  • 2011 Shingleback Shiraz The Davey Estate

nose: intense, sexy and penetrating of black plum, mulberry, cedar, crushed leaf, licorice, nutmeg

palate: dense, ripe, textured, gorgeous. sweet blackberry and plum for miles. the super fruit would otherwise clobber you if it wasnt for the amazing balance. a bit bitter, vegetal, gamey. very spicy (cinnamon, star anise). long finish. utterly delicious

  • 2012 Columbia Crest H3 Les Chevaux

first columbia crest ive had in a long time that doesnt taste like flamed oak. it's there for sure, but gives the sensation of high-end rather than mass-appeal. the fruit is vibrant, the balance exemplary all across. nothing wows but nothing really lets you down either. add a lovely texture + finish and you have something rather beautiful.
    and it's cheap.

  • 2011 Cayuse Syrah En Chamberlin Vineyard

needed a very long decant indeed to blow off the broccoli/garbage can

nose: it smells great and terrible at the same time. i give up. ink for miles, old plastic, decaying plums, fruit rollups, smoked salmon

palate: here we are. much better. at some point in the night this wine 'clicked' and it wasnt disgusting and actually tasted like it came from grapes... before anything, there's palpable tension. a tossup between metallic fizz and then gobs of sweet dark fruit, maybe too sweet. the acidity is there but it comes in waves, then hides, and you're not sure it you're drinking motor oil or the nectar of the gods. pungent of olives and capers and cured meats. tannins are rubbery but not in a bad way as the overall darkness needs it. the finish is eternal (smoke and minerals and you see stars) and thankfully probably the only part of this wine that doesnt turn on you.
then you say 'what the hell did i just drink?' and take the next sip
