heavy and has medium-high acidity and medium-high tannin that is super velvety. Long and complex finish. Once again, an absolute showstopper. A breath-takingly complex, deeply expressive but elegant and finessed Lafite... it just can't get any better than this...

  • 2002 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino

From Magnum bottle. Surprisingly approachable for Monfortino. Very complex but reticent aromatics of sweet red cherries, but also some dark berries, anise and other spices, tar, crushed rose petals and some herbal/hay kind of thing. Later also some espresso and leather notes emerge. Everything is super complex. It is full-bodied and dense without any heaviness, has teeth-stainingly high acidity and high tannin. Long and very complex finish. While this is still a baby in terms of evolution, I was surprised about the level of complexity and sheer class it is already showing. A super classic, massive but finessed and complex Monfortino of the very highest level... this is what classic traditional Barolo is all about.

  • 2004 Château Margaux

From Magnum bottle. Very expressive and interesting aromatics of barnyard, earth, blackberries, red berries, cinnamon, cloves, some flowers and some black currant too. It's medium+ bodied with medium-high acidity and medium+ tannin. Good length. What an excellent performance in this pretty difficult vintage. A very aromatic, classic, balanced and silky Margaux that maybe doesn't have the weight of the very best vintages but more than compensates with elegance, freshness and cool fruit.

2/14/2014 11:48:00 AM - Unfortunately no Vinitaly this year. I am between 2 jobs and have kind of a sabbatical so I will be all mostly in NYC and California before heading back to Europe middle of April (just too late for Vinitaly). Too bad....
